After Xiao Ming swallowed the antidote, he finally regained consciousness on a night when the moon was completely obscured and the wind howled fiercely.

However, what left him utterly bewildered was the fact that the vast military camp was unexpectedly empty and deserted, with not a single person in sight anywhere.

…It was simply absurd.

Could it be that the Dongyi people had already taken control of the border defense and slaughtered all the soldiers stationed in the camp?

Surely the entire army could not have marched out together in full force.

There had never been such a precedent throughout all of history.

Just as he was turning these impossible questions over and over in his mind, a sturdy figure suddenly darted into his tent, lifted him together with the blanket, and carried him off, sprinting away with such speed that his feet barely touched the ground, vanishing from the camp with swift, whistling steps.

It was Long Yi.

They had only remembered after going quite a long distance that they had forgotten Xiao Ming, who had been poisoned, back in the military camp.

So he had come back to bring Xiao Ming away.

Long Mengmeng was not a naughty Dragon Shadow Guard who eavesdropped on people, since he had stuffed cotton in his ears!

……

For three whole days, the soldiers of the military camp had been forced to wander outside before they were finally permitted to return, and during those three days, since they could neither go back to camp nor truly loiter aimlessly, they decided to go and raid the Dongyi Tribe.

Chang Jing was locked in fierce battle with the troops of the Dongyi’s eldest prince, when suddenly an overwhelming torrent of armored soldiers surged in with unstoppable force.

Just as Chang Jing raised his long sword to thrust it toward the Dongyi’s second prince, someone struck the weapon out of his hand.

When he turned around, he discovered it was his own people.

He could not afford to lose his temper.

Chang Jing’s expression instantly darkened.

Xiao Ming’s poison had been cured, and Xiao En and Xiao Ze had also successfully escaped from danger, so the Dongyi people no longer held any leverage against the State of Zhao.

The soldiers, who had been suppressing their frustration for days and who had all been roused from sleep and driven out of the camp in the middle of the night, released all their pent-up anger upon the Dongyi troops in one sweeping outburst.

The Dongyi troops were beaten miserably, scattering like falling blossoms, and before long, they surrendered.

The Dongyi people looked at the State of Zhao army, which showed absolutely no intention of “returning in triumph,” and could not help thinking that since they had already surrendered and even signed all the exploitative treaties that needed to be signed, why in the world were these troops still not leaving.

The State of Zhao soldiers also felt bitter inside, but they did not say a word.

……

Xiao Ji was injured, and although he had taken the medicine from the Holy Maiden Hall and his recovery was indeed progressing remarkably well, certain kinds of excessive exertion still had their consequences.

There was no need to describe in detail how badly his wounds had split open; on top of that, he had even caught a cold.

Princess Xinyang was not doing much better, since it was she who had passed the chill to Xiao Ji in the first place.

“Achoo!”

Inside Xiao Ming’s tent, Xiao Ji sneezed heavily.

Xiao Ming looked at his elder brother with an expression that was difficult to put into words and said, “Elder brother, no offense, but you’re not some inexperienced lad who has never known women, so how can you be so lacking in restraint? Look at you, injured here, sick there. Anyone who doesn’t know better would think something terrible had happened to you.”

Xiao Ji’s nose was stuffed, and his voice carried a thick nasal tone as he proudly replied, “The joy of a new marriage is something you would not understand.”

Xiao Ming: Twenty-some years of newlywed life, sure, very funny.

“Achoo!”

“Achoo!”

“Achoo!”

In another tent, Princess Xinyang was wrapped tightly in her blanket, sitting on the bed while sneezing nonstop.

Yu Jin felt so distressed for her that she hurried over with a bowl of ginger soup from the table and held it out, saying, “Quickly, drink this while it’s still hot and sweat it out.”

Princess Xinyang lifted her hand, intending to take the ginger soup, but then discovered that she no longer had the strength to even raise her arm.

Yu Jin pressed a hand to her forehead, utterly exasperated.

What on earth was all this?

She shook her head, picked up the spoon, and began feeding her princess one spoonful at a time.

As she fed her, she complained softly and resentfully, “Lord Marquis is really something. He clearly knows that Your Highness has seldom… had such affairs with men, so he should at least know how to show some restraint.”

Princess Xinyang lowered her eyes while drinking the soup and responded with a muffled hum.

She felt somewhat guilty.

After all, he wasn’t the only one who lacked restraint.

……

A great victory was won at the border.

Xiao Ji released the Dongyi King and allowed him to return, but because his own body could not withstand such strain, he soon fell gravely ill, and before he even had time to draft an imperial decree naming his successor, he passed away and ascended to the heavens.

Afterward, the Dongyi Tribe, having dealt with external threats, descended into internal strife.

Several princes fought bitterly, their faces flushed with anger, yet in the end, the outcome of who would ascend to the throne surprised everyone.

The new ruler turned out to be none other than the Dongyi’s Holy Maiden.

And her imperial consort was the son of a high-ranking noble from the State of Zhao.

“What a clever scheme, Qin Fengwen.” In the carriage on their journey back to the capital, Xiao Ji crossed his arms and looked at Princess Xinyang with a leisurely, amused expression.

Who said women were inferior to men?

Qin Fengwen merely had no interest in state affairs; otherwise, she could have easily become a Princess Regent.

That day, everyone assumed that Qin Fengwen had secretly drugged the Holy Maiden, but in reality, that was not the case.

Qin Fengwen had explicitly given the Holy Maiden two choices: one, to take the drug and be forced into submission; or two, to negotiate a deal in which both sides would take what they needed.

When the Holy Maiden heard that Qin Fengwen was using the throne of the Dongyi King as a bargaining chip to secure the chance to marry Xiao Ji, she thought Qin Fengwen had lost her mind.

But Qin Fengwen was not insane.

She simply believed that this man was worth such a price.

The condition she proposed was based on careful consideration from multiple angles.

The Holy Maiden was ambitious and capable, and no matter which prince eventually ascended the throne, she would be able to rebel with ease.

Rather than letting events unfold chaotically, it was far better to go with the flow, support the Holy Maiden in ascending the throne, and add one additional condition: the Holy Maiden must marry someone from the State of Zhao.

As for the choice of the person, that was left to her, Qing Fengwen, to decide.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
