Chapter 249: Something is here!
Chapter 249: Something is here!
Though the shadow made it difficult for me to sense my surroundings, I could still sense that there was something coming. I used my thermal vision skill to glance around at my surroundings, but still, I couldn’t spot whatever it was.
Mariah looked at me confused. From the look on her face, it seemed she couldn’t sense it.
"What are you doing?"
"Something is coming."
"That’s impossible. Nothing can get through my shadow. It’s impossible to break through from the outside."
Mariah seemed confident that nothing could break through her shadow, but my instincts told me otherwise. But, I did the only thing I could do and waited. If something was out there then chances are it would figure out a way to enter. For now the best thing to do was wait.
As I waited, I turned my attention to Mariah, there was something I wanted to ask.
"Mariah, tell me something, you don’t seem angry that I killed your husband and sons. Were their lives that meaningless to you?"
It was strange; during our fight, I couldn’t sense any malice from her. She instead seemed to be having the time of her life. She was strange, to say the least.
"My husband was a boring man, and as for my sons, they were his. Allucard was too much like his father, and Victor was too much of an oddball. He left and went to the human world to suit his tastes. He didn’t even say a word before he left. My only purpose to them was to give birth. Even though I was their mother they saw me the same way my husband did. Why would I care? Now I’m free."
"Free to do what? Do you wish to spend the rest of your life here in this city as the widow of the once powerful Cassian Veylmont?"
My question seemed to anger her. She clenched her fist and began glaring at me.
"No, I don’t. I wish to experience the world without being tied down by anyone. This fight between you and I is the happiest I’ve felt in years. It’s the only thing that gives me joy." She said, her eyes seemed almost child like as she spoke. Like a newborn going to the beach for the first time and being blown away by the ocean.
At that moment, I finally felt as if I understood her: She was a frog at the bottom of a well, dreaming of the sky but unaware of the ocean. She knew nothing or joy, excite and thrill.
I grabbed her chin and made her to look at me. Her eyes were beautiful. They were the color of blood seemed to sparkle like the moon itself.
Just from touching her face, her skin felt soft. So soft that I had to wonder if she was a person like me. Staring into her eyes, I swept away the strand of blonde hair sticking to her cheek. Her body seemed to shiver when I touched her as if it was the first time she was feeling the gentle touch of another person.
"What are you..."
Before she could question it, I lowered myself and pressed my lips against trembling lip. It felt cold from the night air but it quickly warmed up. Her heart which before was pounding away in her chest, suddenly stopped.
Her eyes widened, and her face flushed more than I thought it would as if it was the first time she was being kissed. After a few seconds, I finally pulled away. Her face was light pink and her breathing was all over the place.
Looking at her panicked state, I couldn’t help but smile and asked:
"Join me, and you can experience more things."
"I... I... W-what..."
She stammered over her words, trying to put them together, but before she could, I felt something. I activated my thermal vision, and there it was: something was tearing through the darkness.
"What is that?" I asked.
I left Mariah on the ground to take a look at what it was. Her hand was on her chest, and she tried to regain herself.
"Get a grip Mariah." I heard her whisper to herself trying to calm down but as our eyes met again, her face got even more crimson. Her face was red to the point where it looked like steam was coming out of it.
"Don’t look at me like that." She whispered again, this time turning away her face.
She wasn’t in any condition to fight, so I decided to leave her for now. I focused on the monster that was trying to force its way in. I watched and waited until I saw a hand push through the dome Mariah had created.
On the arm that pushed through, I could see armor. The arm ripped the darkness open. That tear was enough to cause a ripple, and with that, the entire dome dispersed at once.
I was back in the garden. Mariah was still a few feet away, lying on the ground, but what caught my attention was what was in front of me.
"Khalissi?"
I saw a man without a head standing next to a horse. Upon the horse, I saw Khalissi lying unconscious. There was a wound on her forehead, and blood dripped down her face.
She was battered and bruised and weakened far beyond what I had ever seen from her before.
I didn’t have to ask; I instantly knew that the man without the head was the cause for this. Something told me he was a demon. But what threw me off was the fact that he didn’t have a head and the horse.
’Could he be one of the four horsemen? No.’
I immediately threw away the thought. The power radiating from him wasn’t the same I felt from death. He wasn’t one of the four horsemen, but he was powerful; I knew that much. He was strong enough to incapacitate Khalissi, and he didn’t have any noticeable injuries. This spoke to his strength.
The headless horseman then proceeded to remove a whip which was hanging over his horse’s back. The whip looked as if it was made of human spines, and at the end of it was a curved bone carved into a stinger.
He raised his hand and cracked the whip. The force behind the whip made it sound as if a sonic blast had gone off. My ears rang from the explosion.
I quickly went on guard. It felt as if he was giving me a warning to be ready.
But something I found strange about this demon was that it didn’t have a killing intent. Still, I put my suspicions away and instead focused on Khalissi. That demon could turn and kill her in an instant, and I would be powerless to stop it.
My first priority was to save her. Still, this time when he raised his whip, I knew it would be directed at me.
BOOM!
The speed at which the whip moved through the air was faster than the speed of sound itself. I evaded the tip of the whip by the skin of my teeth, but the explosion that followed was enough to send me flying.
I felt my ribs snap from the force, but they healed before my feet even hit the ground. The moment my feet hit the ground, I charged at him, and he in turn raised his whip once again. The tip made a soft swish as it passed over my head, but I knew that just like last time, it was the sonic blast that I should be worried about.
Realizing this, I dropped down low in an effort to evade the sonic blast, but by masterfully moving his hand, the horseman was able to change the direction of the whip.
In a blink of an eye, the tip was reaching for my throat, and before I could even react, the bone pierced through my neck.
BOOM!
