Chapter 955: Deeper Into The Bug Hole
Chapter 955: Deeper Into The Bug Hole
I sliced through another bug with my halberd, cutting it in half without mercy.
As I got closer to the end of the cavern, I realised there’s another tunnel that was much bigger in size compared to all the other tunnels around the cavern and most of the bugs were pouring through that tunnel to try and stop us.
There was no doubt that whatever was in that tunnel was something important to them and they needed to stop me from reaching it at all cost.
I doubt they would be able to since we’ve really just slaughtered our way through this entire cavern at this point and the area behind us was just filled with the corpses of the bugs.
Even those beetle bugs with their big arms got torn to shreds by the dogs and me, none of them even being able to remotely slow us down at all.
Needless to say, the dogs have suffered no casualties so far and they were even smart enough to rotate themselves out as they split themselves up into waves to deal with the bugs.
One wave would advance and tear into the bugs and once they’ve advanced a set distance, they pull back and allow another wave to take over so that they could take a break.
As for me... I was quite surprised to find that I wasn’t tired even after cutting my way through this many bugs.
Then again, I was also making use of my Psionic powers to crush and smash them just as much as I was using my halberd to slice through them.
I raised my shotgun to blast another of those beetle bugs in the head before crushing a red cockroach bug with my telekinesis. I stabbed my halberd through the head of one of those scythe bugs as it tried to slash at me, tossing its corpse into another crowd of bugs and knocking them over like bowling pins.
As I got closer to the tunnel, the tide of bugs suddenly stopped rushing at us and turned to retreat into the tunnel, like they had given up trying to stop us and were now focused on trying to run away.
I frowned at the sight, wondering what triggered such a reaction.
Sure, it wasn’t the first time that I saw them run away but this didn’t feel like they were running away from me but... Like they were simply withdrawing to allow something else to take their place.
As though to prove me right, I spotted a black coloured bug that also looked humanoid except that it was sleek and thin instead of being big and muscular like the those beetle bugs.
It had four arms and they were resting against its sides casually while it walked towards me.
The dogs were gathered behind me, all of them growling at the newcomer and baring their fangs at it.
The pressure coming from this specific bug felt a little greater than the other bugs and I was just about to wonder if it would be a good idea to kill the bug before it could do anything when it disappeared from my vision.
I blinked and the bug was suddenly in front of me, two of its arms raised to show that its fingers ended in razor sharp claws.
I was going to raise my halberd to intercept it but a dog suddenly appeared in front of me, headbutting the bug in the chest and sending it flying back like it had been hit by a truck instead.
The humanoid bug skidded to a stop several feet away and the dog that had protected me landed in front of me, revealing itself to be a corgi that barked at the bug while trying to look threatening despite the fact that it was standing on its short, stubby legs.
So cute.
The bug straightened itself, dusting its carapace like it was no big deal, which was actually pretty impressive that it managed to remain standing despite receiving a blow from a dog since they have shown to be able to smash through those armoured bugs with ease.
It clicked its mandibles audibly as though in amusement, looking down at the corgi that had protected me.
It then raised its arms as though getting ready to leap towards the corgi to slice it apart, only to suddenly freeze in place.
I could tell that it was confused as it tried to strain itself to move, only to realise that no matter how it struggled, it remained stuck in place.
Well... I’ve already seen how fast it was so I wasn’t taking any other chances and froze it in place with my telekinesis.
I then went ahead to rip its head off unceremoniously before letting its corpse collapse onto the ground with a dull thud.
Yeah... As fast as you might be, your speed has no use if you get caught like this.
Seeing the bug dead, the corgi turned back to pant at me so I went ahead to give it a headpat before leading the way into the large tunnel where the rest of the bugs had withdrawn into.
As I descended, I realised that these tunnels seemed to be naturally formed since there were also Prisma crystals lining up the tunnel walls and they were uneven and had multiple twists and turns unlike the other tunnels we had seen so far which were obviously dug out by these bugs.
We descended deeper underground and the echoes of the bugs skittering around could be heard coming from deeper within.
Judging by the sounds, I’m pretty sure they were preparing for something and not just running away so I kept my guard up.
Sure enough, I saw movement to the side and turned just in time to see what looked like a shimmering figure leap off the tunnel walls to dive towards me.
I sliced my halberd and cleaved it into two, revealing it to be another of those scythe bugs except it had a dark carapace that made it almost invisible on the tunnel walls.
These were probably some kind of assassin bugs or something, meant to ambush prey inside the caverns.
More figures shimmered on the walls and they jumped towards me en masse, revealing the trap that they had laid out for us as some of them also leapt towards the dogs from behind.
I sliced through the assassin bugs that had tried to jump at me and looked behind, worried that the dogs might be hurt.
I should have expected this but the assassin bugs that aimed for the dogs were pounced on and ripped to shreds without being able to do anything at all, almost like the dogs already knew they were there before they even moved.
Well... They are dogs after all... They probably smelt them as soon as they entered but didn’t bother with them because they weren’t a threat at the time.
We descended even deeper, dealing with assassin bugs as they kept jumping at us from all around the tunnels like it would make a difference despite already failing.
Right then, I heard a rumbling sound coming from behind and I turned to see a large boulder rolling down towards us.
The bugs even know how to make traps like these?
I was just about to stop the boulder with my telekinesis when one of the dogs leapt at it and slashed it with her claws.
There was a wet slicing sound and I realised the boulder wasn’t even a boulder at all. It was the armoured bug that had curled itself into the shape of a ball to try and crush us with its body.
The bug split into pieces and collapsed short of us, not even able to reach us with it.
I then turned back to head deeper into the tunnel, slicing another assassin bug out of the air and cleaving it in half.
For the bugs to resort to such tricks at this point suggests they might actually be desperate.
But that was weird since they should at least still have a large number of them remaining even though we’ve slaughtered so many inside the cavern.
When we were descending to the planet, we could see the entire area covered with them with no end of the horde pouring out of the burrows.
The area they occupied was way bigger than the space of the cavern so there’s no way they had retreated because they just lost a small number to us.
I was still wondering about that when the tunnel came to an abrupt end at the edge of what looked like a cliff with a sheer drop.
Standing at the edge of the cliff was another bug which also looked like the humanoid bug we saw at the tunnel entrance except this one was even smaller and thinner, making it human sized.
I was just about to kill it with telekinesis when it turned around and a low guttural sound came from its mandibles.
"Wrryyy... Hafff... Yewwww... Crummmmbbbb?"
...
What the fuck?
