Chapter 613: Blane
Chapter 613: Chapter 613: Blane
Blane.
Before the apocalypse, he had lived alone, tucked away in an isolated corner of the world. Quiet. Invisible. Forgotten.
Even after everything began, his life barely changed. Until it did. Extreme heat came first. He survived.
Then came the cold. A biting, merciless cold that froze everything it touched. He survived that too.
’Maybe I’m just lucky...’ he had thought back then.
But luck has limits. When the rains came...they didn’t stop.
The water rose rapidly, swallowing everything in its path.
Blane was caught in it. The current dragged him violently, the cold water choking his lungs as he struggled to stay afloat.
’I... can’t...’ his mind screamed as he fought to swim.
Then...he saw it, a place untouched by the flood. Safe. Stable. Hope.
Summoning the last of his strength, he swam toward it. But fate twisted cruelly.
A single mistake. He swallowed contaminated water. The infection spread instantly. His body convulsed. His vision blurred.
And before he could reach safety...he turned into a zombie. As darkness consumed him, a single thought echoed weakly,
’If only... I had one more chance...’
.....................
When he opened his eyes again...he was human. Voices surrounded him.
"You’re safe now."
He was told that soldiers had brought him to SiIvy base. Blane stared blankly at the ceiling, his chest rising and falling unevenly.
’...I lived?’
Emotion surged within him so suddenly it almost broke him. He wanted to cry. But he didn’t.
From that moment on...he changed. He became one of the most loyal soldiers in the base. He joined rescue missions without hesitation.
Risk didn’t matter anymore. ’If I fall again... they’ll save me again,’ he believed.
And that belief made him fearless.
Meanwhile, Ivy stood reviewing reports, her expression focused yet slightly tense.
Footsteps approached. She looked up and saw Jade. For a brief moment, her eyes hardened.
But then...she noticed his expression, not filled with arrogance or love-sick boy but looking lost.
"What is it?" she asked.
Jade clenched his fists, his jaw tightening. "I want to make a deal."
Ivy let out a short chuckle, turning slightly away. "I don’t need anything from you. You can leave."
"Wait." His voice stopped her. "There’s something I can give you... something you’ll definitely want."
Ivy’s expression turned cold.
"If this is about that soulmate nonsense again..." she said sharply, "I’m not interested."
Jade shook his head immediately.
"I know how it sounds," he said quickly. "And yes... I was going to talk about that."
He took a breath. "But this is different."
Ivy didn’t respond. Jade’s grip tightened further. "Last night... I had a vision."
His voice dropped. "And it wasn’t normal."
Ivy’s eyes flickered slightly. "...What did you see?"
Jade swallowed. "I saw myself... in another world."
The air seemed to grow still. "A world with two moons... hanging in the sky."
His voice trembled faintly. "The technology there... it was far beyond anything here."
Ivy’s expression slowly turned serious. ’Another planet...?’
Jade continued, "I didn’t understand it at first... but then I heard something."
He hesitated. "A couple... talking."
His gaze darkened slightly.
"They were talking about... the soulmate ball," Jade continued, his voice low.
Ivy remained silent, her eyes fixed on him, urging him to go on.
Jade swallowed lightly before continuing,
"They said... every person has one. A ball inside them... something like a reflection of their heart."
A faint crease formed on Ivy’s forehead.
"And this ’ball’..." he added, "...it shines when you meet your soulmate. Sometimes, it flickers," Jade went on, his gaze lowering slightly. "And when it does... people mistake it."
Ivy tilted her head slightly. "Mistake...?"
"Yes," he said quietly. "A boy and a girl might fall in love... thinking they’re meant for each other... just because their soulmate balls reacted."
His fingers tightened slowly. "But that doesn’t mean they’re truly compatible."
A faint bitterness slipped into his tone. "Sometimes, the connection... malfunctions."
Ivy’s eyes narrowed faintly. "And when that happens?" she asked.
"They drift apart," Jade replied. "Eventually... the truth surfaces."
He lifted his head again. "They use it again. Try again. Test again."
Ivy remained still, listening.
"Only after the second attempt..." Jade continued, "...do they usually find their real soulmate."
A faint pause followed.
"So no... a soulmate isn’t something fixed from the beginning," he said firmly. "That’s a lie."
"The soulmate ball... at best... only shows compatibility."
Silence fell. Jade’s gaze flickered briefly toward Silas.
"I understood that only after interacting with Silas and you," he said softly.
Then, after a brief pause, his voice dropped further. "And I also understood something else..."
His eyes darkened slightly. "How insecure Silas becomes... whenever that thing is mentioned."
Ivy’s expression didn’t change, but something faint shifted in her gaze.
’So... he noticed that too...’
Jade exhaled slowly, as if gathering courage. "That’s why I’m here today," he said.
He looked directly at Ivy. "To give you the answer you actually need. The soulmate ball, the one that can make Silas thrilled."
Ivy narrowed her eyes slightly, studying him carefully.
"And in return?" she asked calmly.
Jade’s body stiffened. His fists clenched so tightly that his knuckles turned pale.
For a moment, he closed his eyes. ’This... will make her hate me...’
The thought lingered heavily in his mind. He knew.
Whatever he was about to say... It would break whatever little trust remained.
But even so... he inhaled deeply, steadying himself. When he opened his eyes again, there was resolve in them.
"I want my father..."
He paused briefly, as if the words themselves were difficult to release.
"...to be set free."
Ivy heaved a sigh of relief secretly. She had thought that Jade would use her weakness to exploit her, but turns out... she was worrying for nothing.
However, she couldn’t agree right away because,
"What is the guarantee that he won’t plan another rebellion after being set free?"
It’s not like she couldn’t keep an eye on Frank, but honestly... she was tired of dealing with these mini villains who pop out of nowhere.
