After finishing her offering to the Imperial Advisor in the purple bamboo grove, Gu Jiao first went to the operating room to check on Shangguan Yan’s condition.
Shangguan Yan had fallen asleep, and Xiao Heng said that she was feeling no discomfort at all, only a little hungry.
“When Mother wakes up, she can have some light porridge.” Gu Jiao said, then added, “I’ll go to the Duke Estate. I promised Jing Kong I would pick him up this evening.”
Little Jing Kong and Long Yi had accompanied Duke An back to the residence.
Xiao Heng lifted his hand to smooth the loose strands of hair by her temple and said softly, “I’ll come pick you up later.”
“All right.” Gu Jiao replied, then turned and walked out of the operating room.
“JiaoJiao.” Xiao Heng called after her in a low voice, “Are you doing okay?”
Gu Jiao didn’t tell Xiao Heng about the Imperial Advisor’s matter, but since she was able to guess it, it was naturally impossible for Xiao Heng to be completely unaware.
Her emotions were always subdued compared to others, yet once she cared about someone, even the smallest changes in her mood could never escape his eyes.
Gu Jiao paused by the doorway, then suddenly turned around, walked up to him, and pressed her forehead against his firm chest.
Every time she felt down, she would seek comfort in his embrace this way.
Xiao Heng gently wrapped an arm around her slender waist, while his other hand softly stroked her hair in reassurance.
In truth, even if Xiao Heng had not noticed, she would still have been able to manage her emotions by herself. But he always did notice, always in time to give her quiet comfort.
He never said things like “don’t be sad.”
After all, she was human too. She had every right to feel sad, to grieve, to not always be strong.
Shangguan Yan had been asleep all afternoon. When she finally opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was her son and daughter-in-law wrapped in each other’s arms, looking so affectionate and loving.
Her mouth opened slightly.
Very well, she was full already.
She was stuffed to the brim with all this dog food.
Xiao Heng held Gu Jiao close, soothing her gently again and again.
Gu Jiao’s forehead remained pressed against his warm and solid chest, and her pale hands absentmindedly toyed with his belt, a sure sign that her mood was already beginning to lift.
“Mother is awake.” She whispered.
Xiao Heng’s gaze flickered slightly, and his lashes trembled.
“I’m leaving.” Gu Jiao said with a mischievous curl of her lips before turning and walking out of the operating room, leaving Xiao Heng behind to face the awkwardness of being caught red-handed.
After leaving the Imperial Advisor’s Hall, Gu Jiao mounted Black Wind King’s back.
She had also ridden Black Wind King in the State of Zhao, but somehow, it felt different here.
The familiar streets, the familiar scent, and the bustling sounds of traffic and chatter. All of it stirred countless memories within her.
Tianxiang Academy, the polo matches, the selection of the Black Wind Cavalry commander. Each memory surfaced vividly before her eyes, as if it had all happened just yesterday.
Gu Jiao patted Black Wind King’s neck and said, “Big Boss, to the Duke Estate!”
Black Wind King galloped through the familiar streets with her on his back. Its presence was so commanding that other horses were easily startled, so it took care to avoid the crowds, choosing to run through the empty side alleys instead.
Halfway their journey, a broken roof tile suddenly flew toward them from ahead, almost striking Gu Jiao. Black Wind King turned sharply to the right, dodging it with quick reflexes.
Immediately afterward, more tiles and even concealed weapons came flying one after another.
Someone was fighting.
“Where do you think you can run? Today it’s either you die, or I do!”
Gu Jiao frowned. That voice——
“Big Boss!”
She tightened her grip on the reins, her gaze turning sharp and focused.
Black Wind King, who had long shared her instincts forged on the battlefield, instantly understood. It quickened its pace and charged forward like lightning.
They reached a narrow, dilapidated alley, where the wall at the end had already collapsed by a third but was still taller than a person.
Gu Jiao pressed her knees against the horse’s flanks and lifted slightly off the saddle. Black Wind King leaped powerfully, soaring over the wall in one clean motion.
Gu Jiao hadn’t brought her red-tasseled spear this time, but she carried other weapons on her.
She unfastened the whip coiled around her waist, flicked her wrist, and with a sharp crack, lashed it toward the two people locked in combat.
The man in black had the upper hand; his sword was about to pierce the veiled woman who had fallen to the ground. In that split second, before the blade could strike, his wrist was suddenly gripped by an immense force.
Startled, he turned his head——
Black Wind King reared up, raising its front hooves high before bringing them crashing down toward the man with tremendous strength!
The man tried to drag the whip’s owner down from her horse, but clearly his strength was lacking to do it and he had no choice but to twist aside to evade.
It looked as though he had narrowly escaped, yet Gu Jiao suddenly flicked her arm in reverse, jerking the whip back with a powerful pull that lifted him clean off the ground and slammed him hard into the thick stone wall nearby!
“Ah——”
Pain exploded across his chest and back simultaneously. He screamed, crashed to the ground, and spat out a mouthful of blood.
Gu Jiao swung down from her horse just as he was trying to get up. Without hesitation, she planted her foot squarely on his chest, pinning him back to the ground with merciless force.
The man in black felt as though every bone in his body had shattered; his head struck the ground with a heavy thud, and it felt as if his very brain had been jarred loose.
Ignoring his agony, Gu Jiao turned her gaze toward the woman beside them. “Lady Nan, are you all right?”
Indeed, the person being chased by the man in black was none other than Lady Nan, whom she had not seen for a long time.
Hearing Gu Jiao’s voice, Lady Nan froze, and when she looked at her face, she hesitated for quite a while before daring to believe her eyes.
“It’s me, Lady Nan.” Gu Jiao said.
Lady Nan’s eyes widened almost to the point of popping out. “JiaoJiao? Your face…”
“Oh, the birthmark is gone.” Gu Jiao replied casually. Then she glanced down at the man under her foot and asked, “Lady Nan, who is he?”
Lady Nan steadied herself against the wall, brushed the dust off her clothes, and came over to stand beside Gu Jiao. “Someone from the Tang Sect.”
With that, she flicked her finger, sending a poisoned needle flying into his throat, sealing his life in an instant.
Gu Jiao withdrew her foot from his chest and asked, “Lady Nan, what exactly is going on? Earlier, when you said you stayed behind in Shengdu to take care of some private matters, was it related to the Tang Sect?”
Lady Nan sighed helplessly. “It’s a long story.”
Gu Jiao glanced around the alley. “Where’s Master Lu?”
“He went after another disciple of the Tang Sect.” Lady Nan answered. “We agreed to meet later at Li’s Teahouse.”
Gu Jiao knew that place. She had taken Little Jing Kong there once for some snacks. It was on Biluo Street, just three miles away.
“I’ll go with you to wait for Master Lu.” Gu Jiao said.
“Will that delay you?” Lady Nan asked.
“It won’t.” Gu Jiao shook her head.
Some matters were more urgent than others, and she believed Little Jing Kong would not be angry about her being late.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
