Chapter 557: Intervention
Chapter 557: Intervention
"Oh? You’re better than I expected," the man said with a playful smile. "But that’s as far as it goes. You won’t be able to defeat me."
He pulled back his dagger, twisted his wrist, and aimed the sharp tip at Kamari’s shoulder blade.
Kamari reacted in time and dodged, but the blade still grazed her skin, drawing fresh blood.
"It hurts..." she whispered, gritting her teeth.
The man gave her no chance to recover. He leapt into the air, twisted his body, and drove a kick into her face.
Caught off guard, Kamari was struck head-on and sent flying to the side.
Without pausing, the man rushed forward and plunged his dagger into her shoulder.
Kamari had no time to evade and let out a pained groan.
He twisted the dagger, deepening the wound and intensifying her agony.
The overwhelming pain made her body go rigid. At last, unable to endure it any longer, she lost consciousness.
"What a weak maid," he sneered.
He pulled out the dagger, and blood flowed freely from the wound.
The man didn’t spare her another glance. Instead, he turned to Kaede, who remained frozen in fear.
"Your time is up, Princess. Now, sleep peacefully," he said coldly.
He bent his knees and charged toward her. When only a meter separated them, he twisted his dagger and aimed the blade at Kaede’s neck.
Kaede could only stare blankly at the incoming attack. In that instant, time seemed to slow.
The man’s strike looked as if it were playing in slow motion.
’Am I really going to die here?’
The thought crossed her mind, followed by fear and unwillingness.
When the tip of the blade was only a few centimeters from her neck, and Kaede had already accepted her fate, something unexpected happened.
A black shadow burst forward at incredible speed, as if tearing through space, and slammed into the man, delivering a brutal kick to his face.
Boom!
His body was sent flying five meters before slamming into the wall, cracks spreading from the impact.
"Pfft!"
His eyes widened as blood spilled from his mouth. The impact was so violent it felt as if his spine had shattered.
His vision blurred, then slowly cleared.
"Who... who did that!?" he roared, blood trailing from the corner of his lips.
"Oh? You’re still alive after that? Impressive," a playful voice sounded from in front of him.
Startled, the man looked up and saw a woman in her twenties watching him with a calm expression.
She was strikingly beautiful, with long silver hair cascading down her back.
"You... who are you? How dare you attack me?" he demanded angrily, struggling to his feet.
But the intense pain made him sway.
"Me?" Evalyn let out a soft chuckle and brushed her hair back. "I’m the one who’s going to kill you."
Those arrogant words darkened the man’s face. In his entire life, no one had ever spoken to him like that—this was the first time.
"You’re courting death," he growled.
Ignoring the pain wracking his body, he lunged at Evalyn and swung his fist.
As an assassin, he was skilled not only in eliminating targets but also in direct combat.
Evalyn’s earlier attack had injured him, but that was only because he had been caught off guard. Otherwise, he would never have been driven into such a state.
Facing his charge, Evalyn showed no fear. She sidestepped with ease, clenched her left hand into a fist, and drove it into his stomach.
"Pfft!"
The man choked as he was sent flying backward.
Evalyn didn’t give him a moment to recover. She dashed forward and launched another strike.
While the two were locked in fierce combat, Nolan walked over to Kamari and checked her condition.
"The wound is severe," he muttered.
The stab wound in her shoulder was deep. Blood continued to seep out, and torn flesh was visible where the dagger had been yanked free.
Fortunately, she was still breathing. Otherwise, there would have been nothing he could do.
Nolan placed his left palm over her shoulder. A purplish-black light glowed beneath his hand and began mending the wound.
The process was quick—barely a minute. When it was over, Nolan rose to his feet and gave a slight nod.
He turned toward Kaede and walked over.
"Are you okay?"
Kaede, who had been staring at the floor, trembled. With stiff movements, she raised her head and met Nolan’s calm gaze.
"You..."
She was about to speak, but Nolan crouched first and pressed his index finger gently against the lips of her mask.
"Sshh... Don’t say anything yet. We need to get out of here. Can you stand?"
Kaede felt her face grow hot beneath the mask at his sudden gesture. But she understood the urgency of the situation.
"I... I can stand."
She tried to straighten up, but her legs gave out. Her body felt weak, as if all her strength had drained away.
"Hah..." Nolan let out a quiet sigh.
Without hesitation, he bent down and lifted her in a princess carry.
"Y-You... What are you doing?" she asked in panic.
Even the language she used changed. She switched from the Central Continent’s tongue to the Eastern language.
Fortunately, Nolan was fluent in it. His mother had taught him since childhood.
"Can you stay quiet? Look at the situation," Nolan scolded her in the Eastern language.
Kaede froze at his tone. No one had ever spoken to her like that before.
Strangely, she didn’t feel angry. Instead, she lowered her head, too embarrassed to meet his eyes.
Ignoring her reaction, Nolan walked toward the nearest room. Kaede’s condition wasn’t truly serious.
She was simply shaken by what had happened, leaving her body weak and unsteady.
"Oh, right. I almost forgot."
Nolan suddenly stopped and turned around.
"Evalyn, don’t hold back. If possible, torture him and find out who’s behind all this. Understood?"
Boom!
Evalyn’s fist slammed into the man’s face, sending him crashing to the floor.
"Of course! Even without you telling me, I’d do that," Evalyn replied enthusiastically, rubbing her right fist.
Nolan smiled in satisfaction. Without another word, he turned and left.
Evalyn looked down at the man and grinned.
"Now, let’s begin the game..."
...
Slash!
The man in the black robe cut down one of the soldiers, then kicked the body aside.
He panted heavily as he glanced at the chaos around him.
"Damn... The three of them are pressuring me. Luckily, Tugor is already chasing Princess Kaede. Once he succeeds, our plan will be complete," he muttered weakly.
"Oh? Are you sure it will succeed? What if I say otherwise?"
A playful voice came from behind him.
Startled, he tried to turn around—but a hand seized him first and twisted his neck.
In an instant, his vision went black, and his body collapsed to the floor with a dull thud.
Nolan smiled faintly and shook his head.
"What a piece of trash..."
