Chapter 2036: Worthy to Fight Beside High Lord Rashal
Chapter 2036: Worthy to Fight Beside High Lord Rashal
Two hits.
All it took for Rex to take down two High Millinars with immense battle experience was two hits.
Such a feat sent a shockwave that rippled through the onlookers—surprised that this was even possible.
Most doubted High Lord Rashal’s choice, yes, but they still had gone through battles under him. High Lord Rashal was no fool—so the other High Millinars and even the wives expected the stranger that he picked to give a good resistance.
But to win as easily as this was beyond their expectations.
Vadyn, who had seen Rex’s change earlier, gasped in utter shock when the two High Millinars fell.
She wouldn’t have been surprised if Rex had defeated them in his Lycan form—the form she believed was him at his strongest. But he had not. He’d beaten them in his human body, without reaching for his full power. And he’d done it easily.
Instinctively, she snapped her head towards Davina and Lilliana.
To see whether the two were also surprised, but they weren’t.
"Is... Is this normal?" She asked.
"Pretty much," Lilliana said, shrugging her shoulders nonchalantly. "He was always like this. Frankly, I don’t understand how come his enemies could be so stupid. If they wanted to defeat him—then make sure that their attempt would kill him for good. Otherwise, he’ll only get stronger. Better yet, they should simply befriend him instead of stubbornly fighting him."
"He was nothing when I first encountered him," Davina added. "And now, look at him."
"I can’t believe it..." Vadyn shook her head in a daze. "What even is he?"
On the other hand, High Lord Rashal wasn’t surprised at all.
Even from the moment he stepped onto the rooftop and laid his eyes on Rex—he could already tell that Rex had grown exponentially stronger compared to three days ago. All Rex needed was access, and he could make full use of it.
Anyone who could grow stronger as fast as him would be called a monster.
But at this moment, High Lord Rashal was glad that he did.
’Making a pact with him was the right choice.’ He thought inside as the corner of his lips curled faintly.
Seeing the two High Millinars defeated easily, the other High Millinars’ faces turned grim. Each one of them felt an electric current coursing through their veins—making their bodies tremble at the eagerness to put Rex in his place.
None of them could accept their comrades being humiliated like this.
Only a veil of sanity barred their anger from exploding, and Rex could feel it.
However, his eyes were fixed on Elizabeth, whose face was now contorted in anger and shame.
It seemed she really didn’t expect him to beat the two High Millinars, especially this easily.
"Imagine seeing yourselves through my eyes." Rex lowered his arms—and scanned the crowd before him, and then he walked to the side, taking slow—and deliberate steps. "Families of the High Lord with a thin strand of respect. Officers and spouses with no loyalty, standing as one with no shame.
"Pathetic."
His last word rang across the area and stabbed into their hearts like a cold blade of an enemy.
Considering this situation from a stranger’s perspective, it was indeed a pathetic sight.
High Lord Rashal had put immense deliberation—and even suffered through humiliation in total silence so that he could make this situation happen. Make the Purgation Duel happen. And without a doubt, he had already thought about the situation immensely.
Picking Rex and Davina was not something he did out of impulse.
Or because the situation swayed him to do so.
No—this was a deliberate decision that he had already contemplated greatly alone, without influence.
It was the single and most likely move that would help him with the Purgation Duel.
He had seen the same fire that he had inside Rex’s eyes. It was a flame that he trusted—one that saved lives and ended threats countless times. That instinct guided him, leading him to choose Rex and Davina to fight alongside him and Vadyn in the battle that would decide his future.
And yet, these people who were loyal to him gathered and doubted his decision.
Adding unnecessary fuss because of their selfishness.
Advising the High Lord is most welcome, but pressuring him to change his mind like this is pathetic.
No matter from what angle, this situation was a really bad look for them.
Embarrassment spread across their faces, making them even angrier than before, but Rex didn’t stop.
He turned and walked to the other side, still scanning the crowd with his crimson eyes.
"Where were all of you when he was humiliated?" Rex continued—but his eyes were now fixed on the one who started this unnecessary situation. "Where were you when the High Lord was pressured from all sides—by his enemies? Because... I was there. Helping. You think I am a nobody because all of you were simply not there.
"Because I have been helping him resist this storm from the very beginning. You guys aren’t worthy to represent him." He stopped and swept his gaze again, staring into the wrathful eyes that were now fixed on him. "I am."
"Enough!"
Kaboom—!
Just then, the air shattered as another aura detonated.
It was a column of energy so thick it seemed to solidify the very space around it.
Even the distortion field rippled violently, struggling to contain the sheer force of the presence that now stepped forward. The oldest High Millinar shed his uniform with deliberate, unhurried motions like he was going to take care of this easily, revealing a body carved from centuries of war.
His muscles coiled and rippled beneath skin marked by countless battles.
And when he ripped the long sleeves from his arms, the fabric tore like paper.
Every movement was a promise.
He stepped forward, and wrath itself seemed to take shape across his face. His eyes, ancient and burning, locked onto Rex—with a hatred so pure it felt like a physical weight. Once his mouth opened to speak, his voice was a baritone growl, rough and deep, like stone grinding against stone.
"You spoke too much." He said as he walked. "You have no right to speak to Elizabeth that way."
"Hm..." Rex’s lips curled into a teasing smile. "So, you’re the one she approached to organize this. You should’ve kept your mouth shut, but now your cover was blown. And you also sounded like you favour her more than your High Lord."
Even with the provocation, the old High Millinar didn’t respond.
Instead, he took his position, spine upright, and shoulders squared powerfully.
And then, immortal energy seeped out from his body.
It coated his body seamlessly, a second skin that flowed over his frame with an ease that matched—no, surpassed—Rex’s own. The control was immaculate, honed over hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years. He was a warrior who had mastered not just his body but the very essence of his power.
His aura alone was heavier than the two High Millinars from before.
Moreover, his battle intent was so strong that it pressed around the rooftop like a storm front.
Rex could tell that this old High Millinar was stronger than Alexander.
Perhaps the strongest among them.
His muscles bulged as he assumed a stance Rex had never seen before—an open palm extended in front, and an upside-down fist coiled at his hip. It was a martial form that did not exist in the Mortal Realm— ancient and alien, and the precision of it spoke of a lifetime dedicated to its mastery.
He glared at Rex with unbridled fury.
"I’ll show you," He growled with a snarl, "that you are still not strong enough to fight beside High Lord Rashal."
Rex tilted his head, his expression unreadable. Then, without even glancing at the old High Millinar, he spoke directly to Elizabeth. His voice was calm, almost lazy, as if the towering warrior before him was little more than an afterthought.
"Are you sure about this, Elizabeth?" He asked with the same smile on his face. "If this one loses," he glanced at the other two High Millinars, still on the ground groaning in pain, "badly, the Red Skull Elite Force’s face will be in the dirt. I would even suggest High Lord Rashal do a full evaluation. We don’t want incompetent officers, now, would we?"
For the first time, Elizabeth’s composure cracked.
Her crossed arms trembled beneath her chest, and her jaw clenched tight.
Even the blonde woman on High Lord Rashal’s other side, the other wife, shot her a worried glance—concern flickered in her eyes. This was not a good look. If the impossible happened, then the High Lord wouldn’t hesitate to do exactly what Rex said.
It was evidently clear by now that High Lord Rashal valued Rex.
Despite the fact that the old High Millinar’s fury was a weapon, Rex had turned it against them.
Letting this happen would be unreasonable.
Soon, the old High Millinar’s foot shifted, and the ground cracked beneath him as he prepared to launch.
But Elizabeth’s voice rang out right on time.
"Stop."
Almost instantly, the old High Millinar froze in place as the word echoed through the silence. He turned to look over his shoulder, his muscles still coiled—and his face still twisted with barely contained rage. "Don’t give in to him, Lady Elizabeth. I can defeat him."
Elizabeth looked at him, and then back at Rex.
Even now, he remained still with the same smug smile curling on his lips.
No matter how she looked at it, Rex seemed utterly confident.
And there was a big chance that even the old High Millinar would lose to him, and that’d be a problem.
"I said stop." Elizabeth’s voice rang again, clearing up the tension in the air. "He has demonstrated some capability—adequate enough to serve High Lord Rashal in battle. And so, this matter is settled. He will fight in the Purgation Duel."
Her eyes swept over them, as if the decision had been hers to make all along.
Hearing this declaration made the old High Millinar recoil, like he was struck by a physical blow.
Rage still coiled inside his chest, but he eventually lowered his arms and straightened.
"You’re lucky." He said silently.
"Luck is part of strength, too." Rex snickered with contempt—and it cut deep. "Now sit this battle out and think long and hard about where you went wrong. Even a dog could reflect, so I suggest you attempt your best to do so. After the Purgation Duel was won, who knows? Your head might be the first one on the block."
"Vadyn," High Lord Rashal’s commanding voice rang. "Bring them to the meeting room and give them warm hospitality."
"Yes, cousin." Vadyn nodded and turned towards Rex and the others.
She gestured for them to follow and started toward the staircase, cutting through the crowd of fools still stirring unrest without grasping the full picture. As they walked, she began to explain the history of the place—calm, measured, as if the chaos around them was beneath her attention.
As it turns out, this place held real history for Larta City.
Once the four of them disappeared into the building, silence choked the air on the rooftop.
High Lord Rashal didn’t address the others.
His eyes simply fixed on Elizabeth.
"During our first meeting, your strong personality and unyielding spirit enthralled me. Perhaps because I had only returned from war, your traits had smitten me. I see you as someone who can stand beside me as my equal," High Lord Rashal said; his voice was more tender than normal. "Another eagle who could fly beside me.
"But now," His voice dropped to an arctic depth. "Your traits had become an eyesore."
Such a statement caught Elizabeth completely off guard.
Even the High Millinars and the blond woman were completely stunned.
But since it had come to this, there was no need for formalities.
"In the last few years, I always wanted a son from you, and you refused every time. I’m thankful." High Lord Rashal’s lips curled into a smile. "After the Purgation Duel, I’ll come and explain the situation to the Marnlii Family. Explain that you had cornered me.
"So, with a heavy heart, I have no other choice but to divorce you."
