Chapter 1259: GRANDMA'S INNER TURMOIL

"DOES Grandma Wu know about Uncle Yi Mu and Uncle Yue's relationship?" The question slipped out before Luo Yan could stop himself. The moment he realized what he had just asked, he felt a flush of embarrassment. "I'm sorry," he said quickly, lowering his eyes. "I should not have asked that."

"No, it's fine," Wu Meixiu said.

And it was fine. She was a little surprised that Luo Yan knew about her son and Jiang Yue. But then again, since he was Shen Ji Yun's friend, it really should not have been a shock. If he had visited the house before, he would have seen Shen Yi Mu and Jiang Yue together. And her son was never very subtle about his affection. So if Luo Yan had seen them interact, it would have been easy for him to figure out the nature of their relationship.

"And yes, I know about their relationship," she added, answering his earlier question.

Hearing that, Luo Yan let out a quiet sigh of relief. He had not wanted to come across as someone who enjoyed gossip. Still, he could not help feeling curious about how Grandma Wu had reacted when she first learned about the two men's relationship.

What he was thinking must have shown on his face, because Grandma Wu chuckled softly and said, "I was surprised at first, I won't lie. But it was clear how much Ah Mu loves Ah Yue. They've been through so much already. Who was I to stand in the way of their happiness? So yes, I gave them my blessing."

Wu Meixiu smiled faintly as she remembered how her son had asked to meet with her to talk about Jiang Yue. Shen Yi Mu told her about their relationship—how it began, how it ended, or as he put it, "paused," and how they rekindled their relationship. He said he wanted her to meet Jiang Yue properly. Since he had already come out of the closet, he wanted his mother to meet the love of his life.

Just by how Shen Yi Mu spoke about Jiang Yue, she could already tell how much the man meant to her son. So of course, she agreed to meet him. And she was very glad that she did.

Jiang Yue was a polite and genuinely gentle man, with a quiet warmth that put others at ease. He carried himself with a natural grace, and it was easy to see he was both thoughtful and kind. The sincerity in his eyes softened his handsome features. Wu Meixiu also admired his resilience in battling and surviving cancer. A strength she knew few could claim. But what mattered most was the way he looked at her son, with such unmistakable love and devotion that it left no doubt in her mind. And that was really all that mattered to her.

All Wu Meixiu wanted was for her children and grandchildren to be happy. So, she would support them unconditionally, as long as it did not involve anything illegal, of course. She just wished her husband shared the same sentiment. But Shen Wang Ji was already too set in his ways. A stubborn old man who clung fiercely to tradition, refused to bend his beliefs, and saw the world in strict black and white.

She had thought the tragic loss of their second child would make him rethink his rigid views, but it had the opposite effect. Shen Wang Ji became convinced that what happened to Shen Yi Zhu was a direct result of their son disobeying him and marrying someone he did not approve of. Instead of softening, he grew even more stubborn, something she had not thought was possible.

So one could only imagine how he reacted when Shen Yi Mu angrily admitted he was gay. It went very badly.

If their eldest had not been there when it happened, her husband might have suffered a heart attack. Wu Meixiu could not bring herself to blame Shen Yi Mu, though. How could she, when her son was only trying to be true to himself and honest with them? Of course, Shen Wang Ji did not see it that way.

He was so angry that he threatened to disown Shen Yi Mu. She took a firm stand then and told him that if he did that, he should expect divorce papers from her. That stopped him. But she did not fool herself into thinking it was because of her husband's deep love for her. No, she was sure it was because divorcing at their age would bring more shame to Shen Wang Ji than having a gay son. To him, a failed marriage would mean he was the one who had fallen short.

Their marriage had been arranged from the start. Wu Meixiu never really objected because that was what was expected of her. So even though there were many things she did not agree with when it came to Shen Wang Ji, she stayed by his side, offering support and managing the household like a proper wife. That was how she had been raised, and that was the role she accepted.

Decades slipped by, and she grew accustomed to this way of life. It was almost surprising, maybe even a little frightening, how easily a person could adapt to something when enough time had passed. She had molded herself around his expectations until the shape felt almost natural, even when it did not always fit who she truly was.

Wu Meixiu shook her head. If she continued down this line of thought, it would only dig up old hurts and regrets she had long since learned to live with. And she didn't want to do that in front of her grandson and his friend.

Luo Yan, unaware of Wu Meixiu's inner thoughts, felt a wave of relief and happiness at her words. It meant she was not like many others of her generation who viewed same-sex attraction as a sin or, even worse, some kind of illness.

Most of all, he was glad that Shen Ji Yun would not have to worry about his grandmother rejecting him for being in a relationship with Luo Yan. Especially since the two of them seemed genuinely close. He did not want Shen Ji Yun to go through the pain of being pushed away by a loved one for a second time.
