What Do You Mean I'm The Captain Of A Yandere Mercenary Company?

Chapter 1035: Big Bug Nest Problems

Chapter 1035: Big Bug Nest Problems

Tsk... They couldn’t lend me any of their tanks... Not because they don’t want to but...

At first, they offered some walker ’mech’ for me to use but it was just basically an exoskeleton with guns attached to it so it was pretty lame.

I thought they were being stingy and didn’t want me to use their stuff so I pointed out the fact that they had tanks and combat mechs that they seemed to be just leaving around to collect dust within the camp instead.

The problem was that the tunnels here seemed to be smaller than the other nests, which was odd considering that this nest was supposed to be way bigger with more bugs than the other nests.

That was when they told me that the bugs seemed to have filled the tunnels with dirt and shrunk the size of the tunnels intentionally, as though they knew that we would be coming and the main threat came from our war machines so they used the dirt to patch up the tunnel entrances to shrink it down.

The good thing was that they seemed to have only covered up the tunnel from entrance down to a few feet deep so we could technically dig out the dirt to expand its size again until it’s big enough for our machines to move in. But apparently every time they tried to get the workers to start digging, the bugs would run out to attack the miners and made it especially dangerous to do so.

They could use machines as well but the bugs also attacked them so they had to post guards watching the machines as they dug but that slowed things down since they would need to keep evacuating the miners whenever the bugs attacked while the guards took their place to fight back.

That period of time where the miners were trying to escape granted the bugs the space they needed to rush the guards which ended up costing several lives so they decided it was not worth it at the moment.

Which meant that we would either have to find another way to get past this restriction or choose to completely not rely on the war machines we have here.

Explosives were out of the question as well since it risked a collapse of the tunnels which would seal off the nest which would then make it even more annoying to deal with.

After hearing all these annoying circumstances, I gave General Rourke a look, "So what’s the plan here? Do you want to just fight through the tunnels with nothing but infantry and Power Armour units?"

He swept his gaze towards my girls who were standing behind me before shifting back to me, "I heard that you are able to clear a bug nest on your own?"

That is true but obviously that is only possible if my girls and I use our powers which I don’t think we can reveal that fact here.

I’ve already basically revealed that I was a Biotamer which might not have immediate repercussions right now... But I can already imagine I would start getting contact requests from various different Biotamer families looking to, as Nerissa would put it, breed me.

I crossed my arms at him, "The nests we cleared were not as big as this one. And we took advantage of the fact that killing the Queen would kill the rest of the bugs within the nest. Now that we don’t know if that is possible anymore with this nest, I’m not going to risk putting my crew in danger to test that out."

The General cocked an eyebrow, "Even with a hundred dogs at your disposal?"

"Especially when we have a hundred dogs with us."

I mean... We don’t really need to worry about them since I have full control over the dogs but to the people here, they should think that the dogs were just one hair’s breath away from turning their attacks on us while we descend into the tunnels with them.

General Rourke nodded in understanding, "That’s true, in that case... We do have a plan, but I’m not sure if you will agree to it..."

"Let’s hear it."

He turned his gaze towards the tunnel entrance, "The main problem is the fact that those damned bugs blocked off the tunnels and made it too small for our vehicles to move through them. But they couldn’t do it for their entire tunnel system of course, just the area near the entrance. So what I propose is that you and your team enter the tunnel and push into the tunnel to stop them from coming up to the entrance, allowing our miners to dig out the parts of the tunnel that they have stuffed with dirt to make space for our tanks and mechs."

Hmm... That might actually work.

I nodded, "That sounds like an idea. We will descend into the tunnels with the dogs and push the bugs back into the tunnels until we reach a crossroad. Then we will hold there until you finish clearing the blockage."

He shook his head, "Actually... We will send in men with you to set up a defensive line inside the tunnel. You just need to push into the tunnel and force the bugs back. This had been our initial plan to hold key positions within the tunnels but we did not manage to set those blockades up before the bugs overwhelmed us with their numbers. Once the blockades are set up, they will be able to hold those positions while you continue into the tunnels. There is something else that we need you to do."

I raised an eyebrow, "What else do you need aside from killing those bugs?"

"It’s exactly that, but more..."

He tapped on the console in front of him, bringing up what looked to be a holographic projection of the tunnels.

The entrance went down at a diagonal angle for a good few hundred metres before it branched out into multiple paths.

I realised that this nest was an entire labyrinth and from what I can see... This map wasn’t even completed.

"How did you get this mapped out?" I asked.

"Drones that we sent in to scan the tunnels. The bugs ignored the drones at first but when they got deeper in, they encountered those humanoid looking bugs and they seemed to know the drones were threats and stopped them from going any further by destroying them. We have yet to find where the heart of their nest is, unfortunately."

"Right... I can see that... So what did you want me to do?"

He tapped on the console again and a few red dots appeared on the map, all of them clustered near the entrance of the tunnel which branched out from the first intersection.

"Our plan had been to establish a solid front line and hold the intersections with mounted turrets and establish bases that we can use to secure a supply line while the assault teams explored the tunnels to eradicate the bugs. We managed to push in through the first wave and thought that we were able to drive them back to a retreat and we had time to set these positions up as a defensive line... But the bugs had been gathering up and pushed through the main intersection to flush us back to the tunnel entrance before we could secure it."

A screen popped up to show what I’m guessing was a POV camera from one of the soldiers in the main intersection looking at a swarm of bugs charging straight towards them from the darkness before he turned tail and ran.

The General pointed to the red dots that were linked to the main intersection, "The bugs had intentionally ignored the other intersections so that they could focus their push through the main tunnel, which means that these other outposts might have managed to set up their defenses and are now stuck down there unable to return. They don’t have unlimited ammunition so I want you to head over to these places to check on them and resupply them if they need it. You will be accompanied by the supply drones that will bring them the supplies they need."

I read between the lines and knew he was basically asking me to go there to check if those people at the red dots were still alive and whether they needed saving.

Honestly, I would be surprised if they were still alive but I guess it doesn’t hurt to check.

"Understood. In that case, I shall set off immediately," I announced, moving to stand up.

The general raised his hand, "Wait... I want you to prioritise this group in particular... There’s... High value assets within that group that need to be secured."

One of the red dots turned golden and I received a ping on my Codex, no doubt it was the map being sent to me.

The odd thing was that this outpost was the only one that wasn’t located on an intersection but at the end of a tunnel instead.

The General continued, "Check on that team and if the outpost has already been overrun or destroyed, leave that place immediately and do not approach that place."

Err... Sounds sus but ok I guess?

Let’s get to work then.
