Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
The gu master collapsed into a pool of blood.
Sect Leader Rong sucked in a breath and snatched the porcelain vial into his hand.
Gu Yan’s strength drained from him and he collapsed onto the ground.
Gu Jiao dropped to one knee and caught him in her arms. “Ah Yan!”
Gu Yan’s trembling hands fumbled out a tiny porcelain bottle from his robes; his voice shook. “Good thing… I had the poison Lady Nan gave me… Sister, stay away from me… I still really want to kill you…”
Long Yi pulled the sword free from the gu master’s back and with one stroke severed his head.
Gu Yan’s vision went black, and he fainted in Gu Jiao’s arms.
With the gu master’s death, the curse of the gu dissolved. The reason Gu Yan collapsed was that in order to fight the gu poison, he had ingested the poison concocted by Lady Nan.
Gu Jiao held him tightly against her chest, pressing her cheek to his cold face, and whispered softly, “Foolish little brother.”
On the other hand, Sect Leader Rong, clutching the elixir, laughed madly. “I have the Elixir of Immortality now… I will not die… never again…”
Just then, with a thunderous rumble, the entire chamber shook violently once more. From the cracks in the ceiling and walls, sand trickled down in streams, and clouds of dust filled the air.
Xiao Heng looked around sharply. “It seems someone triggered the mechanisms beneath us… this place is about to collapse. We must get out!”
He grasped Gu Jiao’s hand.
Long Yi carried one man in each arm. With Gu Chengfeng in his left and Gu Yan in his right, he covered their retreat.
Just then, the stone door of the chamber dropped heavily.
Long Yi realized danger was at hand. He first hurled Gu Chengfeng and Gu Yan out, then used his palms to strike Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng, sending them through the doorway as well.
The stone door fell fast; when all was done, there was no time left for him to escape.
“Long Yi!” Gu Jiao cried.
Just as the chamber was about to be sealed shut, with a sharp ‘clack’, the little medicine chest appeared beneath the thousand-catty stone door, wedging it firmly in place.
Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng threw themselves to the ground, peering through the narrow gap.
“Long Yi! Hurry!” Xiao Heng called.
Long Yi rolled across the floor and slipped through the gap, escaping the chamber.
Sect Leader Rong had just swallowed the Elixir of Immortality. Like the first master of Hidden Night Island, he too could live forever now. But he could not waste his immortal life rotting in this place.
He crawled toward the gap under the stone door.
The little medicine chest did not move.
But when he was halfway through, the unexpected happened. The little medicine chest vanished, and the thousand-catty stone door slammed down!
“No——”
Under the crushing weight of the stone, Sect Leader Rong was torn in two.
His eyes opened wide, and he saw the little medicine chest right before him.
Coughing blood, he stretched out his hand. “The medicine… with the medicine… I can live… give me… the medicine…”
But until his very last breath, he never touched the medicine chest that had seemed so close.
……
Eighth month, in the golden season of autumn.
Gu Jiao and Long Yi were recuperating in the Princess Mansion.
Little Nine’s wings were wrapped in bandages, and he strutted proudly around the courtyard, showing off his wounds to the little birds he had just taken under his wing.
Gu Yan was already fine. He had gone off to school with Gu Xiaoshun.
Xiao Heng emerged from Long Yi’s room, carrying an empty bowl in his hand.
Gu Jiao looked at the bowl, let out a soft sound, and said, “He finished it all? So obedient.”
Xiao Heng smiled, then pulled out a box of charcoal pencils with his other hand. “I said you promised him this.”
Gu Jiao’s face darkened.
At the end of the eighth month, Xuanyuan Qi returned, and with him to the State of Zhao came Chang Kun and Ye Qing.
Gu Jiao originally thought Chang Kun had come to look for Chang Jing, but unexpectedly, that was not the case.
He came to see Long Yi.
Gu Jiao was in the courtyard, unhappily breaking charcoal pencils with Long Yi, when Chang Kun walked over. His emotions were stirred, and although he wanted to approach, he seemed afraid of startling Long Yi. So he just stood a short distance away, staring without blinking.
“He, he’s that child?” His eyes were already red.
Chang Jing looked blankly at his own father, confused.
Xiao Heng said, “If you mean the child abducted by the Sect Leader of Sword Lodge, yes.”
Long Yi had been stolen away at the age of five by the Sect Leader of Sword Lodge, who had the gu master erase his memories and raised him as nothing more than a tool for killing.
Xiao Heng glanced at Long Yi, who, with his crippled arm, was playing with Gu Jiao in utter abandon, then said to Chang Kun, “When Long Yi was taken, he was still very young. He only remembered that he came from Hidden Night Island and that his father was the Island Lord. Other than that, he knew nothing. But, I heard from Chang Jing that you did not have a son as old as Long Yi.”
Chang Kun gave a bitter smile. “The Island Lord he referred to is not me, but the first Island Lord. He was the child of the first Island Lord, though not one the Island Lord had by birth, but most likely a child he brought back from outside.”
“What do you mean most likely?” Xiao Heng asked.
Chang Kun said, “The first Island Lord was a strange and remarkable man, full of secrets that ordinary people could never understand. This child was one of those secrets. I always felt he was no ordinary child.”
Long Yi indeed was not an ordinary person.
Chang Kun sighed. “Before the first Island Lord’s death, he entrusted this child to me, telling me to take good care of him. I never thought the people from Sword Lodge would seize him, poison him with purple herb, and turn him into a death warrior. I have failed the first Island Lord.”
After the child disappeared, he had searched for him diligently, but could not find him, and in the end assumed he was no longer alive.
Xiao Heng asked, “Did your first Island Lord have a medicine chest?”
Chang Kun was surprised. “Yes. How do you know that?”
……
Once Gu Jiao had finished that day’s charcoal-pencil-breaking session, Chang Kun went to look for Long Yi, uncertain whether Long Yi would still remember him.
Meanwhile, Gu Jiao went with Xuanyuan Qi to the study.
Xuanyuan Qi handed Gu Jiao a brocade box. “I went first to Sword Lodge Island, where I discovered Long Yi’s connection to Hidden Night Island, and so I went there as well. Inside this is the Sword Lodge Sect Leader’s personal notes.”
Gu Jiao began with Sect Leader Rong’s notes. It turned out that when he was eight years old and had followed his father off the island, his senior brother was wounded, and it was only thanks to a divine physician that he survived. In the physician’s medicine chest were strange knives and medicines.
When he was twenty, he encountered the same divine physician again, whose appearance had not changed at all.
At thirty, it was the same.
He became convinced that the divine physician must have taken an elixir of immortality, and that it was hidden inside that medicine chest.
He followed the divine physician to Hidden Night Island, discovered that he was their Island Lord, and later found a portrait in the physician’s study.
“It is the portrait of the first Lord of the Shadows.” Xuanyuan Qi said, and as he spoke, he took out the portrait from his robes and held it out to Gu Jiao with both hands.
This was a gesture of the utmost respect; elders would not hand things to juniors in such a manner.
Gu Jiao, her mind elsewhere, paid no attention to this detail. But when she accepted the portrait, her expression froze instantly.
It was not a portrait.
It was a photograph.
A photograph from her previous life.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
