Hao Jian’s face turned ashen with rage. He shouted, “She’s just one damn girl! Everyone, get her!”
But no one moved.
These people had only followed Hao Jian for money. There was no loyalty here. And they weren’t stupid either—this girl had just taken out a whole group of them without even breaking a sweat. It was clear they didn’t stand a chance.
Most of them, seeing the tide turning, pretended to still be too injured to stand and lay groaning on the ground for show.
No one dared step forward. Seeing their cowardice, Xia Mian clicked her tongue in disdain and walked toward Hao Jian, one step at a time.
Hao Jian retreated. The same beautiful, slender legs he had once lusted after now seemed to carry a deadly curse. Her steps were slow, even casual, yet somehow she got closer and closer.
She finally stopped right in front of him and said with a smile, “What, backing down already? I thought you had more fight in you.” Her eyes sharpened suddenly, though her tone was soft. “Want to know what’s going to happen to you today?”
The oppressive air weighed down like a mountain. Cornered, Hao Jian suddenly shouted, “F*** you!”
He raised the iron rod to strike.
But just as he lifted his arm, an excruciating pain exploded from a certain unspeakable place on his body, sharp as if a barbed arrow had been driven into flesh and twisted through his nerves. His whole body went numb, as if his soul had temporarily left his body.
Every guy watching instinctively clenched his legs.
Zhao Cheng shuddered. “Holy sh*t… that was brutal.”
Hao Jian finally realized what had happened, cupping himself and collapsing to his knees with a broken scream.
Xia Mian lowered her leg calmly and said to the others, “Go grab the DV and camera!”
The two thugs holding the equipment immediately turned to flee, but Xia Mian raised her hand and hurled the wooden stick. It smacked one of them square in the back.
The guy stumbled, and Xia Mian’s clear voice rang out like a devil’s whisper: “Be smart and hand it over… or do you want me to come get it?”
Zhao Cheng and Han Haoyan had already cut off their escape route.
The two with the gear clearly weren’t fighters—they were probably the “tech team.” Zhao Cheng and Han Haoyan easily overpowered them and snatched the devices.
The two started checking through the footage. Digital technology was still quite a novelty nowadays, so the price of memory cards wasn’t cheap. Most probably, there weren’t that many copies of whatever photos and videos they’d taken.
As the boys scrolled through the footage, their faces turned darker and darker. Zhao Cheng scowled and cursed, “F*ck! Can we beat this scum to death?”
Xia Mian reached out her hand. Zhao Cheng said, “Better not look. It’s disgusting.”
“I’m fine,” Xia Mian said. “I have to see it. That way I’ll know how long he’ll stay behind bars.”
Zhao Cheng hesitated but handed her the DV in the end.
Xia Mian watched in silence—young girls sobbing, collapsing, struggling…
She closed her eyes for a moment. The memory card’s capacity was limited, so this was likely just part of the full picture, but it was more than enough to know the atrocities Hao Jian had committed.
“Keep this safe. It’s key evidence,” Xia Mian said coldly, handing the device back to Zhao Cheng. “We must make sure that bastard never sees a day outside the bar again.”
Zhao Cheng had just taken the equipment back when Xia Mian suddenly spun and kicked Hao Jian hard in the stomach.
The blow was so brutal that he couldn’t even scream. But Xia Mian wasn’t done. She picked up the iron rod lying next to him and struck—his shoulder, back, thigh…
Crack.
It really sounded like bones were breaking.
Hao Jian’s cries turned to gasps for air. Then to begging. “S-Sorry… please, please, I’ll never do it again…”
“Xia Mian—Xia Mian, I beg you, stop!”
Xia Mian didn’t say a word and just kept striking the parts that hurt the most. The cold fury in her silence was so terrifying that the remaining thugs around them stopped breathing altogether.
Finally, it was Li Lizhen who spoke, “Xia Mian, careful—it’s not worth it if something happens to you because of him.”
The sound of police sirens drew closer. Xia Mian’s final act was to stomp her foot down squarely on Hao Jian’s face. Her expression didn’t change as she said coldly, “Didn’t you think you were cool? Then enjoy your prison life.”
Though her friends knew Xia Mian liked to let the police handle things, they were still stunned. “You called the cops?”
Xia Mian glanced at Hao Jian, whose eyes were now filled with fear, and smiled. “I didn’t have my Walkman today, but did you forget? I’ve got a mobile phone.”
Li Lizhen said, “So the cops are here for them?”
The moment the thugs on the ground heard that the police were coming, they panicked. Despite being sprawled out moments before, they scrambled to their feet and started running in all directions.
Xia Mian shouted, “Stop them! Don’t let a single one get away!”
“Didn’t you think he was cool? Why run? Go to jail with him! Maybe you’ll all come out just as cool.”
Still, they were outnumbered, and the others were desperate to escape. A few actually managed to climb over the wall.
Xia Mian shoved the DV and camera into Li Lizhen’s arms.
Then everyone watched in shock as the girl who had adamantly refused to climb the wall earlier suddenly sprinted, planted a foot on the wall, and in one smooth leap, vaulted onto the nearly two-meter-high barrier. Standing tall, her presence fierce and commanding, she kicked down the thugs who had almost made it over, one by one.
The knot she had tied at her thigh finally loosened from the motion, and the long skirt dropped and fluttered down in the summer evening breeze. In this violent scene, it looked so out of place—and yet, impossibly beautiful.
Ear-Piercing Girl muttered, “If I were a guy, I’d definitely fall for her…”
Sun Yuexin shot back, “You wouldn’t even get a chance.”
Fan Xiaoman stared blankly at the girl. Suddenly, a strong sense of inferiority washed over her.
The “toughness” she had once been proud of… Xia Mian probably saw it as childish and naïve.
The real coolness was right before her eyes.
…
The police station lobby was packed with dozens of people.
The officer taking statements from the thugs was fuming. “So you’re telling me the girl in a skirt did all this to you?”
He slammed the desk in anger and glanced across the room—Fan Xiaoman and her gang, the bruised-up thugs, Zhao Cheng and Han Haoyan—and finally, his eyes landed on Xia Mian, who was sitting primly in her long dress, hands folded on her lap.
He roared at the thugs, “You couldn’t even make up a better lie? Still trying to frame the victim?!”
Xia Mian gave a startled little flinch, then spoke up gently, “Uncle Officer, it was me who beat up Hao Jian. He said he wanted to take nude photos of me… and… do things to us. I—I was terrified! I panicked and grabbed his iron rod… then everything went blank. I don’t even remember what happened after that…”
By the end, her voice was trembling.
The officer’s tone instantly softened, dropping several octaves. “It’s okay, it’s okay. That’s called justified self-defense. You did the right thing.”
The video and photo evidence were irrefutable. The officers—many of them fathers, brothers—were furious after seeing what those animals had done to so many girls.
“These people helped me,” Xia Mian continued. “These are my friends from Affiliated High. And the others from No. 14… they look like delinquents, but they only stepped in because they heard what Hao Jian was planning.”
“Otherwise, two boys alone couldn’t possibly have handled that many people.”
Everyone else stared at her silently.
What good acting!
The officer nodded. “Got it. Did you call your family? Have them come pick you up.” He added gently, “Go home, get some rest. It’s over now. You were very brave today.”
Sun Yuexin and the others from Affiliated High received the same kind treatment—some even had a policewoman bring them water to calm their nerves.
But Fan Xiaoman and her group… it was their first time in a police station, and they were the ones who actually needed emotional support. Instead, they got the opposite. If not for Xia Mian speaking up on their behalf, the police would’ve lumped them in as Hao Jian’s accomplices.
Even so, they were clearly shaken after getting chewed out by the officers. Especially since Xia Mian’s group was already calling their families to come pick them up, while they had to stay for another round of questioning—all because of their past records.
Xia Mian looked at them and said with deep sincerity, “See? I told you. If you study hard, you can walk into any place with your head held high—even a police station.”
Sun Yuexin added the final blow, “Didn’t I say? When you’re good at school and at fighting, even the cops praise you. Believe it now?”
Fan Xiaoman and her gang: “…”
“Xia Mian, your brother is here!”
“Sun Yuexin, Li Lizhen, your parents are here to pick you up!”
Watching their cheerful backs as they left the station, Ear-Piercing Girl couldn’t help gritting her teeth. “Why do my hands suddenly itch so bad?”
Her ponytailed friend replied blankly, “First of all, you’d have to be able to hit them.”
Ear-Piercing Girl fell silent.
But there was envy in their eyes.
Xia Mian and the others were being picked up happily by their families, while they…
Even though they’d actually tried to save people today, no one back home would believe them.
…
Ning Shaobai looked Xia Mian over carefully. Even though he’d been sure she was fine, he still couldn’t help double-checking.
Once he was certain she was okay, he tugged gently at her tuft and chuckled, “Am I going to become a regular at the police station from now on?”
Xia Mian covered her eyes helplessly. “You really can’t blame me for this.”
“Can’t I? Of course I can,” Ning Shaobai sighed. “Blame it on your looks. If being beautiful were a crime, then you’d be sentenced.”
The tone, the look on his face—it all reminded Xia Mian of the last time he picked her up from the station.
And what had he replied back then? Expression deadpan, Xia Mian said, “What, you gonna give me the death sentence again?”
Ning Shaobai couldn’t help laughing. “No way. If you die, what would I do? I think… a life sentence sounds better.”
Then he turned and gave her a teasing smile. “With me as the one overseeing it.”
For some reason, Xia Mian suddenly thought of a kinky roleplay: prison guard and inmate, or something like that…
She immediately yelled, “What the hell are you thinking?!”
Ning Shaobai blinked, confused at her suddenly flushed face. “Uh… what?”
Seeing the innocent look in his eyes, Xia Mian realized—
The one with the dirty mind… was her.
Although Dr. Ning was a bit of a flirt, his heart was far more pure than hers….
Xia Mian, embarrassed and annoyed, buried her face in her hands. What a clown I am!
Ning Shaobai, experiencing his first relationship in an age where information was limited, really was more innocent than her in this area.
Not understanding what he’d done wrong, he worried he’d upset her and quickly apologized. “Sorry… I must’ve said something inappropriate…”
“No, no no—it’s me.” Xia Mian kept her face hidden. “Dr. Ning, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have snapped at you.”
Seeing him still looking like he wanted to question her further, she quickly changed the subject. “What’s Xiao Feng doing at home today?”
Ning Shaobai replied, “I don’t know. I came straight here after getting the call from the station—I haven’t even been home yet.”
“You’re back at work?” Xia Mian blinked. Then, she clutched her face again—damn, Ning Shaobai had just been on leave. Of course he had to go back to work!
So what exactly had she been hiding from all day? Loneliness?
No, not lonely. Today was very eventful.
Her little angel image… was thoroughly ruined.
This time, Ning Shaobai finally figured out what she was thinking and couldn’t help but laugh. “Just stay put at home for a while. I won’t disturb your studying anymore.”
Xia Mian scoffed. “Even if you wanted to, you can’t. Next time you’re on leave, I’ll already be back in school!”
Ning Shaobai: “…”
Right. He forgot she was only on summer break. School was starting again.
Now it was Xia Mian’s turn to laugh triumphantly.
Ning Shaobai watched her smiling face, eyes full of affection.
