Chapter 264: Beginning of a Battle

Chapter 264: Beginning of a Battle

[Congratulations, you have ascended to level 52]

About half an hour had passed since the battle began, and I had already ascended 2 levels. It was a bloodbath. At first, the civilians had no choice but to run from the incoming slaughter, but soon they realized they had no choice but to fight back.

The first to realize this was the minotaurs. They had the head and body of a bull, only they stood upright. They had thick biceps and the faint outline of abs could be seen beneath their fur. The fur on their bodies was pitch black, making it hard to see them at night. Their horns were thick and were about half a meter long.

They rammed their horns into the ghouls’ hearts while some of them wielded battleaxes. White steam puffed out of their nostrils with every wild breath they took. Even the valkyries were being pushed back by them.

I watched one of the minotaurs brutally chop a ghoul to pieces with its battleaxe. Even after the ghoul was dead, he still continued to swing his battleaxe at the body. They weren’t getting any EXP from killing the ghouls since all the EXP went to me after the ghouls were killed.

After chopping the ghouls until there was nothing but minced pieces, he spat on the corpses. After that, he turned around and that was when the two of us locked eyes. The minotaur took a deep breath, which caused a puff of steam to erupt from its nose and mouth.

It dug its hooves into the ground before lowering its body and charging at me. For a creature that big, I was surprised by the speed at which it moved.

The battleaxe it wielded was bigger than my entire body. I lowered my body and parried the blade with my claws. The impact sent sparks flying, and the massive minotaur was forced to take a step back.

I pressed my advantage and kept myself low as I closed the distance between me and the minotaur.

Another swing. This time it was a vertical slash. I realized at that moment that he wasn’t just swinging wildly. It’s blows were precise and well timed.

I side-stepped the attack at the very last second to create an opening, then with the opening I created, I thrust my claws forward, landing a precise blow to its heart. Its ribcage was as hard as steel, but my claws still tore through them easily.

The massive battleaxe was the first to fall from its hand. Then its legs began to give way as the minotaur staggered backwards. At the same time, I tugged at its heart, pulling it out as it fell to the ground.

Without sparing the fallen beast a glance, I consumed its heart. The power I got from it was a drop in a bucket, but I still considered the experience well worth it. When fighting giant creatures, especially if they wielded a weapon, the key was to keep your head down.

Even if you were faster and more agile, one slip-up could mean everything if your head wasn’t kept lowered at all times. I realized this the first time I got bashed in the skull while fight a bigger opponent.

If it wasn’t for my healing ability, it would’ve been fatal. My regeneration ability had been a huge factor in me learning how to fight different opponents. I didn’t have to worry about getting injured, so I could always rush in at an opponent to learn more about its weaknesses and how to properly deal with it.

Just as I finished devouring the heart, I caught the attention of another minotaur. Unlike the other minotaur, this one wasn’t wielding a battleaxe. The beast charged at me, the force of its legs pushing off the ground caused the ground to crack.

I planted my feet on the ground as I readied myself for the attack. I didn’t intend to dodge the attack; instead, I grabbed its horns and used its own momentum to lift the minotaur up into the air. Then, using most of my strength, I smashed it to the ground.

The ground beneath our feet was smashed, creating a huge crater. The force from the impact caused the minotaur’s ribs to burst through its sides while its head was mostly sunken in. Yet it was still breathing.

Raising my claws, I ripped out its heart, killing him instantly. After consuming the heart, I took a look around.

The street was covered in corpses. Some were running. others were running but death permeated everywhere.

It wasn’t just the minotaurs who had started to fight back; some of the other groups who had started to gather were too. I spotted a few lizard men fighting among the minotaurs. Their fast and erratic movements made it difficult for the valkyries to keep up with them.

They danced around the valkyries’ attacks with ease, slashing at any open flesh. They even used their reptilian tails to trip them. I didn’t intervene in their battle; I wanted them to learn and grow stronger from their experience, even if some of them had to die.

Selice was battling against one particularly tough lizard, but unlike the others, she pressed her advantage, which was her ability to fly. By flying above them, the lizard men found it hard to fight against her.

Then, when she spotted an opening, she descended from the sky with her spear and planted it into their hearts, killing them instantly. It was obvious that she was a beginner at combat, but she was holding her own. That spoke to how much she trained in preparation for this moment. As time passes, they would only get stronger.

Just then, one of the lizard men jumped into the air with its claws raised. With little effort, I caught the creature in mid-air by its throat. I crushed its throat, then slammed its squirming body to the ground, sounding a sickening impact.

It was hard to control my strength when fighting such weak creatures; due to that, it caused the lizard man to explode when I slammed it onto the ground. It looked like roadkill with blood, flesh, and even internal organs spilling out onto the street.

I rummaged through what was left of it and grabbed its heart.

[Congratulations, you have ascended to level 53]

I had leveled up once again. Seeing the notification, I couldn’t help but smile in satisfaction.

BOOM!

Just then, a thunderous explosion ripped through the air, and in an instant, an entire city block went up in flames. It wasn’t where I was, but it was close. The flames produced from the explosion were purple, and seeing this, I immediately knew who was responsible.

This was the work of the lich! Just as that thought crossed my mind, an army of wights descended upon us.
