Chapter 872: I’m Gonna Cook For A Dragon
Chapter 872: I’m Gonna Cook For A Dragon
Well... I shouldn’t be surprised... But yeah... The food here is nice enough to eat but I can’t shake off the feeling that it’s missing something...
It was the same with Merina’s cooking so it honestly wasn’t really that surprising...
I guess my lack of a reaction must have made Vieretha realised that something was amiss as she gave me a pointed look, "Was the food not to your liking, Lady Tera?"
I briefly considered lying to her but the Dragon woman was staring at me so intensely that I had a feeling that she would instantly figure it out even if I were to lie.
Thus, I just let out a sigh instead, "Well... To be honest... It could be better..."
I noticed the chef tense up out of the corner of my eye, right before all the colour seemed to drain out from her face.
On the other hand, Vieretha looked like someone just told her that something had just ruined her soup that she had left to simmer for hours or something.
Vieretha then slowly turned her head towards the chef and even without anyone saying anything, the girl had already rushed out from behind the counter to prostrate herself in front of Vieretha.
"Lady Iceborne! I did my very best, I swear! I did not cut any corners! Please believe me!"
What’s going on?
Vieretha didn’t say anything to her and reached out her hand towards her.
I didn’t feel comfortable with this sight and I felt that if I didn’t say anything here, the chef girl might actually lose her life.
"Wait," I called out, surprisingly causing Vieretha to freeze in place.
She turned her head to look back at me and tilted her head slightly, as though asking me why I had stopped her.
"She’s telling the truth. The fault does not lie with her," I continued.
Vieretha did not respond to what I said immediately and just remained just staring at me from across the table and needing quite a while before she managed to recover.
"What do you mean?" She asked.
I gestured at the food that we had just eaten, "If you were to get another similar chef with the same competency as her to prepare the food, the result would have been the same as well. I said that it could be better because I was aware of what is the norm for this type of meal and I have tasted something better and another that is equivalent to the quality that she has presented here before, so I know that she has done what she is expected to do. It is not a fault of hers."
I even had to repeat the last part to assure her that it was not her fault because I wasn’t sure what Vieretha was trying to do to the girl.
The girl was even shooting me a grateful look and I think I just saved her life as Vieretha eventually pulled back her arm.
"I see... That’s interesting... Leave us," Vieretha commanded while looking at the chef.
The woman let out an audible sigh of relief before she quickly sped off without another word, not willing to stay around to see if the woman in front of me changed her mind.
Did she really intend to kill her or something over this? Guess I’ll never know.
Vieretha turned back to me and that oppressive feeling earlier dissipated as a smile appeared on her face again.
"To think that Lady Tera is able to cook as well~ Which cooking school did you go to? Maybe it is one of mine?"
I paused.
"Wait... What did you just say?" I asked.
"Hmm? I asked if you might have attended one of the cooking schools that is under my management? I have a few of them within the Inner Colonies here."
I blinked again before pointing in the direction of where the girl had fled, "Could she have... Perhaps... Been a graduate at one of your schools?"
"Of course. Why wouldn’t I source for workers that have been molded in my own places of education?"
I sucked in a breath, "I’m afraid... The reason why the food felt inadequate is tied to the school."
Vieretha frowned slightly, "Is that so... Very well, I shall proceed to remove that school from existence right this instance."
Ok... For some reason... When she said remove that school from existence, I get the feeling that she wasn’t just talking about closing down the school but actually literally wiping it from existence like how someone would fire an orbital laser to wipe something off the map kind of removing...
I raised my hand again, "Wait, wait, wait! While it is the school’s fault for teaching her, it is not because of that one school that is the problem! It’s the entire history and the culture behind it that has led to most if not all cooking schools perpetuating an idea of cooking that is entirely inadequate. Also... Why are you trusting me so easily? Do you not think that maybe I’ve been lying all this while?"
She tilted her head at me, "Were you lying to me, Lady Tera?"
"Well... No? But you didn’t know that, right?"
"Hmm... I did not get the feeling that Lady Tera was lying that’s why I trusted you."
"I mean... I was fully expecting you to ask me to show you that I know what I’m talking about by preparing some food for you or something..."
She gasped, "Will Lady Tera cook for me? Oh my! That is wonderful! If you don’t mind, I would very much like to partake in something that was made personally by Lady Tera!"
Well... I already thought that it would come to this so I wasn’t really surprised...
I made the action of rolling up my sleeves and walked over to the counter before gesturing towards it, "I can use this right?"
Vieretha immediately dragged her chair over so that she could sit directly in front of it to watch me, "Please go ahead~"
SinceI have permission from the owner of this place...
I went over to the same wall where the panel had appeared earlier and a screen popped up right as I got close to it, showing me several windows that had various different ingredients waiting to be picked.
I licked my lips as I scrolled through the list, realising that there was a huge variety of stuff to be chosen here.
From fish to red meat to fruits and vegetables... All of them would be delivered to the counter with a press of my finger~
I quickly picked a few of them, including some pieces of fish since I also plan to make food for my girls and Ries would definitely want to have some fish as well.
The moment I was done, the counter top slid open and the food I ordered appeared there, all arranged neatly and waiting for me.
The fact that it got delivered this quickly meant there must be some kind of automated process here that sorts the food and delivers it.
That’s cool~
I then went ahead to start preparing the ingredients under the watchful gaze of everyone in the room, which included Vieretha, her bodyguards and also my girls.
Ironically, I could feel that only one out of the three mentioned groups was watching me warily to make sure I wasn’t going to screw up making the food or attempt to poison it.
Since everyone was watching me so closely, I decided to put on a show for them as well and try to do my usual performance on the teppan grill.
But the moment I tried to do a flip with my spatula, there was a loud ’bang’ and I found the utensil being struck and deflected out of the air to clatter onto the ground a short distance away from me.
I looked in the direction of the sound to see that one of Vieretha’s bodyguards, a red Dragonling, had pulled out his gun to shoot in my direction, his bullet having struck the spatula that I had thrown into the air.
So these guys are allowed to keep their guns... I guess that makes sense. It would be stupid if they were disarmed as well and needed to fight against intruders while unarmed.
He still had his gun up and was pointing it at me while he cried out, "Lady Iceborne! Please get down!"
Instead of listening, the black Dragonling turned to narrow her eyes at her bodyguard, "What... Do you think... You’re doing?"
The guy froze up before he stuttered, "That... She was doing something suspicious... She might be after your life..."
The same oppressive feeling she was giving out earlier with the chef appeared again and I could see all the bodyguards tense up and avert their gaze.
I cleared my throat, "Ahem, sorry. I suppose I should have explained earlier. It’s my fault. I will be doing a performance with the utensils here so there’s no need for you to be alarmed. Please don’t blame him, Lady Iceborne."
She turned back to me and pouted a little, "If that is what Lady Tera says... But please, call me Vier~"
The bodyguards all sucked in a breath collectively when they heard that.
Err... Maybe I shouldn’t call her so casually?
Whatever, I’m just going to cook now.
