Gu Jiao stayed on Hidden Night Island for seven days.
She told Chang Kun about her origins. Although Chang Kun had somewhat expected it, hearing the truth directly from her lips still left him utterly shocked.
Gu Jiao also mentioned the identity of the Lord of Shadows. After asking which year that person had arrived and which year they had left, Chang Kun could not help but feel deep regret.
Chang Kun sighed and said, “You two… almost met each other…”
“What?” Gu Jiao turned her head toward him in surprise, her hair fluttering in the cold wind rushing in from the sea as the roaring waves crashed endlessly against the shore.
Gazing out at the vast, boundless ocean, Chang Kun let out a long sigh. “There were some things I couldn’t understand before, but after listening to what you said, I think I finally understand what the Island Lord meant by those words back then.”
Back in the organization, Gu Jiao had violated a rule that could never be forgiven. The organization issued a hunt-and-kill order against her. To save her, the Godfather deliberately arranged a mission during which she obtained the little medicine chest.
“Godfather, this box is so pretty. Here you go.”
“I’m not interested.”
His cold voice echoed through the empty building as he stepped over the corpse that had not yet gone cold, his long, straight legs moving steadily, and left without looking back.
Afterward, that little medicine chest brought Gu Jiao through time and space to this world.
The little medicine chest exhausted all its energy in the process and took ten years to recover. When it finally regained its power, the very first thing it did was bring the Godfather over as well.
However, the medicine chest’s energy was insufficient, and an error occurred in the temporal dimension; thus, it sent him back ten years earlier than Gu Jiao’s arrival.
At that time, Chang Kun was still a child living in a small fishing village by the sea. He was the one who saw the unconscious young man lying on the shore.
The man’s clothes were strange and unfamiliar, but his face was handsome and calm, not like someone of evil intent. Chang Kun hurried home to fetch his father.
His father rescued the man and took him in, and that one act of kindness turned into several months of shelter.
Later, a tsunami submerged their village. The man led the surviving villagers to an isolated island, which later became Hidden Night Island.
“Two years.” Chang Kun said. “One morning, I went to deliver his breakfast, and he was gone. My father and I searched the entire island, but we couldn’t find him anywhere. Ten years later, he came back again. By then, I was already grown. He took me with him to establish the Hidden Night Sect. He told me he was going to sail out to find someone, hoping that this time he could meet her. You can probably guess the rest. He returned empty-handed.”
“When he came here for the third time, he no longer spoke of finding anyone. Instead, he began cultivating purple herbs.”
At that time, her plane had already crashed, leaving no remains behind. She could no longer return through physical transmigration. For soul transmigration, a crucial medium was needed, purple herb.
Gu Jiao quietly sorted through everything in her mind.
She had made a mistake in the organization, which led them to erase her key memories and initiate the hunt against her.
She then crossed into another world and became the first Lord of the Shadows. Later, she returned to the modern world, but due to the interference of the temporal magnetic field, she lost all memories related to her crossing.
She continued working in the organization as if nothing had happened, while they pretended not to know anything either. Yet behind the scenes, they had already begun their second hunt against her, the plane crash operation.
But what mistake had she made? What were those crucial memories the organization had erased from her mind?
……
“Sir, do you take the lady beside you as your wife, to stay with her forever, whether she becomes rich or poor, healthy or sick?”
“Yes, I do.”
“Miss, do you take the gentleman beside you as your husband, to stay with him forever, whether he becomes rich or poor, healthy or sick?”
“Hmm?”
The bride stared blankly at the man.
The man raised his slender, jade-like hand and gently brushed her cheek, gazing deeply into her eyes. “Do you?”
“I…”
Bang!
A gunshot rang out.
Gu Jiao jolted awake, instantly alert, and sat up straight in bed. She reached under her pillow for her gun out of instinct.
Her hand found nothing. Only then did she realize she was no longer in her previous life; it had merely been a dream.
But the events in that dream had truly happened. They had once received a mission: someone planned to assassinate the heiress of a wealthy conglomerate during the so-called “wedding of the century.” Gu Jiao had disguised herself as the bride to lure the assassin into the open.
Originally, the groom was the real one. But somehow, at the last moment, he had been replaced by the Godfather.
It was, in a way, fortunate that the groom had been switched. The enemy’s movements were too fast; the snipers hidden around the area didn’t even have time to take a shot before the man fired directly at Gu Jiao.
The Godfather stepped in front of her and took the bullet in her place.
If the real groom had been the one standing before Gu Jiao at that moment, she would have already died under that gunfire.
“Hmm? Where’s Ah Heng?”
Gu Jiao looked around, realizing that Xiao Heng was nowhere to be seen.
She put on her shoes, stepped down from the bed, and walked past the folding screen, only to see Xiao Heng sitting cross-legged on a blanket in front of the brazier, his face dark, snorting softly through his nose in silent irritation.
And who could he be mad at? Of course, at that so-called Godfather!
His wife was thinking about another man every single day, he could practically die of jealousy!
“What are you thinking about?” Gu Jiao tilted her head and asked.
With deadly seriousness, Xiao Heng asked, “If the Godfather and I both fell into the water, who would you save first?”
Gu Jiao: “???”
……
By the tenth month, the weather across the ice fields grew increasingly harsh and unsuitable for travel, so they had to cross before the end of the ninth month.
Gu Jiao went to bid farewell to Chang Kun.
Chang Kun had hoped that Gu Jiao and Long Yi could stay on the island a bit longer, but he understood that Gu Jiao had twin children waiting at home, so it was indeed time for her to return.
“I actually think Hidden Night Island is wonderful. I almost don’t want to leave.” Feng Wuxiu said with a hint of regret.
Taoist Qingfeng gave his younger brother a cool glance. “You mean you don’t want to leave the island’s food, right?”
Feng Wuxiu pursed his lips and said nothing.
“Farewell.” Xiao Heng said, cupping his hands toward Chang Kun.
At last, they were leaving this troublesome place!
He no longer had to suffer silently, burning with jealousy every time over another man!
Chang Kun smiled and returned the salute. “Take care, everyone.”
Liao Chen and Taoist Qingfeng nodded slightly in return.
Feng Wuxiu also gave a polite bow. “Uncle Chang, if you ever come to the State of Yan, I’ll treat you to something delicious!”
Chang Kun laughed heartily. “Good, good. It’s a promise then!”
Father and son watched as the group boarded their sleigh, racing swiftly across the snow under the lead of the icefield wolves, until they vanished from sight.
Chang Jing lowered his eyes silently, looking rather dejected.
Chang Kun suddenly tossed a bundle at him.
Chang Jing froze and looked at him in confusion.
Chang Kun snorted coldly. “Go on, get moving!”
A grown son couldn’t be kept at home forever!

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
