Chapter 1185, An Existence Above the Ancient Gods

These words were spoken, and suddenly, silence fell between the two Ancient Gods.

The Slaughter Ancient God vaguely felt a chill creeping up behind him. Nevertheless, he chose to ignore it and, steeling himself, said, “What else would we be?”

“The Divine Seats we carry are the supreme and paramount power of this world. So long as one endures the cleansing transition of an era, kills every other Ancient God, and solely claims the world’s power, they will be able to break it apart and reshape it to open a new era altogether.”

“This power that governs the world naturally stands above all other powers. If you and I are not the masters of this world, then who else could be?”

The Fallen Corpse Ancient God let out a *ha ha*, then said, “Once upon a time, my thinking was exactly the same as yours. I believed that since you and I are Ancient Gods, we must naturally be the supreme existences of this world, beyond anyone’s power to govern our lives and deaths. But then, all of a sudden, I began to feel things were not quite as simple. If you and I, as Ancient Gods, truly stand at the highest point of all creatures under Heaven, then from where did our Divine Seats come from?”

“This, this…” The Slaughter Ancient God was left speechless by the question, yet after a moment he stubbornly pressed on, “This question is far too tiresome.”

“Even with so much time having passed, with no telling how many eras we have lived through, you and I both know we are not the first-generation of Ancient Gods. Before us, other Ancient Gods existed. You and I seized their Divine Seats, and only thus became Ancient Gods ourselves.”

“The origins of Ancient God Divine Seats are too ancient, with absolutely no way to trace it. And with each era’s turning, all traces of the previous era got wiped away. I alone do not know how many hundreds of eras I have lived through. All added together, the time elapsed is no less than measured in the hundreds of millions of years. With time that ancient, how could one possibly trace the origin of our Divine Seats?”

“But it must have an origin, all the same, mustn’t it?” Said the Fallen Corpse Ancient God.

“…” The Slaughter Ancient God did not know how to answer. He simply chose to hold his tongue.

The Fallen Corpse Ancient God let out a long, quiet sigh. “The Humans of this era have long desired to discover the secret of the origin of their species. How the very first Human came to be, even they themselves do not know. But you and I both know the answer. Their existence came about through my hands. I opened a world and created its Principles. When those Principles began to operate, the creature called Humans appeared, and continued to evolve, giving rise to the scale of civilization that exists today.”

“If they could trace it back to the source, they would know that their origin lies with the Ancient Gods. But if neither you nor I had ever revealed ourselves, could they ever have known the origin of their species?”

“Of course not!” Said the Slaughter Ancient God. “If you and I never presented ourselves, Humans would naturally never know that their origins were created by Ancient Gods.”

“And there, precisely, is the problem,” said the Fallen Corpse Ancient God. “You and I are no different from them. Our gaze is short, and we cannot see our own origins. If the existence that created you and I never reveals itself, we would likely have assumed that the 36 Ancient God Divine Seats simply appeared out of thin air, rather than from the hands of some being.”

“Hang on, this line of thinking of yours…” The Slaughter Ancient God felt the hairs on his back standing on end with increasing urgency.

“I truly cannot agree with a single word of it. I genuinely cannot imagine that there would exist in this world an existence standing above Ancient Gods such as you and I.”

“*Ha ha ha…* Perhaps the Humans who have only just learned of our existence harbour the same thoughts as you.” The Fallen Corpse Ancient God gave a mocking smile and said with a jab, “You and I, Ancient Gods who stand above all creation, are in reality nothing more than just another member of the masses of living things. We constantly mock Humans and other creatures for their short-sightedness. In reality, are we ourselves any different?”

“You…” The Slaughter Ancient God felt his mind thrown into turmoil, and simply chose to stop thinking about it. He refused to acknowledge that he was, exactly as the Fallen Corpse Ancient God described, as short-sighted as any Human.

“What does any of this have to do with Giant Dragons? Surely you are not going to tell me that they were not created by you, but by some existence that stands above us?”

The Fallen Corpse Ancient God said, “As a matter of fact, that is precisely my thinking.”

“In this era, only Giant Dragons possess power that surpasses the shackles I’ve set. They therefore do not belong in the world I created. My conjecture is that the so-called Giant Dragons are not my handiwork, but the creation of a far more terrifying existence. I do not know what purpose these existences had in creating such a species. Whether it was deliberate, or merely a passing whim, fashioning a creature and tossing it into my world by chance.”

“If the latter, then it matters little. With the strength you and I possess, slaughtering every last Giant Dragon is still within our means. But if it is the former, then we Ancient Gods may well be in grave danger.”

“How so?” The Slaughter Ancient God did not understand.

The Fallen Corpse Ancient God said with a cold laugh, “In your view, if there truly exists an existence standing above us, one that has placed a creature of Combat Power comparable to ours into this world, what would be the purpose? To assist us in cleansing this era? The ones Giant Dragons wish to cleanse, is it truly the other living creatures of this era, or is it us Ancient Gods? Can you not work that out?”

*Siii…* The Slaughter Ancient God drew in a sharp breath of cold air. “You mean, the existence of Giant Dragons is for the purpose of eliminating us?!”

“It is highly likely!” The Fallen Corpse Ancient God gave a nod. “This, very possibly, is the mission of Giant Dragons.”

“As things currently stand, Giant Dragons as a species do not themselves know what their mission is. They still believe themselves to be nothing more than one species among the creatures of this world. But, I have spotted a variable. It is very possible that this variable is the crucial factor that will drive Giant Dragons to hunt down and kill us Ancient Gods one by one.”

With so clear a hint, the Slaughter Ancient God understood the meaning in the Fallen Corpse Ancient God’s words. He said with suspicion, “You are referring to that young man who nearly killed me? He is able to control Giant Dragons, and so he is the key to using Giant Dragons to wipe out the Ancient Gods!?”

The Fallen Corpse Ancient God said, “I believe that is likely to be the case. This reasoning is something I only recently worked out for myself. Had I realised this earlier, I would have done anything to kill him the moment I made contact with him!”
