Chapter 637: The Long-Awaited Chaos (2)
"Nolan, where are you? You’re still right here with me, aren’t you?"
Elsa’s panicked voice came from beside him.
At the same time, Nolan felt her hands groping along his body, sending a chill down his spine.
"Stop!" Nolan shouted, quickly pulling her hands away.
If he didn’t stop her immediately, her hands would likely slip lower, which would be extremely dangerous.
Elsa felt both embarrassed and relieved. She was afraid of the dark, so she panicked when everything turned pitch black around them.
"Sorry, I’m afraid of the dark. Can you hold my hand a little longer?" she asked in a pleading voice.
Nolan wanted to refuse, but he could sense her sincerity and reluctantly agreed.
"Alright. But keep your hand where it should be. Just hold mine," he warned seriously.
"I understand. Don’t worry, I won’t do that," Elsa assured him earnestly.
Nolan nodded in satisfaction and looked around calmly. Although it was dark, it didn’t affect him at all.
With the Eye of Chaos, he could see everything as if the lights were still on.
’He’s gone,’ he muttered, narrowing his eyes.
The "he" Nolan referred to was Meliodas. The man had somehow vanished from where he had been.
’Could he be hiding somewhere, securing a safe place before the chaos begins?’ he wondered.
Just then, Gulvar’s angry voice echoed through the hall.
"What’s going on? Why did the lights go out? Where are the servants!?"
"I’m sorry, Your Majesty. There’s a technical issue. The servants are checking it. Please wait a moment," a middle-aged man replied, his voice trembling.
Gulvar was furious. This was Alina’s birthday party and a reflection of the royal family.
Such an incident happening in the middle of the event was nothing short of a disgrace.
Gulvar looked around with a grim expression and said, "I apologize, everyone. Please wait a moment. The lights will be restored shortly."
Although he couldn’t see the young nobles’ faces, he could sense their unease.
His words made the guests breathe a sigh of relief. One of them replied, "It’s all right, Your Majesty. We understand."
The others quickly followed, offering words to flatter him.
In truth, they were quite dissatisfied with the situation. Most of them feared the darkness.
That fear wasn’t because of monsters but because of death itself.
In such darkness, danger could be right in front of them, waiting to strike.
So, they feared there might be a reason behind the sudden loss of light.
But they didn’t dare voice their dissatisfaction. Otherwise, they and their families could suffer the consequences.
"Seira, don’t worry. I’ll protect you!"
Aldrian turned toward Seira beside him. Even in the darkness, he knew she was right there.
Seira rolled her eyes. She wasn’t a child—this level of darkness didn’t scare her at all.
Moreover, she already knew from Nolan that chaos was about to break out, and the culprit was Meliodas, the third prince.
So, she remained completely calm.
Receiving no response, Aldrian panicked and reached out with both hands, calling out, "Seira, are you there? Seira!"
When his hand brushed against her arm, Seira shuddered and quickly stepped aside.
"I’m right here!" she snapped.
Aldrian felt both embarrassed and relieved. He quickly apologized. "Sorry, I didn’t mean to. I was just worried you might suddenly disappear."
"Suddenly disappear? You’re being childish," Seira sneered coldly.
In a situation like this, the best thing to do was remain calm and wait for the lights to return.
Soon, a few servants walked around, lighting candles in several places.
The guests felt relieved at the sight of light. At least now, they could see, even if only a little.
Nolan calmly surveyed his surroundings. Then, suddenly, he sensed a faint movement from the left side of the hall.
’It’s finally beginning,’ he muttered with a faint smile.
A young noble was chatting with another noble beside him.
But suddenly, a sharp pain struck his neck.
Confused, he touched it and saw blood on his palm.
"Huh? Blood?" His eyes widened.
Before he could react, his vision spun—and the next instant, his head dropped silently onto the carpet.
Blood gushed from his severed neck like a fountain.
The noble who had been speaking with him froze on the spot.
His breathing turned ragged, his heart pounding violently, as if something heavy had slammed into his chest.
The next moment, he snapped out of it and screamed at the top of his lungs, "Dead... He’s dead!"
The cry startled everyone. But before they could react, the same scene unfolded in several places, followed by terrified screams.
"A corpse! Ahhh! Someone’s dead here!"
"No! My fiancé! Arghh!"
"Help! Someone’s dead!"
Chaos erupted, and panic spread instantly.
Gulvar, Melody, Karakh, and Aldrian were clearly shocked by the sudden incident.
"Your Majesty, please leave at once! We’re under attack!"
Eldrin’s urgent voice rang out from behind him.
Gulvar’s eyes widened. "An attack? Who would dare!?"
"Most likely assassins disguised as guests, Your Majesty. This is extremely dangerous. Please leave immediately with Her Majesty, the princes, and Princess Alina. Alex will escort you—I’ll handle the rest."
Gulvar had many questions, but the situation didn’t allow it. He had no choice but to retreat first.
"Everyone, move!" Gulvar ordered.
He pulled Alina and Melody toward the back. Karakh and Aldrian quickly realized the danger and followed.
Aldrian didn’t forget Seira. Strangely, she remained calm and unflustered, not even trying to bring Nolan along.
Unfortunately, no one noticed this oddity, as everyone was already panicking due to the sudden attack.
"N-Nolan, what’s happening? Why are there so many screams?"
Elsa’s voice trembled with fear as she clung tightly to his arm, unwilling to let him go.
"Hired assassins. They’re targeting the young nobles," Nolan replied coldly.
"Hired assassins?" Elsa’s face turned pale. "Who would dare do that? Aren’t they afraid of death!?"
Creating chaos in the palace was no different from provoking the kingdom into war.
No matter how powerful those assassins were, once this was over, Gulvar would surely retaliate and wipe out their base without mercy.
"How would I know?" Nolan rolled his eyes. "What matters now is getting out of here alive."
Elsa said nothing as Nolan pulled her away from their spot.
But suddenly—
Boom!
An explosion thundered behind them. A moment later, Elsa sensed something rushing toward her from behind.
The scent of death gripped her, causing her body to stiffen under the overwhelming killing intent.
She knew she had been targeted by one of the assassins.
"Am I going to die?"
