Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Gu Jiao and Lady Nan shared Black Wind King and rode together to Li’s Teahouse, where they requested a private room on the second floor facing the street.

Gu Jiao pushed open the window, and the two of them sat by it.

The view from there was excellent, they could see the entire street clearly. If Master Lu came anywhere near, they would spot him right away.

Gu Jiao poured a cup of tea for Lady Nan.

“By the way, JiaoJiao, what brings you to the State of Yan again? And your birthmark, how did it disappear? I also heard that you and Ah Heng got married. It’s such a pity I couldn’t attend your wedding. I’m truly sorry.”

There were so many things she wanted to say. She cared deeply not only about Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng’s situation but also about Gu Xiaoshun, Gu Yan, and the others she missed dearly.

“It actually wasn’t a birthmark. It was a gecko cinnabar mark.” Gu Jiao briefly recounted the drunken blunder involving the abbot of the temple.

After listening, Lady Nan was left speechless.

Gu Jiao then went on to tell her about the others’ current circumstances. Gu Yan and Gu Xiaoshun were both studying at Qinghe Academy. Gu Chengfeng was serving in the military as a Commandant and had not returned to the academy, choosing instead to devote himself to a martial career.

Gu Changqing had inherited command of the Gu Family Army and had married Yuan Baolin.

In the seventh month of last year, Xiao Heng passed the examination and became a Junior Secretary. At the end of the year, Grand Secretary Yuan’s health began to decline, and he submitted his resignation. This second month, Xiao Heng succeeded him as the new Chief Grand Secretary.

Both Grandaunt and Granduncle were in excellent health, and Granduncle had even been reinstated to his former official post. He frequently visited the imperial palace.

Gu Xiaobao was now two and a half years old, a clever little boy, though rather lazy.

Yao shi was also doing well.

“Ah Heng and Jing Kong are here too. Ah Heng is at the Imperial Advisor’s Hall, and Jing Kong is at Duke An’s residence.”

Gu Jiao spoke calmly and with patience, detailing everything carefully.

Hearing that everyone was safe and well, Lady Nan felt deeply comforted. “That’s wonderful, truly wonderful!”

“But Lady Nan, what exactly happened with you two?”

“Ah.” Lady Nan lifted a hand to touch her face through the veil and sighed softly. “It all began as an old grudge. When I left the Tang Sect, they abolished my martial arts and claimed that from then on, there would be no more ties between us. I foolishly believed their word, thinking they would let me go and never trouble me again. Later, I went to the State of Zhao and met your Master Lu.”

At this point, she paused briefly, then smiled faintly. “You might have already guessed it. Your Master Lu is none other than the renowned Master Lu of the State of Zhao. He once received great kindness from Elder Feng. When Ah Heng later came to him, asking that he take Xiaoshun and Ah Yan as his disciples, he agreed without hesitation.”

Gu Jiao had indeed long suspected Master Lu’s true identity, so she was not particularly surprised to hear Lady Nan confirm it.

Lady Nan went on, her tone steeped in reminiscence. “When I first met your Master Lu, I hadn’t yet been disfigured. Unfortunately, during a boat trip one day, I caught the attention of the Emperor of the State of Zhao. I still don’t know what the Emperor was thinking, he clearly knew that I was already married, yet he still invited both me and your Master Lu to enter the palace. He hosted a banquet for us in the imperial garden. Everyone drank quite a bit that day. I went to a nearby pavilion to clear my head, not realizing that I would accidentally offend Empress Xiao there.”

“What happened afterward?” Gu Jiao asked.

Lady Nan raised her teacup, a bitter smile touching her lips. “After that incident, we left the palace early. But on our way back, we were ambushed. That was when my face was destroyed. The assassin escaped without a trace, and I have never managed to find him all these years.”

Gu Jiao touched her chin thoughtfully. “Ordinary people would probably assume it was Empress Xiao’s doing.”

Lady Nan nodded. “That’s right. At first, your Master Lu and I suspected her too. But even if we did, what could we do about it? She was the Empress of the State of Zhao, the biological sister of Marquis Xuanping. We were powerless; we couldn’t touch her even if we wanted to.”

“Your Master Lu hated Empress Xiao. But he hated even more the one who started it all, the Emperor of the State of Zhao. If not for his lustful greed that led him to invite us into the palace, I would never have offended Empress Xiao. Since then, your Master Lu refused to serve the court again and has lived under an assumed name ever since.”

Her expression darkened as she said, “Then, just last year, not long after you all went on campaign, I encountered once more the very same assassin who disfigured me back then!”

“Are they people from the Tang Sect?” Gu Jiao combined everything that had happened today and came to this conclusion.

A faint cold glint flashed across Lady Nan’s eyes as she replied, “That’s right, they’re from the Tang Sect! I forced quite a bit of information out of that person and learned that the Tang Sect has always held a grudge over my departure. Just like Qi Xuan, they believe that I secretly comprehended some extraordinary martial technique, which allowed me to master our sect’s highest martial arts. They’ve always wanted to capture me and drag me back.”

Gu Jiao did not ask why Lady Nan had not mentioned this earlier, for she understood her temperament well. She simply did not want to trouble others.

Looking at Lady Nan, Gu Jiao spoke solemnly, “Lady Nan, leave the Tang Sect to me.”

Lady Nan looked at her in astonishment. “What do you plan to do?”

Gu Jiao’s voice was calm as she said, “Flatten the Tang Sect.”

The sects of the martial world and the imperial court had always kept to their own spheres, rarely interfering with each other. Even someone like Qi Xuan had left the Tang Sect before he threw his lot in with the Han Family.

Gu Jiao had no intention of making trouble for the martial world, but since the Tang Sect had overstepped their bounds and bullied Lady Nan, they could not blame her when the Black Wind Cavalry came trampling down their mountain stronghold.

“JiaoJiao…” Lady Nan murmured, unwilling to let Gu Jiao involve herself for her sake.

Gu Jiao met her gaze and said quietly, “Lady Nan, years ago, the Gu Family took twenty taels from me and in return severed their ties with Gu Xiaoshun. His parents personally accepted two silver ingots, and they were quite pleased. They thought selling off a useless son for twenty taels was a great bargain.”

Lady Nan was utterly shocked. She had never imagined that behind Gu Xiaoshun’s estrangement from the Gu Family lay such a humiliating truth.

“You and Master Lu treat Xiaoshun like your own son. I don’t want Xiaoshun to lose the parents who truly care for him.”

Lady Nan fell silent.

Gu Jiao went on, “Besides, when Ah Yan was injured, didn’t you both rush to the State of Yan without hesitation?”

The kindness that Lady Nan and Master Lu had shown toward her two younger brothers could not be measured or repaid in a few words.

Gu Jiao would never allow anyone to harm Lady Nan.

The two sat together a while longer before Master Lu came hurrying over.

Lady Nan waved to him from the second floor. He looked up, and though he immediately recognized his own wife, he could not tell who the young woman sitting opposite her was.

He went upstairs to the private room.

“You’re not hurt, are you?” Lady Nan asked.

“I’m fine. What about you?” Master Lu replied.

“I’m fine as well. Come and see who’s here.” Lady Nan said with a smile, glancing at Gu Jiao. “You definitely won’t recognize her.”

Master Lu’s eyes fell upon Gu Jiao’s flawless face. He stared for quite some time before stammering, “You, you wouldn’t happen to be JiaoJiao, would you?”

“Master Lu.” Gu Jiao greeted him with a smile.

Master Lu stumbled backward and bumped into the wall beside him.

It really was JiaoJiao?

Had she changed her face?

No, upon closer inspection, her features were not much different from before, but now that the birthmark was gone, it was as if she had been completely reborn.

“JiaoJiao’s face has healed,” Lady Nan said, choosing not to mention the gecko cinnabar blunder.

Master Lu simply assumed that Gu Jiao’s exceptional medical skill had allowed her to cure herself, and the thought brought him great comfort.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
