Chapter 1030: Got To Reap Our Own Rewards Too
I reached out my hands and levitated the corpses of the bugs to the side, piling them up alongside the others to clear out a space in the cavern.
Ries had gone back to the previous nest so that she could see how the Reapers dealt with the bug corpses and how they mined the Prisma Crystals to use as reference for our own mining operation.
Of course, we don’t plan to mine everything here but we do intend to at least mine some of it which we could sell or use for our own purposes.
Part of the reason why we won’t be mining everything was because it would take too long for us to clean out the entire cavern and we don’t really have any specialised tools to engage in such an operation on a large scale. Ries’s drones could only do so much with the time we have and I didn’t think just sitting here twiddling our thumbs for several days was something I wanted to do.
Sure, we could leave her drones here to mine on our behalf but that also meant we would need to come back here to pick them up again and I honestly can’t be bothered to do that once we are done with this nest.
After all, we still have to worry about the bugs evolving and becoming more dangerous as the days go by and we might even be called up again to deal with more nests if the bugs get too dangerous for normal Mercs to deal with.
I sincerely hope that it does not come down to that and the military and Mercs could handle this on their own.
After all... There’s still the dog army that Nerissa was in charge of so I think they should be fine...
Ries soon returned with her drones in tow and started setting them to mine the crystals as well as dissecting the bugs for the valuable parts.
Like we figured out the last time, there was already a market for these things so we might as well take advantage of it and make some Credits selling off the bug parts.
Ries would be liaising with Vier to decide what materials to prioritise since Vier would be the one handling the sales.
I watched the drones get to work in mining the crystals, all of them using precision lasers to carve them out of the wall.
Even with that, the process was pretty slow as the crystals were pretty hardy and needed quite a bit of lasering before they broke off.
Ries skipped over to me, "Mmm... The Reapers have really big machines to mine the crystals so they can clear the entire cavern in a day or two. Unfortunately, with the tools I have right now, we might only be able to mine a portion of it."
"Hmm... Can I use my telekinesis to pull them out or something?"
"That could work... Or it could end up with you somehow triggering the crystals to release its energy and explode. I don’t know if it’s worth the risk though."
Renata’s voice then came from my chest, "Daddy! Can I eat some of them?"
Ah...
"Could you eat all the crystals and spit them out again?"
"Ehehe~ Of course! Do you want me to, Daddy?"
I was going to tell her to do it when Ries spoke up, "Umm... I don’t think that’s a good idea, Boss..."
That surprised me as I tilted my head at her, "Why not?"
"I mean... We’ve already cleared out another nest right after helping the Reapers clear one... If we spend the rest of the day mining it, we could still convince people that we needed more time to clear the nest than the Reapers did since they had more gear and people than us... If we strip the entire cavern of the crystals, we would not only be known for clearing the nest but also mining it faster than the Reapers and that’s going to raise a lot of questions..."
Right... I guess that’s true... We already cleared this nest in half the time that it took the Reapers to do theirs and this was done without help.
I think any more than this and people will ask even more questions which we don’t have an answer to without giving away the fact that we have three Psionics and an eldritch entity on our team.
I turned back to look at the cavern that was filled with crystals, "I suppose we’ll just take what we can with the drones and leave the rest to be harvested by the others then. But I guess having Renata eat some of them is fine too."
Ries nodded, "That would be for the best, Boss."
I left Ries to oversee the drones and stepped outside to check on the rest of my girls who were also watching over the other drones or helping out with the stripping of the bug materials.
"Hey, how’s things out here?" I called out.
Amber giggled, "Perfect, Tera. Did you try to use your powers to mine the crystals?"
"Ries told me not to do it so I didn’t..."
"Awww~ And here I was trying to bet that you would," She mumbled, passing what looked like a Credit Chip to Mara before they went right back to working on the bug corpses with their telekinesis.
Not only that, I also saw Yumiko and Lea exchanging Credit Chips too, like they had also bet on something and each of them lost at a specific bet.
Patricia skipped over to me, "Tera! Tera! Can I post my recording as well? I recorded the entire expedition earlier and I think this would be good content for all of us!! Right now, it’s even trending on the GalaNet since a lot of people are paying attention to the expeditions to this planet!"
"You can send it to Vier and get her to look through it. She’ll edit out any problematic parts and after that, you can see if the end result is worth posting."
"Ehehe~ I’ll do that!"
"I’m more surprised that this is even trending to begin with. Are there no other interesting stuff happening in the rest of the galaxy or something?"
She clapped her metallic hands together excitedly, "Oh! There are! It’s just that this was something that people really wanted to see happen for a long while now ever since the UTG had to order a retreat from the planet after their failure! This might be the biggest military expedition to happen in this entire year so there’s definitely a lot of eyes on it! I came here specifically to watch it too!"
Ah, I almost forgot that this bunnygirl literally left the Inner Colonies just to come all the way out here to be closer to the action, even though she had no stake in it.
I guess for people who live peaceful lives outside of Mercenary work, this would be a particularly exciting piece of entertainment for them since it wasn’t like we were at war with anyone right now.
Ironically, I think the Outer colonists would be watching this for a different reason since most of them might be Mercs who are also planning to join an expedition here to make some Credits. Thus, getting any videos of the place would help them prepare for it, especially if it came from Mercs like us.
Also, it’s still interesting to see how Patricia would switch how she acts depending on the topic we were talking about.
Right now, I’ve figured out that if it’s anything related to games, streaming, machines or sex, she would be very excitable and would talk your ear off about those topics. But if it’s anything else...
"So how’s the experience so far? Being one of us, I mean."
Her entire demeanor suddenly changed and she was poking her fingers together cutely, "Ah... Ah... Umm... It... It’s very nice... I... I didn’t think... It would be this... Umm... Exciting... It’s very different from... From games... Even though... Even though I’m just controlling a suit..."
I then pointed at her suit, "And what about the suit? I see Ries and you did quite a good job on it. Pretty impressive weapons there."
The suit perked up and I could just imagine her bunny ears straightening when she heard that question.
"Ah!! That’s right! I tried to replicate how Renata forms herself using nanobots but I realised you probably need an artificial intelligence powerful enough to form a hive mind to control all the individual bots! I could probably do it on a smaller scale but if I want something as complicated as what Renata is doing, I would need to grow my own AI to do so! That’s why this suit is made using modular parts for now while Ries and I work on the AI! We’re also hoping that Renata can help us with it so if everything works together, we could have working nanobots soon!"
Interesting how she switches up so quickly, huh?
