Chapter 1029: They Are Already Evolving
Chapter 1029: They Are Already Evolving
I turned back to look at the rest of my girls who were clearing up the bugs that I had missed.
More of them were pouring out from the tunnels around us but I simply lifted my hand and clenched my fist, crushing them with my telekinesis.
It was a simple thing of clearing out the bugs at the tunnel entrance before we were already making our way through the tunnels to get to the Queen.
Without needing to worry about an audience, we did not hold back so I was using my powers to the fullest degree here.
Patricia was especially excited about it because this was the first time for her to see us fighting to the best of our ability instead of holding back.
I reached out my hand and sent even more of the bugs flying away to crash into the walls, crushing them with the weight of the force.
"So cool... I was always fascinated with the idea that people can actually gain power like this... It’s like a game where you can just do things with a single thought and yet this is not a game and it’s actually real life! I never could ask the Nobles this but... How does it feel to have that power?!" Patricia squeaked at my side, not even looking concerned that we were in the middle of a war zone.
I guess she trusts me that much to be able to feel so relaxed about it.
I scratched my cheek, "Honestly... It’s a little scary to know that I could have so much power just like this..."
She clasped her hands together, "Oh! I know what you mean! It’s like after you start hacking a game, the game becomes too easy and not interesting anymore, right?! I totally get it!"
Well... I guess that was somewhat accurate... Though I wouldn’t say that it’s like I started cheating in life but more that I was worried this power would get me attention that I didn’t want and put me in danger.
But I guess part of it was also the worry that I become too reliant on this power.
That’s why I only use it in situations that are needed or otherwise hard to deal with without it.
Right then, Amber flew above me and shot out a gout of flames that consumed the bugs that were in the midst of crawling out of another tunnel, cooking them all and incinerating them into ash.
Patricia seemed completely transfixed by the sight and I think she would have looked pretty cute if she was here in person but unfortunately, she’s still piloting this suit right now.
Oh well, I’ll take what I can anyway.
We advanced again, my hands moving to sweep the entire crowd of bugs aside and smashing them into the wall to crush them casually.
As we got deeper, the bugs finally sent out their elites and this nest had bugs that looked like wasps with the stingers and the wings to allow flight.
Now it made more sense why the tunnels were so huge in size, it’s so that these things can fly around freely...
Well... It didn’t really matter to me anyway.
They tried to descend on us but all I needed to do was to focus on them and they stopped in midair before they were smashed into the ground, all of them turned into meat paste.
Interestingly, it seemed like they thought I had some kind of cooldown before I could use that power again and a few of them specifically waited for me to crush their comrades before suddenly appearing from another tunnel to rush at me.
They are learning huh...
Too bad but I don’t have something as lame as a cooldown.
I froze all of them in the air and smashed the next group against the wall as well, crushing them without mercy.
More of them poured out of the tunnels, as though they decided that they could just swarm me with numbers now that their plan had failed.
This time it was Amber’s turn as she burned them all into a crisp and opened the path towards the heart of the nest.
We moved into a cavern where an even bigger number of those wasp bugs were waiting for us and they swarmed at us the moment we entered.
The nest has been quite aggressive in pumping out these elite variants I see... Hmm? No wait...
These bugs look kind of... New?
The elites we dealt with just now were bigger in size and their stingers were also bigger.
These elites however... Their stingers were distinctly smaller and their own size was also maybe a quarter size smaller.
Did these just literally hatch?
I’m going to make a guess that after that humanoid bug came here, they accelerated the hatching of these elites in preparation for a raid to happen.
I guess they were already expecting to be attacked, but too bad this didn’t make a difference.
Right as I finished crushing the entire cavern of these bugs, another group climbed out from the Queen’s chambers and I realised these were the same ones as the humanoid bugs that we saw escaping from the nest.
All of them had four arms and the exact same profile as the other humanoid bug, as if it had transferred its genetic makeup to this nest in order for them to produce more of it.
That’s actually a little concerning...
If we were to think about it... If one nest managed to make a bug that is very effective in combating against us, then they could spread this to the other nests and have each nest start producing them.
Tsk... We have to make sure that this piece of news gets passed to the others who are fighting the bugs then.
Amber took care of them while the others kept the bugs behind us at bay, allowing me to step inside the Queen’s chambers uncontested.
The Queen of this nest was also resting on top of a pile of Prisma Crystals and it seemed to glare at me when I entered.
I didn’t bother trying to negotiate or gloat and just simply tore its head off with a wave of my hand.
There. Now the other bugs in this nest should also die now.
...
Any second now.
...
Aaaaaany second now...
...
...
The bugs outside the chamber were still swarming towards us.
"Boss?! Why haven’t you killed the Queen yet?!" Ries shouted out from outside, her voice barely audible through the comms as the sound of her guns almost drowned her out.
"I already did!! The other bugs aren’t dying?!"
"They aren’t, Boss!"
Shit... Does that mean they have already evolved to the point where killing the Queen no longer kills the rest of the bugs that were tied to it?
"We’ll have to do this the old fashioned way then! Wipe out all of them! And make sure to send an update to the fleet to let them know this could be the case for the nest they are fighting now!"
My girls immediately settled themselves to start culling the bugs seriously, no longer holding themselves back anymore since we thought we just needed to clear a path to the Queen and not eradicate all the bugs in here.
I left Amber in charge of burning the Queen’s chambers to get rid of the eggs while I joined the others in smashing the bugs.
That was when I heard a shout coming from Amber and I turned in time to see another bug free itself from the Queen bug’s thorax, revealing a similar looking humanoid bug as the first one.
It gave us a single look and flew up towards the ceiling where a crevice was located, clearly intending on running away.
Too bad for it but, unlike the last one where we couldn’t use our powers, we could do it here so I just plucked it out of the air and slammed it down on the forest floor.
"Go girl!" I ordered, prompting Freyja to lunge at the bug enthusiastically.
She couldn’t fight the other one since it ran away so I let her have her fun with this one, watching my dog tear off the limbs of the bug before delivering several quick slashes with her paws.
She then delivered the final blow by biting off its head and tossing it against the wall to smash it into pieces.
Pretty anticlimactic end for it but we weren’t going to take any chances after the last one managed to escape from us.
One thing I did notice was that the surviving bugs seemed to be quite disorganised now that the Queen was dead. Thus, I suspect that the Queen’s death still affected them somewhat, just that they no longer died immediately like before.
Well... Still didn’t really matter anyway since we can kill all of them without much problems... It’s just that it’s a slog for us now...
