Chapter 275: An Impossible Goal
Chapter 275: An Impossible Goal
[Congratulations, you have ascended to level 75]
I leveled up to the level which Khalissi said I would most likely evolve and gain a second bloodline.
Nothing happened.
The dull system notification rang out in my mind, and then a message appeared, just like the other times I leveled up.
Then nothing.
My mind immediately went to the worst. Khalissi didn’t explicitly say that I would level up at level 75. She said she thought it likely.
Does that mean I wouldn’t evolve?
Am I destined to stay as weak as I am now?
Thinking about it, why did Khalissi make that assumption in the first place? Using a loophole in the contract we created, she told me that Greater Fiend demons leveled up at level 50, which was when she leveled up, and that arch demons leveled up at 75.
Arch demons were the sons of Lucifer, so why would she think I would level up at the same time as them?
Wanting answers, I turned my attention to Khalissi only to see her smiling at me.
My expression immediately darkened.
"Darling, is everything alright?" Selthia asked, but I walked past her and pulled Khalissi into a different room, closing the door behind us.
The smile on her face seemed to brighten when I grabbed her hand.
"It happened, didn’t it? You’re finally at that level," she said.
"I didn’t level up," I quickly replied, unable to hold back the agitation in my voice.
The moment I said I didn’t level up, a chuckle escaped her, then full-blown laughter. Feeling annoyed over her lack of answers and her clear enjoyment of the situation, I forcefully tugged her closer to me.
"I don’t see the joke. If I can’t evolve to protect us, then we all will be killed. Explain, or you’ll be the first one I toss to Damian."
It wasn’t a bluff. I just barely managed to hold onto the little self-control I had at that moment to not kill her when she laughed.
The smile never wavered from her face as she reached out and touched my face.
"At times like these, you are exactly like him," she whispered. There wasn’t any sign of fear in her eyes. "I had the feeling she wouldn’t mind being killed, as crazy as it sounds. "It’s a good thing that you didn’t evolve. It’s a blessing in disguise."
Her words caught me by complete surprise. Nothing made sense. This seemed like a puzzle I couldn’t quite figure out on my own.
"How is this a blessing?" I asked.
"Among all the races in the world, one race evolved the slowest of them all. They evolve at level 100, which usually takes an average of 500 years to achieve if they aren’t in any rush. They are a race with a high lifespan, so they can take their time if they want."
"I don’t have the luxury of time," I said.
"I know, which is why you should make use of the opportunity before you."
Seeing that I had no clue what she meant, Khalissi continued, her smile growing wider.
"Strip this city for all it is worth. Take every EXP they have until there is nothing," she said.
I understood the implications behind her words perfectly. Whereas before I was planning on killing 27,000 people in order to evolve, now she was suggesting that I should wipe out all 4 million residents of Purgatory in order to evolve.
Who is to say that I would even evolve at level 100 after that?
"Is there anything even remotely concrete to say that I would evolve at level 100?" I asked, to which Khalissi shook her head.
"There is no proof that you will, but this is your last chance. Remember, with your evolution, you won’t only unlock your power but also the truth about who you really are. Would you rather I give you the answers, or would you rather take them for yourself no matter how hard and bloody it may be?"
"If I go through with this, it won’t be easy. Just killing roughly 27,000 took a full day; how long will it take me to wipe out a city of 4 million, all while making sure I don’t get myself killed by Damian? I see myself and everyone in my pack dying before I even get to half that number."
I didn’t see that happening. And this time, for once, I didn’t have any tricks up my sleeves to make sure that things went my way.
"I honestly don’t see a way out of this for you. You’re trying to shorten 500 years of hard work within a few days; of course it won’t be easy. Maybe if we come together as a pack and formulate something, we can..."
"No,"
I immediately stopped her. There were some things to be done as a pack, while there were other things that must be done by me, the alpha. In order for me to get what I want, I had to perform a feat that was all but impossible.
"Based on how things are going, how long do you think it will take for us to get to the 4 million?" I asked.
Khalissi rested her hand on her chin and started thinking.
"If your pack probably killed around 20,000 people in the span of a day in order for you to evolve, it would take 200 days," she said.
Hearing this, I couldn’t help but sigh, feeling myself fall further into despair.
"If we all worked harder towards it, then we could speed up the time it would take less time. No, I can make it take less time. I’ve been in countless battles with the demon army. I know the effective methods in making a city fall," Khalissi said before taking a hold of my hand and placing it on her chest. I could feel her heart pounding inside her chest.
"You are my alpha for now. I can tell you’re thinking something; just give me the orders and I’ll do it. Whatever it is... Just don’t falter here. Even though I know it’s impossible, if you say you can do it, then I’ll believe you," she said.
At that moment, she seemed surprisingly gentle.
"Alright then, I have a plan..."
