Chapter 3992: Law Division Head
Chapter 3992: Law Division Head
Lin Mu’s answer silenced several people.
They had expected some grand explanation, perhaps a hidden treasure or an ancient inheritance. Instead, Lin Mu had dismissed their concerns as though they were discussing something trivial.
Yet the question of his lifespan was far more serious than that, and the elders exchanged looks. Every Immortal understood the limitations of lifespan as immortality was never truly eternal.
Even after reaching the Transcendent Immortal Realm, one’s lifespan remained tied to the tribulations one endured. A Transcendent Immortal could potentially gain a tremendous amount of lifespan from a successful tribulation, with thirty thousand years from a single tribulation already being considered an extraordinary gain.
Yet subsequent tribulations became increasingly difficult and there was never a guarantee that a cultivator would obtain the maximum possible lifespan from every tribulation. Of course Life-extending treasures could help.
Ancient fruits, rare elixirs, special medicines, and treasures capable of restoring vitality could push one’s lifespan even further. Reaching fifty thousand years through such means was already an astounding achievement.
But one hundred thousand years was an entirely different matter. That sort of lifespan had become almost mythical. Only a tiny number of ancient existences were known to have accomplished something remotely similar.
An elder whispered, "If he truly has been alive for more than one hundred thousand years, then..." He hesitated.
Another elder finished the thought. "Wouldn’t that mean he is a multiple Transcendent Immortal?"
The surrounding elders fell silent.
Someone swallowed. "Just like the Ancestor?"
The word carried considerable weight.
The sect’s Ancestors were existences standing at a level ordinary elders could barely comprehend. If Junior Elder Zhenyu had somehow survived for more than one hundred thousand years and continued advancing through Transcendent Tribulations, then his current strength would be difficult to estimate.
Several gazes immediately returned to Lin Mu and his cultivation remained impossible to determine. They could sense his Immortal Qi and they could sense the astonishing vitality contained within his body.
They could even tell that his physical cultivation was extremely profound. Yet whenever their senses attempted to determine his actual cultivation, they encountered an indistinct barrier that prevented them from seeing clearly.
That uncertainty suddenly became much more significant. Daoist Bone Ruler noticed the reactions of the elders and his eyes narrowed slightly.
"Enough speculation." His voice was quiet, yet the entire group heard it.
He looked directly at Lin Mu. "Your claim has several problems."
Lin Mu smiled faintly. "I would be disappointed if the Head of the Law Division accepted everything after hearing a few words."
Daoist Bone Ruler ignored the remark. "Junior Elder Zhenyu disappeared more than one hundred thousand years ago. His soul lamp eventually extinguished. No confirmed trace of him has appeared since."
Lin Mu remained silent.
"The person standing before us has emerged from the Mad Demon Depths immediately after creating a massive breach in a sealed prison. He claims to possess the identity of a deceased elder, possessing knowledge of ancient sect matters, and his cultivation cannot be determined."
Daoist Bone Ruler’s gaze sharpened. "Those circumstances require investigation."
Lin Mu’s smile faded slightly.
Daoist Bone Ruler continued, "You say you are Zhenyu. Then surrender yourself to the Law Division. You will undergo deep questioning and an investigation into your identity. Your memories, cultivation, soul, and other identifying characteristics will be examined. If you are truly Junior Elder Zhenyu, the sect will naturally acknowledge you."
Several elders nodded as the proposal was reasonable from the perspective of the Law Division.
Daoist Bone Ruler continued, "If you refuse, then we have to consider another possibility."
Lin Mu’s eyes narrowed.
"You may be a prisoner of the Mad Demon Depths who somehow escaped and acquired information regarding Junior Elder Zhenyu." The surrounding elders became silent upon hearing that.
Daoist Bone Ruler’s expression remained completely composed. "Until your identity is established, I cannot allow an unknown cultivator who has emerged from the Mad Demon Depths to freely enter the sect."
Lin Mu stared at him and then his shoulders began to shake. One of the elders looked confused and a second later, Lin Mu threw his head back and laughed.
"Hahahahaha!" His laughter thundered across the plains.
Several disciples watching from afar instinctively covered their ears. Lin Mu finally lowered his head while his eyes gleamed with amusement.
"What an extraordinary generation." He slowly looked across the assembled elders. "After disappearing for over one hundred thousand years, this old man finally returns to his sect, digs himself out of the Mad Demon Depths, and receives an interrogation order from a group of juniors."
His smile widened. "Your egos have grown as high as the heavens."
A few elders looked embarrassed but Daoist Bone Ruler remained completely calm. "You may find this amusing."
Lin Mu’s smile faded. "I do."
"Then you misunderstand the situation." Daoist Bone Ruler’s voice remained steady. "I am responsible for the safety of the sect. Your identity has not been established. You emerged from a prison containing dangerous prisoners, and your first action was to destroy a massive portion of its containment structure."
Lin Mu glanced toward the crater. "That was necessary."
"For what?"
Lin Mu’s eyes became mysterious. "For this old man’s return."
Daoist Bone Ruler stared at him while Lin Mu smiled. The two remained locked in silence.
Finally, Daoist Bone Ruler sighed. "I offered you the easy path."
Lin Mu’s brows rose. "Easy path?"
"Come with me peacefully. Allow the Law Division to investigate your identity."
"And if I decline?"
Daoist Bone Ruler’s expression remained unchanged. "Then we use the hard path."
His hand moved and a strange weapon appeared in his palm. It was a ruler, but not any common wooden or metal ruler. It was a ruler fashioned from pale bone. The moment it appeared, several elders visibly stiffened.
One High Elder instinctively pulled his shoulders backward while another rubbed his palm. A third elder’s face turned slightly pale. Lin Mu noticed the reactions and he almost laughed. The Bone Ruler was clearly more famous than he had expected.
