Chapter 393: Another War's End

"Thank you for your help, Miss Mary. I'll take it from here," a familiar voice said. Mary immediately recognized it as Danny's.

Right after, Mary sensed the orange barrier deflating and separating from her. When she glanced behind, she discovered Danny's face in close proximity, wearing a reassuring smile. She also noticed Plum being absorbed into his body.

"I failed," Mary simply replied.

"You did, but I'll give you full marks for trying," Danny said, winking at her.

Mary breathed a sigh of relief. She had never been as relieved to see a man in her life as she was to see Danny at this moment. His presence here indicated that the menacing dark cultivator had been dealt with, and that meant the barbarian chief was no longer a formidable threat for Danny to handle, given the extraordinary power he had shown earlier.

Romethra came to an abrupt halt, dumbfounded, as he gazed at the boy holding the human girl in his arms.

"Wha-! Why is he here?" Romethra questioned himself, doubting the reality of what he was witnessing. "If he is here, then - no way! That's impossible!" the barbarian chief exclaimed. It seemed inconceivable that the boy had defeated the shaman.

Before Romethra could ponder further, Danny took control of the situation. "Let's first deal with this guy," he said, his expression turning cold as he assessed the damage caused by the barbarian chief. "He has killed and injured quite a few of my men and Demon Beasts."

With those words, Aquilla materialized from behind Danny and soared straight at Romethra, who looked visibly apprehensive about the incoming bird.

Despite the overwhelming odds against him, Romethra made the decision to confront Aquilla head-on. It wasn't necessarily an act of bravery; rather, he understood that fleeing was a futile endeavor. The vast difference in strength between him and his formidable opponents left him with no escape.

While Romethra may have come to terms with his grim fate and regretted ever dealing with the shaman, he was not prepared to die without a fight.

'I have to take the bird with him if not the human boy,' he thought. Romethra surged forward, igniting his demonic energy, ready to meet Aquilla head-on, planning to strike with all his might.

Aquilla didn't give him the chance to execute his plan. She swiftly opened her beak, and an overcharged beam of lightning, brighter and more intense than any he had ever seen, surged forward with terrifying speed.

"Damn-!" Romethra's last words were a mix of anger and disbelief as he disintegrated into ashes, overwhelmed by the immense power of the electrifying beam.

Aquilla let out a triumphant cry and soared high into the sky.

Danny turned to Mary with a reassuring nod, relieved that this intense confrontation was finally over. "Well, that settles it. This war is now over," he said, offering her a smile.

As Mary gazed into Danny's eyes, something shifted within her. She had spent most of her life avoiding close contact with men, often feeling a sense of repulsion in their presence. But now, right here, next to Danny, that repulsion seemed to be fading. She couldn't pinpoint the exact reason, but there was something different about him.

His smile, warm and genuine, held a sense of comfort that she had never experienced before. The scent of his sweat was strangely appealing. Mary found herself caught in a moment of uncertainty, her heart pounding just a little faster.

Maybe it was the intensity of the battle they had just faced, or perhaps it was something else but it was attracting her towards him.

As Mary was lost in thought, Danny carried her closer to where Pero lay on the ground, his puppet's condition a source of concern.

"Pero, are you alright?" Danny inquired, though the severity of the situation was all too apparent.

Mary snapped out of her reverie upon hearing Danny's question. She gazed at Pero, his body a cruel testament to the brutal battle. His stomach bore two gaping wounds, while his lower half lay severed several meters away. The mere fact that he was still breathing and clinging to life was a shocking revelation for Mary.

"I don't think I will make it and be useful to you anymore, your grace," Pero said, his voice laden with sadness, accepting his grim fate.

Danny remained silent, a deep sigh escaping him, an unspoken acknowledgment of the loss they were about to face.

Mary, overwhelmed by the state of the loyal soldier who bravely faced the monster and his acceptance of his impending death, found herself in somber silence. The weight of the moment pressed upon her.

"I will never forget you, Ser Pero," Mary promised to which Pero gave a smile

In a matter of seconds, Pero's breaths grew faint and labored until they ceased entirely. He had passed away, leaving behind a profound sense of loss in Mary's heart.

The other soldiers arrived, solemn expressions on their faces, to collect Pero's lifeless body from the blood-stained ground. Together, they gently lifted him, carrying him back to their camp, where the aftermath of the battle was already in motion following the demise of Barbarian Chief Romethra.

"Were you injured?" Danny asked Mary as she appeared comfortable in his arms. Not that he minded one bit, he couldn't help but appreciate the feel of holding her smooth and long slender legs.

"Wha-! No I-I'm fine," Mary blushed deeply as she realized that she was still in Danny's arms.

Danny reluctantly let go of her legs and helped her stand on the ground.

"Captain Mary, are you alright?" Rea and other members of her former pirate group came running towards her.

"I'll leave you with your friends," Danny said as he turned to head back to the camp. With many things to attend to now that the war with the Barbarians was over, he needed to tend to his injured Demon beasts and ensure they could recover properly within the Demon Beast space.

"Dan-, I mean, your grace, what about the key?" Mary asked a hint of urgency in her voice.

Danny smiled and replied, "Don't worry, you've kept your end of the bargain, and I'll keep mine. Head back to the capital with the army, your friend should be arriving there soon. We can discuss the domain of the Slyvia Family at that time."
