Chapter 1289 1289: MORNING AT THE BAI MANSION
LUO YAN checked his clothes and hair as he looked at the full body mirror. He wore a light grey crewneck sweatshirt in a soft, brushed fabric, layered over a simple white t-shirt that peeked out at the collar. His dark jeans were a clean, straight-leg cut that fit his lean frame well, ending just above his ankles. On his feet were a pair of minimalist white leather sneakers. His black hair was styled with a subtle, textured look, pushed back from his forehead with a light hold product, showing off the clean lines of his face.
He tilted his head a little, a satisfied smile spreading across his face as he looked at his reflection. "Ah, I really am too beautiful."
Today was his first day of his second university life. So, he had made sure he was fully groomed and looked his best. He wasn't really all that excited about going to college for a second time, if he was honest. But he had convinced himself he would try to enjoy it this time around. Since he didn't have to worry about money or a lot of other problems like before, he had decided to just try and experience a more carefree student life.
Of course, that didn't mean he would just neglect his grades. He still planned to take his classes seriously. He wanted to graduate on time, and if he could manage it, he would try to graduate with honors.
Luo Yan picked up his backpack and walked out of his room in the Bai family mansion. After military training ended, he had packed his things from the university dorms and moved in here. His family had already agreed that this would be his home while he attended university. The mansion was not very far from T University, only about a ten-minute drive away. That was, of course, not counting any traffic on the road.
His roommate, Zhen Yihan, had made a whole dramatic scene when he found out Luo Yan wouldn't be living in the dorms. He complained they hadn't even done many typical roommate things yet and Luo Yan was already leaving. And since they were in different majors, he worried they might not see each other much at all. Luo Yan had to spend a good twenty minutes reassuring him. He promised they could meet up for lunch or hang out whenever they were both free, and that he would still keep his dorm bed and use the room to take naps between classes.
After he walked out of his room, he went straight down the hall to his grandfather's room. The male nurse opened the door for him with a small smile. Inside, the room was dim and still. Luo Yan saw his grandfather lying in the large bed, eyes closed, his breathing even and deep in sleep.
The old man looked more fragile than Luo Yan remembered, the blanket seeming to swallow his thin frame. His face appeared sharper, the skin more drawn against his bones. A tight, painful squeeze clenched in Luo Yan's chest as he looked at him. He tried not to let the thought form fully, but a cold understanding settled in his gut. A feeling that days like this, with his grandfather simply sleeping peacefully, were numbered. Luo Yan pushed the heavy feeling away firmly, refusing to let it take root.
Luo Yan walked quietly to the side of the large bed. He leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to the top of his grandfather's thin, white hair. He straightened up and looked at the sleeping face for a moment longer. "I'm going to school now, Grandpa. I'll see you later."
He turned around and offered the nurse a small, polite smile. Then he walked out of the room, closing the door softly behind him.
He continued to the main dining area. When he walked in, he saw that all the members of the Bai family were already sitting around the large table.
Luo Yan offered a bright, friendly smile to the room. "Good morning, everyone!" he said as he walked to his usual seat. "Sorry, did I make you all wait for me?"
Sun Xiulan, his aunt, smiled back at him warmly from her seat beside his uncle. "No, not at all. You're perfectly on time."
His little cousin, Bai Ye, who was now six years old, looked up at him and pouted. "How come Yan Yan looks even taller than before?" the boy asked, his small face serious. "You can't get any taller anymore, Yan Yan. If you get too tall, you won't be pretty anymore."
Luo Yan chuckled softly. Ever since he had hit his late growth spurt, Bai Ye had pouted every single time he looked at him. It was like Luo Yan had stolen away his favorite 'pretty Yan Yan' just by growing a few more inches taller.
"Xiao Ye, don't speak to your older brother like that," Uncle Chen said from his seat at the head of the table, gently scolding his youngest son. "And please, remember to address him properly as 'Brother Yan'."
A deep frown appeared on Bai Ye's cute, round face. Seeing it, Luo Yan quickly spoke up before the boy could get upset. "It's really fine, Uncle. I honestly don't mind if Xiao Ye calls me Yan Yan. I like it."
From across the table, his older cousin Bai Ze let out a soft tsk. "Don't spoil him too much, Xiao Yan. That's exactly why he's becoming a little brat."
"I'm not a brat!" Bai Ye said angrily, glaring at his older brother from his high chair.
Bai Ze just smirked, clearly enjoying riling up his little brother. "Only a true brat would shout that he isn't a brat."
"Enough, both of you," Sun Xiulan said in a firm voice. "Xiao Ye, don't shout at the table. It's not polite. And Bai Ze, you are twenty-two. Stop deliberately teasing your six-year-old brother. It's childish." She gave each of her sons a pointed look before her expression softened. "Now, let's eat our breakfast before it gets cold."
As he started eating his breakfast, Luo Yan's mind drifted to Shen Ji Yun. He wondered if there had been any news or reaction from the Shen family after what happened at the shooting range two days ago.
