Chapter 998: Confronting The Overseer
Chapter 998: Confronting The Overseer
Ok... So... I left with Ries and Vier to deal with that potential collab with that SonicSlayer guy while we focused on the station overseer guy first.
My girls were all riled up after I told them the overseer was back and they looked like they were arming up to dive into another bug nest instead of just going to confront some random bureaucrat.
We went through the plan on how we would want to settle this with him with Justin earlier.
We would wait until he returned to the administration tower where he would be expected to address the crowd to express his sympathy over our apparent deaths.
Then when that happens, we pop up and then expose him right in front of everyone, destroying his credibility and standing in a single move.
After that... We can drag him off and... Well... Do whatever we want with him, according to Justin.
Well... Honestly, that last part was what my girls forced out of him... Since they were all glaring at him until he gave them what they wanted.
I very wisely stepped aside and just let my girls do whatever they wanted, even though I would say I was the main victim in all of this.
We moved ourselves back to the main lobby of the administration tower, where I could still see the corridor that led to the safe room cordoned off with scorchmarks still remaining on the walls.
And there he was, at least I believe it was him, since there was a single guy that was dressed in quite gaudy clothing standing on top of a podium and looking like he was trying to be more important than he really was.
He actually looked... Kind of cool looking, not gonna lie.
He was dressed in a black suit with a long jacket hung over his shoulders and his short black hair was slicked back to show off his arguably handsome face. The only downside about him, which I think some might actually think was a charm point instead, was that the left side of his face was cybernetic implants starting from his left eye and going down to his left cheek, the chromed metal standing out on his pale face.
There was a small crowd gathered in front of him which I noted consisted of more filming crew and security than actual members of the public.
In fact, I’m pretty sure that the group of people at the front of the crowd were just planted there by him to act like he had the public’s support.
We have not revealed ourselves yet as we followed Justin towards the back of where the crowd was gathered, moving between the shadows as we headed to the position that would give us the biggest reveal, where the cameras could easily see us once we announced ourselves.
The overseer was still acting his part, giving a ’heartfelt’ speech and expressing his regret for the loss of lives in this incident.
"It is with such great regret that such a tragedy happened. If only I had been here, I would have been able to organise the security of the event better and ensured that such a disaster never happened. But alas, the former Chief of Security, Justin Accer, had been so eager to claim credit for the event that he was so sloppy and allowed such a disaster to happen. It is such a shame that our great USC has lost such a great heroine before she could shine brightly amongst the stars."
Seriously, that speech made a shiver go down my spine and even I felt like punching him in the face for all the bullshit he had just spouted.
Well... Good thing we didn’t need to hear anymore because...
Justin stepped forward, appearing right at the edge of the platform where the lights from the filming crew were using to light up the stage.
"You don’t need to worry, for the heroine that you are praising has not perished in your attempt to assassinate her."
The lights and cameras panned over to Justin, revealing the Security Chief alive and well.
The station overseer goggled at him, clearly not expecting to see him alive. Then his eyes widened even more when he realised that I was right behind him as I stepped up to reveal myself as well.
"I... I thought you were dead?" He gasped.
I shrugged, "The news of my death... Had been blown out of proportions."
The overseer was looking between Justin and me, panic clear on his face as he was obviously trying to figure out a way to turn things around for himself.
He seemed to have thought of something as he quickly straightened himself and ran his fingers through his hair, combing them back even more while shooting us a smirk.
"Ah, I see now. So this whole farce was made by you, Head of Security, Justin. You plotted the entire attempt on our dear heroine’s life just to make yourself look like a hero right? After all, you were taking advantage of my absence from the station to do this so you can discredit me, but things didn’t go your way, did it? Your assassination plan went off rails because she got too close to the blast and then you had to change your plan and make it look like you’re a victim too!"
Oh wow... I’m more impressed that he could actually come up with such bullshit on the fly... Guess he was not the Station Master for nothing... He probably has to deal with all the bullshitting from the bureaucracy and politics on a daily basis.
Justin didn’t even look surprised and neither did he look threatened by his accusations as he just let the guy finish his spiel before he took out his personal terminal.
He tapped on it a few times before a screen was projected in front of him, showing what looked like a recording of a room that the overseer himself was occupying and Justin was standing in front of him.
"Station Master Docius! The Leviathan is heading towards the station! We have to evacuate the place! Please give the evacuation order!!" The Justin in the recording shouted.
The Station Master, who I now know was Docius, waved a hand dismissively at him, "Bah! What’s the rush? Have everyone fight against the Leviathan. That’s what you lowlifes are good for, right? Why else would you all be kept around the station? Have all the riff raffs grab a weapon and send them out into space to shoot at the Leviathan. That should do it. In the meantime, I shall be away."
"You mean to run away while we face the monster alone?! Even if you want the Mercs to help, we need to prepare funds for the--"
"Don’t you dare!! That’s my Credits!! You have no right to touch them!!"
"That’s the station’s administrative funds! It’s not your personal--"
"Another word out of you, Security Chief and I will have you shot for insubordination! Deal with this yourself. The security of this station is your responsibility is it not?"
Justin then tapped on his screen, cutting off the recording.
But he was not done yet as he swiped across the screen, letting another video appear in front of the first one.
This one seemed to be showing a recording of the overseer inside a room on board his ship, judging by the window nearby that showed the stars streaking past.
"Yes, I will not be humiliated like this! To think they could actually stop the Leviathan... I would be a laughing stock! I want them all dead! That stupid person who killed the Leviathan and the Security Chief as well! Use any means necessary! I don’t care who else gets involved! Blow them all up if you have to!"
The video stopped and then Justin raised his hand to beckon to some of his men that were off to the side, prompting them to enter into the frame as well while ignoring the overseer who was getting paler by the second.
In front of those guards were a few people who were placed in handcuffs who were forced to kneel in front of us.
Justin turned to them, "Tell them what you told us."
The guy in the middle shuddered, "We... We were just ordered by him... To prepare the bombs... He said he would kill our families if we didn’t do it... We had no choice... Mercy, please..."
"Lies!!" The overseer shouted, pointing an accusatory finger at the prisoner. "He’s clearly trying to besmirch my name! And those videos... They’re all out of context!!"
Oh wow... This guy really is a politician for him to be able to come up with all that reasoning on the fly...
Justin once again did not look surprised by this as if he had seen it all before.
"Then is this also out of context?"
He swiped the screen once again, this time showing a recording of the prisoner and the overseer meeting at the docking bay of the station.
"We... We fulfilled our work, Station Master! They are all dead as you saw! We blew up the safe room with them in it! Please don’t hurt my family!"
"Hmph! I suppose even lowlifes like you can do decent work from time to time. I’ll tell my men to release your family once I do my speech. Ha! That bitch can kill a Leviathan but can’t survive a bomb! Serves her right!"
Well... I really don’t know how he can justify his way out of this one...
