Chapter 629: Isla
Chapter 629: Chapter 629: Isla
She had once planned to attack Ivy’s base, systematically destroying smaller ones to grow stronger.
Her army of zombies had evolved rapidly, their strength increasing at an alarming rate.
For a time, she had truly believed victory was within reach.
But then, the flood came.
A merciless wave that swallowed everything.
Her army was torn apart, some drowned, others simply... stopped, as though their souls had been severed from their bodies.
Isla clenched her fists, her jaw tightening. "This damn flood ..."
She waited, enduring, gathering what remained of her forces on the highest ground.
And then... she noticed something.
Not all of them had died.
Some zombies stood again, their movements steadier, their presence... different.
They were no longer affected by the water.
In fact, they controlled it.
Isla’s eyes lit up, a dangerous gleam forming within them.
"So even zombies... can awaken abilities...? "
A slow smile spread across her lips.
’If that’s the case... then I can make them even stronger ...’
Hope, twisted and ambitious, began to grow.
Days passed.
The rain weakened, then stopped completely.
Though the water still lingered, its level began to fall, inch by inch, as if the world itself were exhaling after a long torment.
Within a week, the skies cleared.
And with time, the waters finally returned to normal.
The moment Isla saw the land re-emerge, she rushed. Her remaining zombies lay scattered... some motionless forever, others slowly rising.
Among the fallen... were those who had drowned.
Isla tried to wake them, crouching beside one after another.
"Get up... move!"
But there was no reaction. Not even a twitch.
Her hand slowly loosened, slipping away as realization settled.
’They’re... all dead...’
Her jaw tightened, teeth grinding against each other as she rose to her feet.
She turned toward what remained of her army... barely ten thousand now.
Isla inhaled deeply, steadying herself.
"No more delays," she muttered under her breath. "If I wait any longer... who knows what disaster will come next ..."
Without hesitation, she raised her hand and gestured forward.
"Move. We’re heading to Ivy’s base. Now."
Soon, the structure of the base came into view.
The moment Isla sensed it, her steps slowed.
Her eyes narrowed.
"This barrier... it’s stronger than before ..."
A faint unease crept into her thoughts. ’Who exactly is Ivy...?’
Her fists clenched slightly.
’She has this much power... even back then... her parents said they had to abuse her so her bad luck wouldn’t spread... what kind of existence is she...?’
Shaking her head sharply, Isla forced those thoughts away. "Focus."
Her gaze hardened as she scanned the base, searching for any weakness.
"If there’s a barrier around it... then it must cover everything... right?"
She paused, then a faint smirk tugged at her lips. "Everything... except below."
Turning abruptly, she pointed at one of her zombies.
"You start digging."
The zombie obeyed immediately, clawing into the softened ground.
Soon, more joined in, their hands tearing through the wet soil as mud splattered in all directions.
Minutes turned into hours. Finally, the tunnel was complete.
Isla’s lips curled into a satisfied smile.
"Perfect..."
She crouched and entered, crawling through the narrow passage.
’I’m in... I’ve bypassed it ...’
When she finally emerged, she let out a low, triumphant laugh.
"I’m inside..."
Her voice cut off abruptly. Her expression froze. The base... was nowhere around her.
Instead, she stood on the opposite side. She had gone from the south... to the north.
But never entered the base. A heavy silence fell. "What...?"
Her brows furrowed deeply as she turned back toward the tunnel.
She glared at the zombie. "You... did you even dig this properly?!"
The zombie immediately shook its head vigorously, its stiff movements almost defensive.
Isla rolled her eyes, exhaling sharply. "What terrible luck..."
Clicking her tongue, she stepped forward. "Fine. I’ll do it myself."
Kneeling down, she began digging with her own hands, pushing deeper, faster, determined to break through.
But the moment she neared the base’s perimeter...a force stopped her. Invisible... yet absolute.
Her hand slammed against something unseen, a faint ripple spreading across the barrier.
Her eyes widened. "So it’s not just above ground ..."
She leaned back slowly, staring at the soil. "It covers underground too ..."
A humorless laugh escaped her lips. "What a... surprise. Ivy... you’re smarter than I thought."
She stood up, brushing dirt off her hands, her mind already racing for another plan.
But before she could think further...a scream echoed faintly in the distance.
Her head snapped up. "What now?"
Her eyes widened as she sensed it. Her army... was shrinking.
"Five thousand...?"
Her voice dropped. "No... one thousand...?!"
Panic flickered across her face as she scanned the surroundings.
Her zombies were disappearing... being taken.
’From inside the base...?!’
She clenched her fists tightly.
"How are they getting in...? And how are they entering normally...?"
Nothing made sense. Frustration surged within her. "Fine... if I can’t go in ..."
Her gaze sharpened. "I’ll use the ones already inside."
Closing her eyes, she reached out mentally, trying to establish a connection with the zombies within the base.
"Respond... all of you... cause chaos from within..."
Silence. Her connection... was gone. Completely severed. Her eyes snapped open.
"What?!"
A pulse of anger shot through her veins. "Something... cut it off ..."
She exhaled sharply, her chest rising and falling as irritation built up.
’Every solution... leads to another problem...’
Time passed, and with no immediate options left, she finally dropped onto a rock, her remaining thousand zombies standing silently around her.
"We need a new plan ..."
Her voice was quieter now, but sharper. Slowly, an idea formed. A dangerous one.
"One of you will act human."
Her lips curved slightly.
"You’ll collapse in front of the base... attract attention... and when they come close... we take a hostage."
She paused, glancing at her stiff, expressionless army.
’...Can they even act...?’
A sigh escaped her. "Whatever... we’ll make it work."
Using what little tools and knowledge she had, she began altering one zombie’s appearance, smearing dirt strategically, adjusting posture, masking its unnatural stiffness
