Chapter 248: Last Leg
Chapter 248: Last Leg
Whenever I got close to her, the knee-jerk reaction was for her to teleport. This time, I did things differently. I sent my shadow hounds in before I attacked. It leaped at her from behind during the chaos.
It didn’t take much effort for her to evade the shadow hound, but that split second where her eyes weren’t on me was all I needed. I grabbed onto her hand; this time, her knee-jerk reaction wasn’t to teleport, it was to throw a kick.
I raised my elbow just in time to safeguard myself against the danger of her heel. The impact sent a strong force through my hand, which spoke to her strength, but still, my grip on her wrist remained strong.
Even then, I couldn’t shake the feeling that she was enjoying herself.
"Oh, back and forth, it’s as if we’re dancing," she mused with a smile on her face. "Let’s take it somewhere else."
Saying that, she instantly teleported outside the mansion, and since I was holding her hand, I was teleported along with her.
"Are you mad?!" I couldn’t help but shout when I realized where the two of us were.
Looking around, we were surrounded by clouds.
"Isn’t it beautiful?"
She closed her eyes and opened her arms wide as the two of us plummeted towards the city down below.
Still, falling from such a height wasn’t enough to kill us, and even if our bodies were destroyed, both of us had strong healing traits. I still maintained my grip on her wrist as we fell from the sky.
Seeing nothing else to be done, I closed my eyes and gave in to the fall. The cold night air rushed against my face as my clothes rippled in the wind. A moment later, I heard the sound of giggling and opened my eyes to see Mariah trying to stifle her laughter.
"You’re such an idiot! You actually closed your eyes."
"As long as I keep holding you, then both of us are destined to fall. You can’t teleport away."
"Well, so be it, let’s see who heals first," she smiled, then closed her eyes.
I followed after her and also closed my eyes. I braced myself for impact until suddenly I felt something underneath my back along with something soft. I opened my eyes to see that I was lying on the ground with Mariah lying on top of me.
’She must’ve teleported us.’
She raised her hand in a stabbing motion, her nails growing long and pointed.
"It’s a pity to kill you," she said before stabbing her nails down towards my chest, aiming for my heart. Seeing what her attack did the last time, I was forced to release the grip of her wrist and block her attack by redirecting the trajectory of her hand.
The moment she realized she had failed, she teleported once again. It was then that I realized that we were in the garden outside her mansion.
Mariah stood just a few feet away from me with her arms opened wide.
"You are surprisingly fun to play with, but now I must end this."
Just then, black smoke began pouring out of her body, and the shadow at her feet began to grow longer. The shadow continued to grow until it suddenly shot out and covered everything. It was like a giant dome was created, covering the entire estate.
Inside, everything from the ground to the building and trees was covered in shadow. The whole world seemed pitch black, and Mariah was at the center of it, seemingly having the time of her life. It was the same situation as with the room before, only bigger.
Inside this dark space, my sense of smell and hearing was all I could rely on since everything was pitch black. But even then, the darkness didn’t produce any sound, and everything smelled the same, so it was still difficult to keep track of everything that was going on.
I stood ready to attack Mariah, figuring this was my only way out, but before I could even attack, the shadows on the ground wrapped around my feet. The moment it wrapped around my feet, it grew spikes and embedded them inside my flesh.
Summoning my strength, I plucked my feet free, but almost immediately, a hand made from the same shadow pushed from the ground and grabbed at me. It was at that moment that I realized that I had lost track of Mariah.
She was somewhere in the darkness lurking and waiting to attack. Her bloodlust was tightly suppressed to the point where it was impossible to sense. I evaded the arms that sprouted from the ground like flowers all while keeping my senses sharp for Mariah, lurking like a predator.
Spikes burst from the ground towards me. I was forced to evade both the spikes and the shadow hands before activating my thermal vision. It didn’t matter how dark the space was; once there was another living creature here, I would be able to sense them with my thermal vision.
I spotted Mariah; it was just as I thought. She was waiting for the perfect time to attack. I gave her that opportunity by allowing myself to be captured by one of the giant hands, and just like clockwork, she struck.
She appeared in front of me with her hand ready to pierce through my chest. The moment she struck, I pulled myself free from the shadow, clawed at her abdomen, creating a sizable gash. She clutched her stomach and followed up with a kick, but I took that moment to break her leg.
Earlier during our battle, I noticed something: the wounds inflicted by me took longer to heal.
As I stood above her injured body with my claws raised, Mariah never lost her excitement. She seemed to be enjoying herself now more than ever.
"What are you waiting for, aren’t you going to kill me?" Her face was flushed, and she didn’t seem to be fighting back.
But at that moment, I froze. I was no longer interested in her.
Something else was coming.
