Chapter 444: Absorbing Powers
Chapter 444: Chapter 444: Absorbing Powers
Frank’s eyes darkened. "What about absorbing their powers?"
His voice was sharp. "If the crystal is removed from a human’s head, can the power be taken?"
Cain shook his head slowly, regret evident in his posture.
"Compared to zombie crystals, human ones are far less effective." He sighed. "Worse still, if Hazel’s research is correct, we’d need a medium, a proper medium, to transfer those powers."
Frank studied him for a long moment before nodding. "You’ve uncovered something valuable."
A faint smile crept onto his face. "Keep bringing me information like this, and you’ll never regret choosing my side."
Cain rolled his eyes, unimpressed. "I’m not here for empty promises or shiny gold." He lifted his head. "I want something in return."
Frank frowned slightly. "And what would that be?"
Cain didn’t hesitate. "Firearms." His voice was calm but firm.
"Enough to loot more people." His gaze hardened.
"Many are already lined up to enter the SiIvy Base, but they’re not inside yet. We can target them."
A cold smile appeared. "Best case? We even loot the SiIvy Base staff and redistribute the food to those waiting in line."
Frank stiffened. He shook his head and spoke firmly,
"That approach is too risky." His fingers pressed against the edge of the table as if grounding himself. "You shouldn’t do it."
Cain burst out laughing, the sound sharp and careless, echoing against the cold walls.
He tilted his head, eyes glinting with amusement. "I never said I was asking for your approval." His smile widened mockingly. "I was only telling you what I plan to do."
He straightened, his voice turning colder. "You’re in no position to decide my actions."
Frank’s jaw tightened, irritation simmering beneath the surface.
’This man really doesn’t understand,’ he thought bitterly. He exhaled hard and snapped back, "I’m saying this so you don’t get yourself killed and drag me down with you."
Frank’s patience finally snapped. His hand shot forward, finger pointing straight at Cain, his chest rising and falling rapidly.
"You’re being completely reckless." His voice shook, not with fear, but with barely restrained anger.
Cain smirked, utterly unfazed, and that expression alone was enough to ignite Frank’s fury.
His eyes burned as he shot back,
"If you were even smart enough to think this through properly, you’d realize how dangerous this is." He took a step closer, his tone cutting like a blade.
"If the SiIvy Base finds out you’re pulling moves like this, they won’t hesitate." His finger curled into a fist. "They’ll settle the score by wiping out your little base first."
Cain laughed as though he had just heard the most ridiculous joke, the sound ringing oddly hollow in the dim room.
He leaned back, completely relaxed, and spoke in an almost gentle tone, "As long as I have the military backing me, I don’t have to fear anything... especially not their warnings."
The moment those words left Cain’s mouth, Frank’s eyes widened in disbelief.
His gaze flicked instinctively toward Cain, his heart skipping for a brief second.
’So this is why he’s acting so arrogant,’ Frank thought.
For a fleeting moment, he even suspected that Cain had devised some solid, hidden plan.
But the longer he observed Cain’s smug expression, the clearer it became that Cain was simply relying on the military base, despite knowing full well how chaotic and unstable the military had become lately.
Cain turned back to Frank, his expression darkening slightly.
"I’ve already given you information valuable enough to change the future," he continued coldly.
"And yet you’re still unwilling to support me." His lips curled faintly.
"In that case, you can forget about receiving any important information from me in the future."
Hearing this, Frank forced himself to calm down.
He drew a slow breath, the tension in his shoulders easing just enough for him to think clearly.
’I can’t afford to lose him right now,’ he admitted reluctantly.
Cain’s research team was far too advanced.
Otherwise, they wouldn’t have uncovered so much while everyone else was still struggling to survive the apocalypse.
With that realization, Frank decided not to completely sever ties.
He turned to Cain with a faint, practiced smile and spoke smoothly,
"I may have sounded harsh earlier." His tone softened deliberately.
"I was only trying to persuade you. I don’t want you to end up in serious trouble." He paused, choosing his words carefully.
"It’s true that the military will support you." His eyes sharpened. "But it’s also true that you might not survive long enough to see that reinforcement arrive."
Cain blinked, confusion flickering across his face. Frank continued,
"The military was strong, yes, but that was three months ago... no, even two months ago... the situation now is different."
His voice lowered.
"Now, the average strength of the SiIvy base has risen by an entire rank, surpassing the military itself."
He shook his head. "Confronting them head-on would be nothing but stupidity."
Cain, who had been silent until now, shot Frank a faintly disdainful look.
On the other hand, Frank struggled to suppress the anger boiling beneath his skin, his fingers curling slightly before he relaxed them.
He continued evenly, "What I’m proposing is this: instead of acting openly under the Black Vulture’s banner, we use it to create friction between different factions."
Cain’s eyes finally lit up with interest. Frank pressed on,
"What if we attack under the name of another base?" His voice dropped conspiratorially. "The SiIvy Base will hold someone else accountable, while we reap the benefits."
Cain nodded slowly, a thoughtful hum escaping him.
"That can be done." He glanced at Frank with a crooked smile. "You’re not as stupid as you look."
Frank felt a nervous twitch threaten to surface, anger flashing through him, but he forced it down and smiled instead.
"I provide valuable suggestion." His voice was calm, almost confident. "As long as you listen to me, you’ll never have to worry about the future."
Cain nodded again, his confidence visibly growing.
By the time the meeting ended, he left with his head held high, convinced that he could conquer anything he desired.
