By the end of the ninth month, the six of them finally returned to Pucheng.

Gu Jiao reunited with the Black Wind King. It was the longest they had ever been apart since they first fought side by side. The Black Wind King rubbed its head gently against her, as if silently expressing how much it had missed her.

By the tenth month, snow had begun to fall along the border.

Braving the bitter wind and snow, they returned to Shengdu. The dragon-and-phoenix twins could now sit and crawl, having grown into two adorably chubby little babies.

Jing Kong had also grown taller. He was training in marksmanship under Xuanyuan Qi’s guidance. When Gu Jiao first saw the small yet spirited figure practicing with a weapon in the courtyard, for a brief moment she almost didn’t recognize him.

“JiaoJiao!”

He spotted Gu Jiao, spun his hand backward with fluid grace, and drove his small red-tasseled spear heavily into the ground!

Then he leapt forward energetically, dashing toward her with youthful vigor.

When the youth was strong, the nation would be strong.

In him, she saw the future of the Xuanyuan Family, and also the future of the State of Yan.

……

On New Year’s Eve, Princess Xinyang was woken up early by Little Yiyi.

“Mother, I can’t sleep anymore! I want to get up!”

Little Yiyi was now two years old. She spoke clearly and fluently, full of boundless energy, and insisted on going out to play every day before dawn.

But today, she wasn’t getting up to play. After dressing neatly and putting on her pretty pink rabbit-fur hat, Little Yiyi huffed and puffed her way to the doorway, standing there expectantly as she peered out through the entrance.

“What are you looking at, Yiyi?”

Yu Jin asked her with a smile.

“Brother and sister-in-law.” Little Yiyi said in her soft, milky voice.

Xiao Heng had sent a letter saying they would make it back in time for New Year’s Eve dinner. However, there had been several days of heavy snowfall along the official road outside the western city gate, so no one knew whether they could really make it back.

Little Yiyi refused to go anywhere else. She simply sat down on the threshold, resting her chubby cheeks in her palms, turning herself into a “Waiting-for-Brother” tiny little statue.

Heaven rewards those who were patient. Near noon, Xiao Heng and Gu Jiao’s carriage finally arrived.

The first one to hop down was Little Jing Kong.

“Big Brother Jing Kong!”

Little Yiyi greeted him sweetly, tilting her head up to look at him, her eyes widening in astonishment as she saw how much taller he had grown. She exclaimed, “Wow!”

“Yiyi.” Little Jing Kong ruffled her little head like an older child would. Now at eight years old, the boy carried himself with a touch of grace and youthful charm.

Soon after, Xiao Heng and Gu Jiao stepped down from the carriage, each holding one of the dragon-and-phoenix twins in their arms.

“Elder brother! Sister-in-law!” Little Yiyi ran forward again to greet them, her curious gaze immediately turning to the two little ones in their arms. “Who are they?”

Among everyone in the group, the ones who had changed the most were undoubtedly the dragon-and-phoenix twins.

When they had left, the twins had been only two months old. Now, at ten months, they had grown taller and chubbier, their facial features had opened up beautifully, and they no longer lay swaddled in their blankets as before. Dressed neatly in tiny outfits with tiger-head hats on their heads, they had become lively, bright-eyed babies.

Xiao Heng pinched Yiyi’s chubby cheek, laughing. “Don’t you remember your little niece and nephew?”

Little Yiyi widened her eyes. “Ah.”

……

In the eastern region of the State of Zhao, bandits were running rampant, and General Weiyuan had been wounded. Shortly after Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng left the State of Zhao, Xiao Ji received an imperial order to lead troops eastward to suppress the rebellion.

On New Year’s Eve, he was still on the battlefield.

The New Year’s dinner was held at Renshou Palace.

The Emperor and Empress were present, along with Imperial Consort Zhuang, all the princes, and the imperial grandchildren.

Gu Jiao saw Rui Wangfei and Huangfu Xian again after a long separation.

Rui Wangfei’s little princess was about the same age as Gu Xiaobao, just over three years old, a shy and adorable little girl.

Rui Wangfei was pregnant again, and since Du Xiaoyun had already given birth to the Crown Prince’s eldest son, Empress Xiao didn’t mind whether Rui Wangfei’s child would be a boy or a girl.

Little Jing Kong and Qin Chuyu were lighting firecrackers in the courtyard, scaring several of the younger children into squealing cries.

Huangfu Xian had completely adapted to his prosthetic limb and now walked as naturally as any ordinary person.

He had undergone another bone adjustment surgery at Miraculous Hands Hall, personally performed by Physician Song. With the anesthetic Gu Jiao had left behind, the pain was kept within tolerable limits.

The Rui Wang couple were kindhearted people who took meticulous care of him, and his temperament had become much brighter and more open than when he had first arrived.

Gu Jiao even caught sight of him teasing Little Jing Kong and Qin Chuyu with a fake firecracker, only Qin Chuyu fell for the trick, and Huangfu Xian laughed so hard he nearly doubled over.

Rui Wangfei said with a smile, “It’s been a long time since the imperial palace was this lively.”

Gu Jiao looked at her Grandaunt, who was playing leaf cards with Empress Xiao, Imperial Consort Zhuang, and Princess Xinyang, and curved her lips slightly. She said softly, “From now on, it will always be lively.”

“Hu!” Grandaunt declared triumphantly, slapping her cards down on the table.

Empress Xiao nearly burst into tears. “How did I lose again?”

……

Late that night, the group finally began to leave Renshou Palace one after another.

The children had already fallen fast asleep.

Xiao Heng carried Little Jing Kong down from the carriage. “You’ve grown up, you’re really heavy now.”

It wasn’t until they entered the courtyard and Xiao Heng laid him gently onto the soft bed that the cunning little monk mumbled, “I’m not heavy, you’re just weak!”

Xiao Heng’s face darkened. “You were pretending to sleep!”

……

In the main courtyard of Princess Xinyang’s residence, Yu Jin gently tucked the sleeping Yiyi under the thick cotton quilt before turning to Princess Xinyang and saying softly, “Your Highness, you should rest early as well.”

Princess Xinyang stood by the window, quietly gazing into the vast, endless night.

“Your Highness?” Yu Jin stepped up beside her and gave her a careful look. “What’s wrong? Are you thinking about Lord Marquis?”

In the past, if Yu Jin had asked such a question, Princess Xinyang would have immediately replied without hesitation, saying something like, “How could I possibly be thinking about him?”

But this time, she didn’t say a word.

Yu Jin poured her a cup of hot tea and draped the cloak she had just removed back over her shoulders. “The wind is strong.”

Princess Xinyang accepted the cup and held it in her hands, then spoke in a low voice. “Yu Jin.”

“Yes, Your Highness?” Yu Jin looked at her, waiting for her to continue.

“…Never mind, it’s nothing.” Princess Xinyang changed her mind and fell silent.

Yu Jin had served her for many years and could easily read the princess’s heart.

“Your Highness, are you perhaps worried about Lord Marquis?”

After all, Lord Marquis was such a remarkable man; there were few women who wouldn’t be moved by someone like him.

In the past, the princess had not been swayed because she had been unwell. Ever since Lord Marquis had killed the former Liang Wang, her condition had improved greatly. And after everything Lord Marquis had done for her, perhaps certain feelings had quietly begun to take root in her heart.

But the princess didn’t know how to love someone.

She had always thought that her tolerance toward Lord Marquis stemmed only from the fact that he was her child’s father, and that allowing him to come and go freely from her residence was merely for the sake of appeasing Little Yiyi when she cried.

Yu Jin looked at her steadily. “Your Highness, go find Lord Marquis.”

“What?” Princess Xinyang was startled.

Yu Jin sighed. “Don’t you want to understand your own heart?”

Princess Xinyang opened her mouth slightly. “I…”

Yu Jin smiled gently. “Go see Lord Marquis. The moment you lay eyes on him, you’ll know the answer in your heart.”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
