Chapter 133 Part 2 – Xiao Feng Got Into a Fight at School (II)

When Mao Huimei told Xia Mian that Fang Yongpeng had resigned, Xia Mian wasn’t even surprised.

During the summer, Xia Mian could still help a bit, but after school started, everything fell to Mao Huimei alone. In just a month, she had noticeably lost weight, and soon she was mentioning Fang Yongpeng in nearly every conversation.

Fang Yongpeng not only shouldered the bulk of the workload himself, but he also made a point of regularly reminding Mao Huimei to eat on time…

“Looks like you’re off the hook from Second Aunt’s nagging this year.” Xia Mian teased, “Well… maybe not completely. She’ll probably move on to your marriage next.”

Mao Huimei blushed faintly. “He hasn’t even confessed yet. What’s the rush?”

“If he hasn’t confessed,” she added with a huff, “I’m not bringing him home.”

“He quit his iron rice bowl job

1 for you and he still hasn’t confessed?!” Xia Mian was shocked.

Fang Yongpeng used to be a high school teacher. These days, having a stable government job is incredibly rare and desirable. And this was during the most difficult and uncertain stage of the beverage factory. Xia Mian knew things would get better eventually, but Fang Yongpeng didn’t have that certainty.

His sacrifice was no small thing.

“How many Dr. Nings do you think there are in this world?” Mao Huimei laughed. “He confessed a whole year early.”

“Exactly! My Dr. Ning is one of a kind,” Xia Mian agreed. She lifted her chin proudly.

Mao Huimei chuckled.

“That He Wei hasn’t been bothering you lately, right?”

“Nope. Seems like something happened with Lu Nana—he’s too busy now.”

Xia Mian was taken aback. “What happened?”

“I heard she’s pregnant and is forcing her family to let her marry Qi Kai.”

Xia Mian immediately understood what that meant. “That Qi Kai really stops at nothing.”

Lu Nana might be blinded by love, but her father wasn’t stupid—he wouldn’t be able to manage such a big business otherwise. Even if He Wei said he didn’t care anymore, he and Lu Nana had been close for years, so he went directly to her father to play the recording. As a result, there was no way the Lu family would agree to the marriage.

But no one expected Qi Kai to pull such a dirty trick.

In this era, even spending the night together before marriage was considered improper, let alone getting pregnant out of wedlock.

If he truly cared about Lu Nana, he wouldn’t let her face that kind of public shame.

“So they’re getting married for real?”

Mao Huimei gave a casual shrug. “No idea. Just overheard some talk.”

Xia Mian let out a sigh, slowly shaking her head.

While they were still talking, a knock sounded at the front door, followed by Ning Shaobai’s voice: “Mianmian.”

Mao Huimei stifled a laugh. “Your Dr. Ning’s off work—go on, quick.”

After finalizing the renovation plans for their house, construction began in late summer. In the meantime, Xia Mian and Xiao Feng were staying with the Mao family. The Mao family was all daughters, so whenever Xia Wenyue and Mao Zhishan were away, Ning Shaobai never stepped into the yard uninvited; he always called out to Xia Mian from the gate.

Hearing his voice, Xia Mian immediately stood up in excitement. They hadn’t seen each other for days!

Her first semester at university had already been underway for over a month. First and second-year students were required to live on campus, with nightly dorm inspections, and were only allowed to go home on weekends. Though Ning Shaobai sometimes dropped by after work, it wasn’t the same as being together every day.

The moment Xia Mian spotted the tall, lean figure, she dashed over and threw herself into his arms. “Dr. Ning!”

Ning Shaobai laughed as he caught her, gently rubbing his chin against the top of her head. Just as he opened his mouth to say something, his phone buzzed in his pocket.

Still holding her close with one arm, he fished the device out with the other. When he saw the caller ID, he gave her a pat on the back. “It’s the school.”

Xia Mian quickly stood straight, anxious. “What happened?”

Since her semester started, Xiao Feng had basically been under Ning Shaobai’s care. Nearly eight years old already, he had developed a sense of gender. The Mao household was full of girls, so he preferred to stay with Ning Shaobai.

When Xia Mian wasn’t home, the boy sometimes stayed with Chenchen, but most of the time he lived at Ning Shaobai’s place.

So for convenience, the emergency contact number they gave his school was also Ning Shaobai’s.

Back when they were filling out the forms, Xia Mian had written down his number without hesitation, prompting Ning Shaobai to laugh, “Second child should be less trouble than our eldest here, huh?”

Now it seemed… not by much.

“Let’s go.” After hanging up, Ning Shaobai took Xia Mian’s hand and walked out. “They said he got into a fight at school.”

“Is he hurt?” Xia Mian panicked. “Is he okay?”

“How did Xiao Feng end up in a fight?”

Mao Huizhu and Chenchen had gotten into fights once or twice before, prompting the school to have their parents called in, but Xiao Feng had never been in trouble like that.

That child had such a gentle nature. If something had pushed him to fight, it couldn’t be something small, so Xia Mian was beside herself with worry.

Ning Shaobai knew she was panicking and gently patted her head. “Calm down. Chenchen and Huizhu were with him.”

“Xiao Feng might not be one for fighting, but three years of martial arts training isn’t for nothing. Normal kids wouldn’t be able to lay a hand on him.”

Even as he spoke, he was already speeding like mad, and in under five minutes, they reached the school.

The two headed straight to the Grade 3 teacher’s office. It was dismissal time, and most teachers were packing up to leave. Only Ms. Liu from Class 3-1 was still there, along with over a dozen kids.

Chenchen, Huizhu, and Xiao Feng stood upright, clearly unhurt. Beside Xiao Feng, however, was a small girl who looked utterly wrecked—hair in a wild tangle, school uniform wrinkled and half-off, her face blotched with dark purple bruises. She was staring down the seven or eight boys across the room, her eyes sharp and wild, like a cornered wolf pup ready to bite.

The boys didn’t look quite as beat-up as her, but they’d clearly taken a hit—one holding his stomach, another clutching his arm. One boy had bloody scratch marks on his hand, clearly Mao Huizhu’s handiwork.

As for any facial injuries? Definitely not from their side. These three had been taught never to hit faces.

Xiao Feng kept glancing at the little girl beside him, then shyly reached out and offered her a piece of milk candy.

The girl glanced at it once, then turned her head away coldly. That earned her immediate glares from Chenchen and Huizhu.

The moment the children saw them walk in, their faces lit up.

“Auntie!”

“Sister Mian!”

“Uncle!”
