Chapter 2037: The Strategy (1)
The Iron Rose Tower.
It was the building that Rex and the others were in right now.
A historical place where the founding figures once gathered to declare their victories and subjugations over the ancient clans. It was here, within these glass walls, that Larta City was first conceived—before it swelled into the massive and established hive city it was today.
Now, the Iron Rose Tower had become a limited-access place.
It was only used as a secondary headquarters during a crisis involving the entire city.
Perhaps Larta City wasn’t going through an existential crisis right now, but due to the powerful defense mechanisms that surrounded this building, even stronger than the ones protecting the main headquarters, High Lord Rashal decided to hold their last meeting here.
A place that the enemies most certainly could not reach.
Even getting into the ten-mile range of the Iron Rose Tower is incredibly hard.
Rex hadn’t been given the grace to see the building from its main entrance, but from what he could see, the entirety of it was made of black steel—and black-tinted glass. Bright luminaires assigned in intervals dotted the outside with invisible wiring, and nothing inside the building could be seen from the outside.
Heck, even Rex couldn’t use his energy to probe the insides of the building.
Only the System’s scanning feature could pierce through.
Despite the incident on the rooftop, Vadyn led them with long, unburdened strides—there was no weight in her steps against the marble floor, no hesitation as she answered their questions along the way. Davina and Lilliana were the most curious.
Both of their attention was pulled to the robots—no, androids.
Seamless machine that moved through the corridors all around them, doing chores.
Seeing these things fascinated them, while Rex was completely unimpressed.
Back in Ratmawati City, there were also these kinds of androids, so he wasn’t total foreign to the sight.
One thing that caught his attention was the androids that reacted like real human people.
No stiffness or a robotic stutter that his sharp eyes could pick.
Rex scanned the android standing beside the executive lift—a figure shaped like a man, one hand resting lightly on his chest. He stood perfectly upright, dressed in a neat, classy black uniform traced with sleek silver linings.
And when he noticed Rex’s gaze, he smiled.
His expression was that of an actual person.
And once Rex read the description notification, he realized that this man was a puppet, an independent puppet that was empowered by the power source somewhere inside the Iron Rose Tower. And Rex also read that it had an ego.
It was the reason why this man looked like an actual person.
Soon, the four of them arrived at a spacious room.
"Here we are." Vadyn kept the door open with her body, making way for Rex and the others to enter.
Inside was a spacious, square-shaped room surrounded entirely by glass walls—making it seem like one stepped into a polished glass box. Even though the glass was tinted near-black, a faint pale white shimmer ran through it, keeping the darkness from feeling absolute.
At the centerpiece was a rectangle-shaped dark wood table with a black iron base.
Eight square panels of light shone from above, filling the room with a cool, even glow. Across from the door, a vast painting hung on the glass wall—an abstract canvas of white veined with smoky black. Or perhaps it was black veined with smoky white.
Such a painting made Rex more uncertain which one was which the longer he looked.
Regardless, it completed the classy and high-class feeling of the room.
One that made him remember the places he had been in Ratmawati City.
"What is this place?" Lilliana asked as she sat down on the right side of the table—while still scanning the entire room. "It looked... simplistic but grand at the same time, even though there was no emerald— or gold around. I’ve never seen something like this."
"It’s a strange room indeed, and I feel like I’m being choked," Davina added as she also sat down.
"Ah... Spirit Realm, am I right?" Vadyn chuckled a bit as she went to the seats across from the two, not forgetting to gesture for Rex to sit—on the single seat facing the painting. "This kind of design is pretty normal in this realm and the realm where Rex came from."
"Not that common." Rex sat down with a low groan, finally sitting down. "It’s mainly reserved for high-end establishments."
"How can something be considered a high-end establishment without gold and jade?" Davina asked.
"I’m fairly certain he meant in a professional setting." Vadyn crossed the room and stopped in front of the corner table, filled several glasses with pale green water from a crystal pitcher, and set a glass before Rex, Davina, and Lilliana before taking her own. "It’s a local refreshment. Go ahead and have a try. We are waiting for High Lord Rashal, anyway."
Rex didn’t even scan the drink as he lifted the cold glass and tasted the refreshment.
It was a sight that put a smile on Vadyn’s face.
"Hm..." Rex lowered the glass, a trace of satisfaction in his nod. "That’s good. A real refreshment." He set the half-empty glass down, smacking his lips lightly. "Tasted like cold tea—but clean, no sharp and persistent aftertaste. What exactly is it made of?"
Davina and Lilliana also sipped the cold water and nodded.
Both waited for Rex to drink it first out of reflex, as that was the proper etiquette for nobles.
"Just water mixed with special leaves from a special tree that only grew mature in three hundred years," Vadyn shrugged her shoulders and reclined on her seat, sipping on the cold refreshment. "A refreshment for the bosses."
A moment later, the door finally opened again.
High Lord Rashal stepped inside, and surprisingly, his two wives also followed right behind.
He sat on the seat below the painting, while the two wives sat on Vadyn’s side.
Out of complete spite, Vadyn rose from her seat and settled down beside Davina, near High Lord Rashal.
"I apologise for the wait." High Lord Rashal drew the chair closer and settled in—crossing his arms on the table. "And for the incident earlier. I am embarrassed. Given the gravity of our situation, something like that should never have occurred."
Rex glanced at Elizabeth, who surprisingly looked uncomfortable, and then back to High Lord Rashal.
"No need to apologise." He waved his hand. "I completely understand."
"Very well. Since time is short, let’s begin." High Lord Rashal pressed his palm flat against the table—and the invisible seams beneath the dark wood flared to life with a static, bluish glow. Seven holographic cards flickered into the air above the table. "As you’ll recall—we are outnumbered. Four against seven. A devastating deficit of three.
"I will have no other choice but to engage with Ursa, but I can use my power to trap another in the Pure Black dimension." He settled his gaze on Rex. "I have already used it on you, Rex, during our very first meeting in my office."
Rex nodded his head.
He remembered the Pure Black Dimension, which was a dimension of complete white.
"To make it clear, I am stronger than Ursa; there was no doubt about it." High Lord Rashal stated—and it seemed to be a well-known truth, as Vadyn and his wives didn’t seem to be surprised by that. "Being aware of everyone’s strength is paramount, so I’m telling you this. Because of that, I could take on four of them at the same time."
"But the other two wouldn’t want to engage with you," Rex intervened. "Since you’re the strongest, the enemy’s plan should be to take out all of us and leave you last."
"Yes," High Lord Rashal confirmed with a nod. "That’s why two of you will have to fight at a complete disadvantage—each holding off two opponents at once. I believe Vadyn and you, Rex, are the pair best suited for that burden. Hold out until Davina, or I, eliminate one, shifting the balance in our favour."
"Not a good idea." Davina shook her head. "That’s assuming we’re the first to take out one."
"What is your reasoning?"
"I excelled in war; that’s where my power shines the most. A duel is not my strongest suit. Instead—I’ll be creating chaos, opportunities for the three of you to take the enemies out."
"I remembered the report about you—from High Millinar Alexander," High Lord Rashal said, recalling the report that stated her ability to cause cataclysmic explosions. "And chaos would indeed work in our favour—as there are more of them and fewer of us. But this also means one needs to fight three opponents at once."
None of the warriors from High Lord Ursa’s side would want to duke it out with High Lord Rashal.
It was obvious that they were going to aim for the backline first.
So, naturally, one has to take the fall.
"Vadyn could do that," Elizabeth added. "Your Glass World Oustification is capable of occupying three at the same time."
"No," Vadyn shook her head, and then turned her head towards Rex. "I think he’ll fare better."
Elizabeth and the blond woman turned to look at Rex.
Surprise could be seen flashing behind their eyes.
As High Lord Rashal’s only remaining relative, Vadyn had been showered with resources—making her power far exceed the norm, even for Enforcers of her rank. Her only true weakness was her divinity, as it was something that couldn’t be granted, only earned through her service to the Overseer of Realms.
Other than that, her power was quite terrifying.
In a different league compared to the High Millinars, at least the ones who gathered on the rooftop.
For her to be saying that Rex would fare better was quite surprising.
"How strong are you now?" High Lord Rashal finally asked.
"More than twice stronger than three days ago," Rex raised his hand—and then summoned a miniature moon above the palm of his hand. "And I also made a pact with the Goddess of the Greater Moon. I’m pretty sure I can take on four of them if I really try."
"Are you that confident?"
"Yes, but there was one variable that we needed to contemplate."
"One problem? What is it?"
"Diamantona..."
High Lord Rashal’s brows furrowed together. He didn’t recognize the name, but he could tell that Rex was talking about that strange warrior that High Lord Ursa chose. "I know that he was like you, a warrior from another realm. But who is he, exactly?"
"I can’t really tell you his identi—"
"You can’t?" Elizabeth cut before he could even finish his sentence. "Or you don’t want to?"
"I can’t say anything about his identity because that’ll put everyone in this room at risk," Rex continued, glancing sharply at Elizabeth. "I’m not going to put those close to me at risk of death, and I assume the High Lord is also the same."
"He’s that dangerous?" High Lord Rashal asked—there was surprise in his eyes.
"Let’s say that he’s as dangerous as me," Rex said with a shrug.
Considering that the two of them were Scions of the Vertex, though coming from a different stratum, it was not an exaggeration to say that Diamantona was as dangerous as he was. Who knows? He might even be more dangerous.
After all, he even evoked the wrath of a stronger Scion, the Uncrowned Matron of Ire, and lived.
"And what do you propose to do about this... Diamantona?" High Lord Rashal asked.
"I want you to trap him away—in your Pure Black Dimension," Rex stated firmly. "Though he’s really dangerous, he didn’t like fighting, so he might not try to get out."
"Then we’ll do that."
"But I have one more request."
"Say it."
"Even if you find the opportunity to kill Diamantona... don’t," Rex said as his voice grew colder and more wicked with each passing word. His crimson eyes flashed, and his lips curled into a devious smirk. "Because he’s mine. He’s my prey."
