After Xiao Ming awoke, he acknowledged his daughter, and from that moment on, the Dongyi princess ceased to exist, while only the Xiao Family’s young miss, Xiao Zhen’er, remained.
The name Xiao Zhen was to be entered into the ancestral records, and she traveled back to the capital together with Xiao Ji and Qin Fengwen.
On the day before their departure, a small incident took place.
Xiao Ming grabbed his long sword and chased Long Yi around the military camp for more than ten full laps.
“You, you, you, stop right there!”
He could not beat him, nor could he catch him. While Long Yi was not even flushed nor short of breath, Xiao Ming was already close to fainting from exhaustion.
The entire matter had begun when Long Yi and Xiao Zhen’er went to the Holy Maiden Hall to find Xiao Ji and Qin Fengwen.
Xiao Ji had been drugged, and the effects of the drug also implicated Long Yi. In order to prevent the effects from worsening, Qin Fengwen instructed Zhen’er to take Long Yi to stay in another room for a few nights.
Who could have expected that after searching the entirety of the Holy Maiden Hall, the only room that was both close enough to the inner hall and guaranteed to have no one passing by was just one single room?
Zhen’er repeatedly opened her mouth to speak but swallowed her words each time. Seeing how affectionate her uncle and aunt were, she could not bring herself to separate them, so she and Long Yi stayed in the room together.
But she swore to the heavens that nothing had happened between her and the big guy!
Long Yi never slept easily in unfamiliar places, so he had stayed perched on the beam the entire night, keeping constant watch over the movements within the Holy Maiden Hall.
Long Yi had a simple mind and had not thought about anything inappropriate, and Zhen’er did not consider it worth mentioning. She thought it best for this matter to remain buried in the stomachs of the two of them forever.
Who could have known that after she drank a few extra mouthfuls of wine that night, she would slip up and let the truth spill out, allowing her father to overhear it.
Xiao Ming firmly believed that Long Yi had disgraced his daughter’s reputation and wanted to chop that scoundrel into pieces.
Long Yi ran as he turned his head to make mocking gestures, nearly driving Xiao Ming to his grave from sheer fury.
After Xiao En and Xiao Ze recovered, they went to pay their respects to Qin Fengwen.
“Your Highness.” The two cupped their hands in greeting.
In their memory, Princess Xinyang did not acknowledge their father, and naturally did not acknowledge their father’s children either.
Qin Fengwen did not force them to change the way they addressed her, but she made them each a set of clothing.
It was the first time in their entire lives that they had ever received a gift from her, and both of them were stunned.
Qin Fengwen spoke gently. “You two have grown up, and by all rights, you should be thinking about marriage. Do either of you have a young lady you fancy? If you do, I shall personally go and propose on your behalf.”
The two brothers stared at her in disbelief.
Qin Fengwen continued, “If you do not, then I will choose one or two candidates for you. Naturally, only if you approve will I proceed with presenting the betrothal gifts.”
Did this mean that the Princess… had finally accepted them?
Qin Fengwen looked at them and said, “I heard from your second uncle that the two of you should be able to return to the capital by the end of this year, and that is perfect timing, since Qing’er and Yiyi have yet to meet their two elder brothers.”
A lump of emotion rose in the throats of the two brothers, and holding tightly onto the clothing she had personally sewn for them, they bowed to her with deep gratitude.
……
At the end of the fourth month, the carriage carrying Xiao Ji and Qin Fengwen finally arrived in the capital.
“Take the most crowded street.”
“Open all the windows.”
“Lift the curtains as well.”
Xiao Ji issued his commands boldly and without hesitation.
Driving the carriage, Chang Jing could not help asking in confusion, “Why are we doing all this?”
Xiao Ji brushed off his wide sleeves and said with infuriating smugness, “This Marquis is so handsome, so let the common people look a little more.”
Chang Jing: “…”
What Xiao Ji wanted the common people to see was not his face, but the affection between him and Qin Fengwen.
Did not the whole world say that he and Qin Fengwen had a troubled and unhappy marriage?
Then he would let them all open their eyes wide and see for themselves.
“Circle around again.” he ordered Chang Jing.
Chang Jing felt powerless to complain. “We have already circled the entire city three times. Every single person in the capital has seen you sitting inside Princess Xinyang’s carriage!”
“That person hasn’t seen.” Xiao Ji said, pointing at a beggar on the roadside.
Chang Jing replied expressionlessly, “Because he is blind.”
Xiao Ji said, “Then you go tell him.”
Chang Jing: “…”
After circling another three times and only when the sky had grown completely dark did Xiao Ji finally allow Chang Jing to end this day’s parade.
“Returning to the estate now?” Chang Jing asked, his patience long gone.
Xiao Ji raised a brow. “No, enter the palace.”
As soon as they arrived at the palace gates, the two of them were taken away separately by Eunuch Wei, who served the Emperor, and Eunuch Su, who served Empress Xiao.
In the imperial study, the Emperor opened his mouth several times but hesitated each time.
Qin Fengwen glanced at him calmly and asked, “Your Majesty, what is it that you wish to say?”
The Emperor felt that familiar terror of being commanded by an elder sister.
He wiped the sweat from his forehead in silence. She was clearly his younger sister, yet whenever she became serious, why did he always feel as though she were his elder sister instead?
In the end, the Emperor still spoke. With a sigh, he said, “Xinyang, Zhen heard that you have taken a new male favorite.”
Qin Fengwen asked strangely, “Where did this come from?”
The Emperor raised his hand. “Do not hide it from Zhen. The entire palace is filled with the rumor that you went to the borderlands, caught Xiao Ji in the act of his romantic exploits, and in a fit of jealous anger, you found a male favorite who strongly resembles Xiao Ji, then paraded through the city the whole day to humiliate him.”
Qin Fengwen’s mouth twitched. Had she spent the entire day parading for nothing?
How had Xiao Ji suddenly become her male favorite???
In Kunning Palace, Xiao Ji was also being mercilessly interrogated by Empress Xiao. “Brother, tell me the truth, is the rumor out there real? Did you truly bring an unfamiliar woman back to the capital? And did you really let the entire city witness it? Have you finally reached your limit with that woman and decided to rise up and resist?!”
Xiao Ji frowned deeply. What in the world was she talking about?
Empress Xiao, being his biological sister, naturally took his side. She said straightforwardly, “Honestly, she has treated you so poorly all these years, you should have taken a concubine long ago just to spite her! What is the woman’s status? If it’s not high enough, I will elevate her title for you, and make sure your beloved becomes a noble concubine!”
Xiao Ji looked at his sister with genuine concern.
If you make Qin Fengwen a noble concubine, are you not afraid she will stuff one hundred concubines into the Emperor’s palace in return?
After going through so much effort to show off their affection, the end result was nothing but chaos, which left the husband and wife thoroughly exasperated.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
