Chapter 376: Clashing with the Barbarians! - Part 1

The barbarian warriors were taken by surprise after listening to the words of warning by the humans. Havok broke out in the warrior's midst as they started talking to each about the betrayal, about the pact, and about the punishment from the Ulesis if words reached her ears and whatnot. Some didn't believe the words of the humans but they were in tiny numbers.

Those who did believe became increasingly angry with their chief.

The four Barbarian elders that stood beside Romethra gulped in fear after they saw their chief's red eyes and increasingly furious face.

When the mayhem between the warriors increased, any voice reverberated loudly in the plains.

"Silence!"

All the warriors looked back to where Romethra was standing upon heading him shout.

"What are you all getting so furious about? Do you believe the words of those deceitful humans to be true?"

"But aren't we breaking the pact? The Ullesis won't-" one of the Barbarian warriors spoke up only to be silenced again when he saw the chief glaring at him with angry red eyes.

"We are not breaking any treaty. Do you hear me? I have no intention of breaking the pact that our much respected Ullesis had made with the humans." Romethra shouted so everyone could hear him speak.

"Everyone knows that it was the human named Bardrick who came to us asking for our help against his enemies. I'm not breaking any law as there are no set rules that state we couldn't fight in battles between humans while taking a side." Romethra said as he looked into the eyes of disgruntled subordinates.

He further said, "I ask you all, how are those humans who call themselves mercenaries able to roam through our forest without breaking the pact? There are many times we clashed with them in our forest wrestling with them for rare herbs, and Demon Beasts in the past.

Countless times those mercenaries had destroyed a small barbarian tribe and we killed them in return but that did not break the treaty then. Why should it be any different now?"

Romethra knew how weak a reason he was giving to his men in order to legitimize this war. It's not like every barbarian was aware of what was written in the treaty. So he could lie with a straight face to them that whatever they are doing would not go against their supreme leader Ullesis.  He cannot afford for his men to back out, now of all time, he was so close to achieving his goal.

Once he does that, once he acquires that power,

"It was the human lord Bardrick who asked to fight his enemies with the promise of all the wealth we can loot in that time. We cannot be blamed by anyone for breaking the pact because we are not the ones starting this war."

"Trust me, after we raze those human towns and cities to the grounds and fill our hands full of their shiny gold, fine weapons, and a couple of women for each of us to take back and warm our beds, you would be thanking me for granting you all this opportunity.

'Once I defeat the enemy in front and complete the sacrificial ritual on a large scale, no one in the whole continent would be able to go against me. No One!' Romethra grinned wickedly as he thought about his future and turned his menacing gaze toward the human army sitting atop the small hill.

. . .

Mary and her ex-pirate group had made their tents at the back of the army as they were ordered. Just last night they had rushed here from Cosla city after they received a letter from King Danny about their mission. They needed to help Danny's army to fight against the Barbarians intending to invade his newly acquired land.

Mary grumbled about the situation to no end but she needed to do her part of the deal in order to acquire Danny's support for Lisa and that damned key. She would have to help Danny to defend his kingdom lands until peace finally descend upon it. Hearing about how the war with the Armen went, Mary's respect for the young king was raised.

Now only these accursed Barbarians were left to deal with and then she would able to get the key from Danny for her help.

"What are you thinking, Captain?" Rea came to her side and asked softly as the other members of the pirate group donned their new armor lent by the subordinate of King Danny back at the Cosla city. They were trying to get used to it as soon as possible so that they can face the barbarians with more protection than what would be provided by their leather clothes.

"Nothing much. Just thinking when would I be able to see Lisa. . . If I will be able to see Lisa at all" Mary replied as she looked at the soldiers getting ready in formation to face their most dreaded enemy 'the Barbarians' in a frontal battle out in an open field.

"Don't worry about it, Captain. We will be fine. I just now overheard that someone important had arrived in the commander's tent and that he is strong enough to handle the elites of the Barbarian Army alone, making our work much easier than what it would have been before." Rea gave out the information readily to assuage her Captain's fear.

"What do you mean? Who has arrived? Is it Danny?" Mary asked in surprise and a little relieved too.

"Wait, wasn't he battling with the Armen army just three days ago? That is what the commander said right? How can he arrive here so fast?" Mary said with her brows creased in thought.
