Chapter 244: Unexpected Message
Chapter 244: Unexpected Message
Late in the evening, as the sun retreated behind the horizon, Wolf District was filled with the sound of people happily going about their day. The sound of children playing in the streets and adults bartering for goods. It was a tranquil atmosphere of different groups of people coexisting as one.
But further away from this peaceful bliss, a battle ensued. One that caused the surroundings to shake from the force of the powers being used.
"Not bad, you guys are improving," I said as I looked at the tired faces of Isabella, Kumo, Selthia, and Sylvie in front of me.
They were all breathing heavily, almost ready to collapse.
"Alright, let’s go again."
"What! You can’t be serious, we’ve been at it for the whole day," Isabella quickly protested.
Looking at her, she was sweating a lot, and her face was paler than usual. I even saw her puking a few times, which was strange for vampires.
"Feel free to take a break if you need to. The others and I will continue," I said, but for some reason she didn’t seem pleased by that, maybe she thought they would think less of her or she would look weak.
"Sylvie, you should take a break with her, you also seem tired," Selthia suddenly spoke up.
"Uh, Sylvie isn’t tired. She wants to train with Lee," Sylvie quickly refused and instead prepared to attack while the others were still tired.
The speed at which she moved towards me was impressive. Her claws moved just inches away from my face. Her fighting style could easily overwhelm an opponent.
While my attention was on Sylvie, Kumo fired a few of her webs which were nearly invisible to the naked eye but had the tensile strength of steel. To stop her webs, I had to focus on my senses, but that was difficult to do with Selthia pointing her trident at me.
They had improved quite a lot with this small amount of training. I was impressed, but I would never give them the win. Every time they even came close to winning, I would start getting a bit more serious, forcing them to up their game.
BOOM!
Selthia released a powerful water cannon towards me while Kumo used her webs to lock me in place, and Sylvie leaped back to escape the blast. It was after she leaped back that I realized that she had managed to scratch me, infecting me with her venom.
I felt my vision double immediately, and my strength dropped significantly, but it only lasted for a few seconds. Sylvie had accidentally scratched me with her claws countless times, so I had gotten used to her venom.
Without wasting another second, I focused my attention on Selthia’s attack.
BOOM!
My fist impacted on the blast, releasing all the energy that was stored up, creating a loud explosion. The area was then engulfed in steam due to the force of the punch. I then used the lack of visibility to sneak up on the girls and incapacitate them one by one.
Sylvie was the only one who was able to sense me due to her high sense of smell, but a tickle to her side was all it took to get her down to her knees, though Selthia and Kumo weren’t so lucky. I went a bit harder on them.
The only person I didn’t touch was Isabella, and when the steam cleared, she was the only one left standing upright while the other girls were incapacitated. She instinctively clutched her stomach when she saw that everyone else had fallen.
"Alpha Liam!" Just then, Kaguya showed up and bowed before me.
"What is it, Kaguya?"
"There is something you must see; it’s those messengers you sent to Cassian’s wife."
I listened to Kaguya’s heartbeat as she spoke; it seemed unsteady. Her eyes also darted back and forth between me and her daughter.
"Ahem* They are at the gate... I’ll show you to them."
I nodded and walked beside Kaguya as we headed for the gate, leaving the others behind.
"We’ll continue your training after I return!" I shouted as I left.
Kaguya and I walked in mostly silence, but her eyes would waver over to me every once in a while as if she wanted to say something.
"My daughter can be very stubborn at times, can’t she?" she finally said.
"Yes, it’s one of her most charming features."
Kaguya smiled warmly.
"She’s lucky you’re so patient."
After a few minutes, we finally arrived at the gate to see a group of guards surrounding something. My nose caught onto the scent, so I immediately knew it was rotten flesh, most likely belonging to a corpse.
My hunch was immediately proven correct when I came upon the remains of the two vampires I sent out. They were both decapitated, the heads lying on their chests.
"I’m sorry, alpha, these men failed, but if you send me..." one of the guards at the gate hastily offered himself to go, but I stopped him with a wave of my hand.
I was certain that he would meet the same fate.
"Let me go instead," Kaguya said, offering up herself.
"You know Cassian’s wife, do you think you have the power to beat her?"
"..."
My question was met with silence, which gave me the answer I needed. I then knelt down to take as closer look at the corpses as there was something I noticed.
"His lips are black. It looks as if someone smeared charcoal on his them to get it that way."
I also noticed that his cheeks was puffed out as if someone had stuffed something inside. Following my hunch, I lifted up the head and opened its mouth.
"What is that?" Kaguya asked as the mouth was opened wide enough for her to see what was on the inside.
Without wasting another second, I hastily pulled out whatever it was that was stuffed in the vampire’s mouth. To my surprise, it seemed to be a piece of...
"Paper? It has a message written on it."
