Chapter 392: The Miraculous Shield
Chapter 392: The Miraculous Shield
As the sword plunged deeper into his chest, its cruel tip nearing his heart, Romethra was consumed by excruciating pain. With blood filling his mouth, he let out a feral scream, his rage overpowering the agony.
"Arghhhh!!!!!"
In a last-ditch effort, he summoned all his remaining strength, channeling it into his shoulder muscles. They bulged and tensed, the increased resistance making it impossible for the sword to penetrate any further. Veins throbbed on his forehead as he fought to maintain his desperate grip on life.
"Just a little bit more!" Mary's muscles strained with the effort as she tried to drive the sword deeper. Every inch was a battle against Romethra's formidable strength. Beads of sweat formed on her forehead, her breaths labored. She knew that just a little more, and she could end this threat for good.
The blade trembled with the force exerted upon it, inching ever so slowly towards its fatal destination.
"Mary!" Pero's warning came just in time. Mary, focused on pushing the sword further into Romethra's chest, suddenly felt a chill and danger.
In a desperate maneuver, Romethra's right arm, with its wicked claws embedded deep within Pero's body, jerked violently, causing Pero to tumble aside, his grip loosened. Now free from the human's hold, Romethra lunged forward like a striking serpent, aiming to deliver a crushing blow aimed at Mary's head.
Mary desperately tried to evade the incoming attack, but Romethra's speed was overwhelming. His clawed hand closed in, mere inches from her head, and it seemed like there was no escape from the deadly strike.
"I'm dead! Sorry, Silvia-" As Romethra's deadly attack closed in, Mary's thoughts turned to her friend, Silvia.
The moment of impact arrived, and Romethra's clawed hand crashed against the protective barrier surrounding Mary. The barrier absorbed the blow and began to glow with a brilliant, intensified orange light, expanding outward. Romethra's claws managed to pierce through the protective shield, but they couldn't reach Mary's body.
The powerful impact from Romethra's strike caused the flexible barrier to bounce him back, leaving him stumbling and disoriented. Meanwhile, Mary was sent flying due to the force of the blow. Despite the impact, she managed to land safely on the ground, thanks to the protective barrier that still enveloped her, shielding her from harm.
The searing pain in Romethra's left arm abruptly drew his attention. To his shock, he watched as the limb detached from his body, falling heavily to the ground.
"Damn you, filthy cunt!" Romethra cursed under his breath.
It was at this time when Pero swiftly contacted Alex, knowing that his own battle was over, to inform him about the dire situation unfolding with Mary and Romethra.
Romethra charged forward, rushing past Pero's mangled form, heading straight for Mary, whose situation Alex was now able to perceive through the eyes of the other soldier.
Mary was on her back on the ground, enveloped in an orange bubble. She was trying to stand up.
Faced with Romethra's menacing advance, Mary struggled to rise to her feet. Fortunately, the protective shield surrounding her responded, aiding her in the effort to stand.
"I will kill you bitch," said one armed Barbarian chief as he threw a punch with his remaining arm.
Mary froze for a second, the vast difference in power between her and Romethra looming like an insurmountable chasm. But to her astonishment, the protective barrier that had saved her before sprang into action once more.
It extended tentacle-like appendages, lifting her off the ground and swiftly moving her out of Romethra's charging path. The barbarian chief missed his intended strike, and Mary was spared once more as she was carried out of harm's reach by the protective entity. Romethra, undeterred, continued to chase her, but the barrier persistently shielded her from his deadly advances.
Whenever Romethra attempted to strike the barrier, it resiliently repelled his attacks, bouncing him away. Even if he sought to tear it asunder with his savage claws, the barrier would simply disassemble itself, swiftly mending any damage inflicted, and then relocate with Mary, always keeping her out of Romethra's reach.
This dynamic dance of protection continued as Mary desperately sought refuge from the relentless barbarian chief.
"Out of my way!" With an enraged bellow, Romethra smashed the Bear Demon Beast aside, clearing his path as he relentlessly pursued Mary, his burning frustration and anger driving him to extreme measures.
The situation became increasingly comical as Romethra struggled to pursue her amidst the onslaught of persistent Demon Beasts, his injuries slowing him down. Mary found herself in a bizarre predicament, with the fearsome Barbarian chief now resembling a frustrated devil, constantly chasing her yet unable to breach the barrier's protective shield.
It was a strange and surreal sight, given the circumstances.
Mary marveled at the astonishing properties of the orange, slime-like barrier that enveloped her. It had proven itself to be far more versatile and resilient than she could have ever anticipated. What intrigued her even more was that it seemed to possess a kind of sentience, reacting independently to protect her.
"No way, it can't be!" Mary's astonishment grew as she recalled the rare and legendary concept of Spirit Beasts. These enigmatic creatures were a rare sight in her world, and while she had heard stories and legends about them, she had never encountered one in real life.
A memory surfaced of Sylvia mentioning her family's ancient contract with a powerful Spirit Beast, but it had disappeared, leading to the decline of her family's strength. Such Spirit Beasts were said to be as invaluable as an Elemental Master Realm cultivator.
"Plum~!" A happy chiming sound resonated within the barrier as if responding to Mary's thoughts. She noticed two black orbs forming inside the barrier, resembling the eyes of a creature. However, these orbs were not focused on her; they were fixed on something behind her.
Before she could react, Mary felt herself bump into something or someone.
"Thank you for your help, Miss Mary. I'll take it from here," a familiar voice said. Mary immediately recognized it as Danny's.
