Chapter 103 Part 2 – Dr. Ning’s Here! (II)
Chapter 103 Part 2 – Dr. Ning’s Here! (II)
Xia Chuan had already scooped up Xiao Feng and pulled Xia Mian behind him, shielding them. “We told you, we don’t know where my second aunt’s family is! Ma Wenwu got humiliated by us and is using you like pawns. Are you guys stupid?”
As soon as he spoke, several relatives and neighbors stepped forward.
“Two grown men bullying a girl? What the hell is that?”
“Scram! We don’t know anything about Second Mao. Don’t come back here again.”
The Mao brothers realized this wasn’t going to work and were preparing to leave with Mao Huihe.
But Mao Huihe seemed to see this as her last hope and began struggling violently. “No! She knows! She has to know where Mao Huimei is! I have to find her!”
Xia Chuan said coldly, “If you want to divorce that pomade guy, find your own way. What’s the point of dragging Sister Huimei into this? He doesn’t even remember who she is anymore.”
“No—he remembers! He has to remember!” Mao Huihe was clearly mentally unstable now. She flailed toward Xia Mian. “He only started hitting me because Mao Huimei ran away! He likes her! If she comes back, he’ll marry her, and it’ll all be okay!”
That made the Xia relatives furious.
Xia Chuan snapped, “This is your Mao family’s own damn mess! It was your dad, your mom, and your grandma who sold you to Hao! If you’ve got the guts, go confront them! What are you harassing us for?!”
But Mao Huihe didn’t care. She kept trying to grab Xia Mian and shouted at her father, “Dad, grab her! If we follow her, we’ll find them! Mao Huimei definitely went with her!”
“Ma Wenwu said so! Hold her here! If Mao Huimei doesn’t come back, she’s not going to Yan City! She’s not taking that college entrance exam!”
At those words, Xia Mian’s eyes narrowed slightly. Ma Wenwu had never once considered that she would go to college. In his and his parents’ worldview, girls finished high school and got married. The idea of a girl attending college didn’t even exist.
The only one in the family who knew she was preparing for college… was Ma Lili.
Xia Mian sneered inwardly. Ma Lili hated her family, hated her younger brother, yet everything she did reeked of their influence: selfish, vicious, and toxic.
Eldest Mao, hearing Mao Huihe’s words, clearly began to waver. The Hao family had terrified them thoroughly. And though he’d always looked down on Mao Huihe, she was still his daughter. Seeing what she’d endured, even he couldn’t bear it anymore.
If Mao Zhishan came back and took the heat from the Hao family, maybe they could all be free again…
Just as he was scheming, someone suddenly said, “Hey, isn’t that Hao Xufeng’s car? Wasn’t he off in the neighboring county messing with some girl? Why’s he back now?”
The moment Mao Huihe heard Hao Xufeng’s name, she flinched violently as if hearing something terrifying. She grabbed Eldest Mao and bolted. “He—he’s here! We need to run—run now!”
The Mao brothers clearly knew they’d be in big trouble if Hao caught them here. They immediately helped Mao Huihe and left in a hurry.
Xia Chuan gave a thumbs-up to the young man who had spoken. “Nice move!”
The guy scratched his head. “What move?”
Xia Chuan said, “Using Pomade Hao to scare them off.”
The young man replied, “I wasn’t bluffing!”
“Huh?” Xia Chuan followed his gaze—and sure enough, there was Hao Xufeng’s car. “Oh, damn… he really is here.”
Just when everyone thought the car was simply passing by, it came to a stop right in front of them.
The back door opened first, and Ma Wenwu jumped out. He pointed at Xia Mian and shouted, “Bro, it’s her! She definitely knows where Mao Huimei is. Oh, and she even badmouthed you, called you Pomade Hao.”
Doesn’t seem like a chance encounter. Xia Mian thought silently. This guy Ma Wenwu really amounted to nothing—trying to use this Pomade Hao to deal with me?
Then again, for Hao Xufeng to show up on his behalf meant that Ma Lili’s relationship with him—at least on the surface—was pretty solid.
Xia Mian looked toward Xia Chuan. After the heartbreak, his IQ seemed to have returned online. He clearly realized the same thing and stared grimly at the car in front of them.
The driver’s door opened, and a young man of average height got out. His appearance was plain, his body already showing signs of flab, his eyes dull, his steps unsteady—clearly worn out by excess indulgence.
His hair was slicked back with what looked like half a bottle of pomade. On the God of Gamblers’ lead actor, it might give off a commanding aura. On him, it just screamed “Pomade Hao.”
Xia Mian spotted Ma Lili in the passenger seat. Xia Chuan instinctively called out, “Lili.”
Ma Wenwu immediately puffed up. “Hey! Who are you calling? My sister’s got nothing to do with you anymore!”
“She’s gonna be a big star! Stop dreaming about the swan, you ugly toad!”
Ma Lili stepped out of the car. She wore a polka-dot blouse and jeans, looking rather fresh and youthful. But when facing Xia Chuan, her expression was cold and distant. “I’ve said everything that needs to be said. Since you look down on me, I’ll walk my own path from now on. Don’t come pestering me anymore.”
Xia Chuan gritted his teeth. “Don’t act so noble. You only came to me to use me as a stepping stone to Yan City. Now that you can’t get there through me, you jump straight to Hao Xufeng?”
“No—must’ve planned that long ago, huh?”
Hao Xufeng didn’t care one bit. He enjoyed fooling around, and stealing women from other men made it all the more exciting.
Ma Lili looked deeply insulted. “Don’t talk nonsense! You’re the one who lacks ambition. We were never on the same path!”
Looking at her now, Xia Chuan suddenly felt arguing was pointless. But still, he couldn’t help but snort, “No wonder when I broke up with you, my whole family celebrated. Guess I’ll go throw myself a party too—thanks for thinking I’m not good enough.”
Ma Lili’s face went cold as she clenched her teeth.
Ma Wenwu shouted, “Stop being bitter just ’cause you can’t have her! My sister’s going to be a big star and marry a rich guy. Go cry about it!”
Then he egged on Hao Xufeng, who had been staring at Xia Mian. “Bro, she’s the one! Mao Huimei definitely left with her. Just hold her here, and Mao Huimei’s sure to come back!”
Xia Chuan roared, “Ma Wenwu!” They weren’t afraid of the Mao family, but the Hao family held real power in this small county. If Hao Xufeng really tried to detain Xia Mian, it could get ugly—at the very least, no bus driver in town would dare help her escape for fear of offending the Haos.
But before Hao Xufeng could even react, Xia Mian had already stepped forward, grabbed Ma Wenwu by the collar, and swung a punch straight into his face.
Ma Wenwu was so stunned he couldn’t react for a while. Without even giving him time to scream, Xia Mian tripped him and slammed him to the ground, then began punching his face again and again. This wasn’t like the “gentle” stone-throwing before—these punches were real, full of force.
After just two blows, Ma Wenwu’s face was already covered in blood. He finally came to his senses and screamed, “Help! She’s killing me! AHHH—”
Hao Xufeng was caught off guard. Xia Chuan quickly stepped in front of the bystanders, who instinctively wanted to intervene. But then the crowd paused, realized what was happening, and began to cheer.
“Nice one!”
“Give it to him, girl!”
“Damn, Chuan boy, your lil’ cousin got some fire!”
“Go on it! Don’t let anyone take advantage of you, girl!”
Only Ma Lili was jumping anxiously on the side. “Xia Mian, what are you doing?! Let go of him!”
“Xia Chuan! Make her stop!”
Xia Chuan sneered, “Be grateful I’m not helping her beat him.” As he spoke, he stepped forward and gave Ma Wenwu a solid kick.
“Xia Chuan!” Ma Lili screamed, but didn’t dare say more. All she could do was stomp her feet in frustration.
It wasn’t until Ma Wenwu spat out bloody teeth that Xia Mian disdainfully wiped her hands on his clothes, stood up slowly, adjusted her shirt, and said lazily, “I told you twice already—don’t come near me, or I’ll beat you every time I see you.”
“Since you can’t understand human language, let this be a lesson.”
Ma Wenwu lay stunned for a while, then started wailing and rolling on the ground, his face covered in blood. Not long after, he began cursing Ma Lili—blaming her for not protecting him, threatening to tell their parents, and so on.
He probably wanted to curse Xia Mian, but didn’t dare, so he took it out on his sister instead.
The bystanders were all speechless. Even Ma Lili’s face turned cold, and she stopped caring about him.
Xia Mian turned to Hao Xufeng and said flatly, “I don’t know anything about Mao Huimei. You aren’t going to let Ma Wenwu use you as a pawn too, did you?”
“No,” Hao Xufeng clapped his hands, face full of admiration. “I’m just surprised our county has a girl like you—perfect for playing a heroine. I’ll introduce you to the director I know. You can be the lead actress.”
Ma Lili’s face changed slightly. “Brother Hao…”
Xia Mian curled her lips, too lazy to mock him, and simply said, “No thanks. I’m still in school and just want to focus on studying. I don’t like acting, and I don’t want to be a celebrity.”
Just as she finished speaking, her phone rang in her pocket. When she saw the caller ID, her whole face lit up instantly. She pressed the answer button. “Hello? Dr. Ning, where are you now?”
Hao Xufeng’s murky eyes instantly latched onto her glowing face, and he instinctively started to follow.
Ma Lili quickly grabbed his arm. “Brother Hao, be careful. That girl hits people.”
“Didn’t we still have things to do? Let your boys clean this up. Let’s go—I’m hungry.”
Hao Xufeng suddenly grinned. “Right, she does hit people.” He glanced at Xia Chuan and added, “Better call a few guys then.”
He pulled out his phone and began dialing. Then he said half-heartedly to Ma Lili, “I won’t take you to eat today. If you’re busy, go ahead. I’ll find you another time.”
Ma Lili’s face went pale with rage. Her gaze fell on Xia Mian’s phone, and a surge of jealousy rose in her heart.
Why?! She’s just an orphan, living off others—how could she have a mobile phone?!
Just because she had the luck to save a rich guy?!
Ma Lili clenched her fists tightly, then suddenly relaxed when she saw Hao Xufeng’s leering gaze on Xia Mian. Let’s see—when faced with someone like him, what good was being a smart student?
If Hao Xufeng trapped Xia Mian here in this little county, would she still be able to go to college?
Xia Mian had no idea what the two behind her were thinking. All she could think now was: Dr. Ning’s finally here! Hahaha!
She was holding Xiao Feng’s hand, looking toward the bus station, trying to guess which car Ning Shaobai was in.
Then she noticed a few people surrounding her.
Standing beside her, Xia Chuan also noticed Hao Xufeng again. Just now, he thought Hao had left with Ma Lili, but seeing him step forward now, Xia Chuan’s face darkened. “Hao Xufeng, what are you doing?”
“Nothing,” Hao Xufeng blocked Xia Mian’s path and stared at her, his gaze indecent. “Just found a perfect new actress. I want to invite her to star in a movie.”
As he spoke, he reached out toward Xia Mian.
Xia Mian narrowed her eyes, just about to strike—
When suddenly, a roar of an engine tore through the air. A black sedan charged toward them, screeching to a stop just inches from Hao Xufeng.
Hao Xufeng was so startled he froze on the spot, then staggered back a step as the men he brought rushed to check on him in panic.
Just as he was recovering, flushed with rage, he rolled up his sleeves and charged toward the car, yelling, “Are you fucking crazy?! Get out of here! If I don’t beat you to death, my surname isn’t Hao!”
But just as he reached the driver’s side, the door suddenly burst open with a loud bang, slamming straight into Hao Xufeng’s face. The impact knocked him off his feet—he staggered back a few steps before collapsing to the ground.
A red bruise immediately spread across his forehead, and blood gushed from his nose. Clearly, the arrogant local tyrant had never experienced anything like this. He looked completely dazed, as if he hadn’t even processed what had just happened.
“Boss!”
“Big bro!”
His lackeys scrambled forward in a panic to help him up.
Xia Mian, however, didn’t spare them a single glance. Her eyes were fixed only on the calm, elegant man stepping out of the car.
“Dr. Ning!” she called out.
The moment Ning Shaobai’s gaze landed on her, a radiant smile suddenly lit up his face.
