Extra 5 Part 1 – Chuunibyou Phase (I)

Morning sunlight filtered through a gap in the curtains and fell across the two people nestled closely together in bed, still fast asleep. The first signs of movement came from the crib beside them. A chubby little girl, about a year old, pushed herself up onto her bottom and peeked toward the bed. Instead of crying or fussing, she stealthily climbed over the crib rail and quietly landed on the carved mahogany bed where her parents slept.

She crawled forward a couple of steps in silence. After confirming that both adults still had their eyes closed, she carefully lifted one corner of the blanket. The moment she spotted her food supply, her eyes lit up. Excitedly flapping her tiny hands, she hurriedly tugged up her mother’s shirt and pounced like a hungry little tiger, successfully latching on.

Her movements woke Xia Mian. Sleepily opening her eyes, she heard a soft chuckle above her.

“That little rascal caught another opportunity.”

Xia Mian looked down and saw that the little girl seemed to know they were talking about her. She suckled contentedly, her eyes narrowing with smug satisfaction, while her tiny feet rhythmically kicked at Ning Shaobai’s arm wrapped around Xia Mian’s waist.

This was their daughter, Nuonuo. She was almost a year old now. Xia Mian had been gradually weaning her, and during the daytime she hardly let her nurse anymore. As a result, the little girl was always looking for every possible opening, constantly trying to outsmart her mother.

Feeling the soft little feet against his arm, Ning Shaobai couldn’t stop smiling. He raised his arm, intending to scoop the little girl into his embrace as well. Unexpectedly, the baby instantly became wary. With a loud smack, she slapped one hand protectively over her mother’s other breast while sucking even faster.

“Ow…” Xia Mian winced as she was bitten. She gave the little girl a light pat on the bottom. “If you bite again, I’ll keep it away from you!”

The little girl immediately loosened her mouth. She flashed Xia Mian a flattering smile, then resumed nursing much more gently.

Ning Shaobai reached out and stroked her soft, tender cheek. “This little one is getting far too clever.”

As if she understood she was being praised, Nuonuo turned to Ning Shaobai and gave him an especially sweet smile. Her eyes, identical to Xia Mian’s, practically melted his heart.

“How can you be this adorable, hmm?”

Xia Mian laughed. “If she’s so adorable, then she’s your responsibility.”

After letting her daughter sucking for a little while longer, Xia Mian sat up and handed the little girl over to Ning Shaobai.

Nuonuo immediately kicked her little legs in protest and stretched out her tiny arms toward her. “Mommy! Mommy!”

Her clear, babyish voice was full of pleading and grievances that Xia Mian found it hard to resist, so she hurriedly got out of bed and left the room.

Ning Shaobai was even softer-hearted. Holding his daughter close, he coaxed gently, “Mommy’s gone to make Nuonuo some formula. Daddy will stay with Nuonuo while we wait, okay?”

Seeing that Xia Mian had already left, the little girl puffed out her lips. She wrapped both chubby arms around Ning Shaobai’s neck and rested her head softly against the crook of his neck, mumbling, “Daddy…”

Ning Shaobai practically wished he could pluck the moon from the sky for her.

“Nuonuo’s awake?” came the bright, gentle voice of a teenage boy through the slightly open door.

The little girl, who had been lying on Ning Shaobai’s shoulder, suddenly lifted her head. “Big Brother!”

Ning Shaobai laughed. “It is your big brother. You really like him that much?”

Nuonuo was already squirming to get down. Ning Shaobai set her down, and she expertly climbed off the bed. Wobbling across the carpet on unsteady little legs, she toddled toward the door while repeatedly calling out, “Big Brother! Big Brother!”

A knock sounded on the bedroom door. “Uncle?” Xiao Feng called from outside.

“Mm, come in.” Ning Shaobai stood protectively behind his daughter. “Open the door carefully. Nuonuo’s almost there.”

The wooden door opened just a crack. The little girl, still toddling uncertainly, tilted her head up. The moment she saw her big brother, she plopped down onto the floor, revealing her eight tiny baby teeth as she stretched both chubby arms toward the teenage boy outside, eagerly rocking her little body.

“Big Brother! Big Brother!”

Xiao Feng stepped inside, bent down, and picked her up. Gently patting her back, he said, “Nuonuo, you’re up so early.”

The fifteen-year-old boy had grown tall and slender, nearly as tall as Xia Mian now. The baby fat of childhood had disappeared, revealing refined, handsome features. His gentle, warm temperament made him especially popular with children.

As for the family’s little darling, aside from Mommy and Daddy, the person she loved most was Big Brother Xiao Feng. Sometimes, when she wasn’t asking to nurse, his place in her heart even surpassed Mommy’s.

Xia Mian returned carrying a bottle of formula. “You don’t have morning self-study today, don’t you? Why didn’t you sleep a little longer?”

The sports meet at Yan University Affiliated High School had begun, giving the kids three easy days.

“I’m used to waking up early,” Xiao Feng replied. “I couldn’t sleep anymore.”

He took the bottle from Xia Mian and fed it to Nuonuo. The little girl immediately relaxed against his shoulder, contentedly drinking her formula. Unable to resist, Xiao Feng kissed her soft little cheek.

“How are you so adorable, hmm?”

“It feels like you’ve grown again after just a few days apart.”

Last year, Xiao Feng, Chenchen, and Mao Huizhu had all been admitted to Yan University Affiliated High School. After entering their second year of high school, their studies became much more demanding. Between morning and evening self-study sessions and Xiao Feng’s many drawing assignments, their schedules no longer matched Nuonuo’s. So even though they lived under the same roof, they didn’t get to spend much time together.

Aunt Li finished setting the table and brought breakfast out, one dish after another. As Nuonuo drank her formula, she kept glancing at the food on the table, sucking harder and harder on her bottle.

Everyone burst into laughter. Aunt Li couldn’t resist teasing her. “There’s minced pork steamed egg custard—Nuonuo’s favorite.”

Nuonuo’s big eyes immediately curved into crescents. She let go of the now-empty bottle, handed it to Xia Mian, and kicked her little legs excitedly.

“Meat!”

Xia Mian wiped her face and hands with a warm towel, smiling as she said, “Look how chubby you’ve gotten, and you still want meat? Since you’ve already had your milk today, eat more vegetables.”

“Come here. Mommy will feed you.”

The little cuddle bug immediately leaned against Xiao Feng’s chest, swinging her little feet. Clutching his shirt with one tiny hand, she flashed her little baby teeth in a syrupy sweet smile, “Big Brother feed!”

The hands Xiao Feng had been about to loosen immediately tightened around her again. “Okay, Big Brother will feed you. We’ll let Nuonuo eat lots of meat, alright?”

Nuonuo happily scrunched up her nose, revealing all eight tiny baby teeth. After eating a spoonful of minced pork, she even shot Xia Mian a smug glance.

“Hey!” Xia Mian widened her eyes and turned to Ning Shaobai. “Is she provoking me?”

Laughing, Ning Shaobai pulled Xia Mian down into her seat and fed her a soup dumpling. She swallowed it in one bite before looking triumphantly at Nuonuo. “Hmph. I’m eating big meat!”

Her expression looked exactly like Nuonuo’s, Ning Shaobai couldn’t help laughing. “Stop teasing her,” he said. “If she starts making a fuss later, you’re the one who’ll have to calm her down.”

“I’ll do it. Our Nuonuo never makes a fuss.”

Just then, another cool-looking teenager strode in, heading straight for the baby in Xiao Feng’s arms.

Chenchen was now half a head taller than Xiao Feng. His handsome features had fully matured, gaining sharper contours than when he was younger. When he wasn’t speaking, his cool, distant expression resembled Ning Shaobai’s remarkably closely.

But all of that disappeared in front of the Ning family’s little princess. The cool demeanor melted instantly into tenderness as soon as he saw Nuonuo. Bending down with open arms, he said, “Come here, Nuonuo. Big Brother will hold you.”

Seeing Brother Chenchen made the little girl just as excited. She happily waved her little arms.

After taking her, Chenchen followed his usual routine of lifting her high into the air three times, eliciting nonstop giggles from Nuonuo.

Xia Mian handed a bowl of porridge to Xiao Feng. “Hurry up and eat.”

Then she asked Chenchen, “Have you eaten yet?”

Holding Nuonuo, Chenchen sat beside Xiao Feng. “I already have, Auntie. You all eat. I’ll feed Nuonuo…”

Taking the spoon from Xiao Feng, he scooped up some egg custard with minced pork. “Nuonuo, ahhh—time to eat your meat.”

Clearly, everyone knew exactly what she liked.

Nuonuo, however, wasn’t satisfied. Although she sat in Chenchen’s lap, she kept reaching toward Xiao Feng, whining softly and gesturing for Chenchen to hand the spoon back to him.

She wanted one big brother to hold her and the other to feed her. She intended to monopolize both of them at once, acting as spoiled and overbearing as could be.

Xia Mian sighed, “Don’t spoil her so much. Xiao Feng, hurry and eat. Did you pack your clothes? Bring your money?”

That morning was the opening ceremony for the school’s sports meet. Both Xiao Feng and Chenchen had been chosen as class placard bearers. Since placard bearers wore white dress shirts and black trousers, they needed to bring an extra change of clothes. During the sports meet, students finally had a chance to relax, so most of them carried some spending money to buy snacks and drinks.

Xiao Feng nodded. “I packed everything.”

Ning Shaobai added, “Bring your water bottle. Put a little salt in the water. It’s good to drink some salt water after intense exercise.”

Xiao Feng nodded again and got up to fill his bottle in the kitchen.

“Xiao Feng, bring extra! I won’t carry one.”

A crisp voice arrived together with an energetic figure rushing into the room.

It was Mao Huizhu.

The once-little girl had grown into a graceful young woman, one of the campus beauties at Yan University Affiliated High School. But the moment she opened her mouth, it was obvious her loud, lively personality hadn’t changed in the slightest.

Chenchen rolled his eyes at her. “Xiao Feng’s carrying enough stuff already. Why are you adding to it? Water’s heavy. Can’t you carry your own?”

“My backpack’s already full.”

Chenchen snorted at her bulging backpack. “It’s stuffed with snacks, isn’t it? Could you pack something actually useful for once?”

Ignoring him, Mao Huizhu looked at Xiao Feng’s backpack. “What did you pack? Why is it so full?”

“First-aid kit,” Xiao Feng replied as he came back from the kitchen. “At last year’s sports meet, there were too many people waiting for the school nurse. If I carry one myself, I can treat injuries right away. It’s more convenient.”

Seeing Xiao Feng return carrying two water bottles, Mao Huizhu immediately snatched them away and stuffed them into Chenchen’s backpack. “Thanks for your hard work!”

Chenchen glared at her. “Mao Huizhu, could you stop being such a shameless freeloader?”

“You’re a big, strong guy. Your backpack has the least stuff in it…”

“Ah!” Nuonuo suddenly cried out. Grabbing Chenchen’s hand, she opened her mouth and flailed anxiously.

Chenchen had gotten so caught up arguing with Mao Huizhu that he’d forgotten to feed her, and the little girl had become impatient.

“Oh no, sorry, sorry!” Chenchen hurriedly said. “Big Brother will feed you right away.”

Then he shot Mao Huizhu a dirty look. “It’s all your fault, you shameless Auntie.”

“So clumsy!” Mao Huizhu snatched the spoon from him, scooped up some egg custard, and fed it to Nuonuo.

“C’mere, Nuonuo! Aunt Zhu will feed you.”

Chenchen indignantly kicked Mao Huizhu’s leg, and she immediately kicked him back.

Watching the two of them, Nuonuo giggled happily.

The breakfast table was lively with laughter.
