Chapter 659: Mutated Beast And Plants
Chapter 659: Chapter 659: Mutated Beast And Plants
Low murmurs. Then sharper sounds.
And suddenly... shrill cries of fear.
"What is that...?" someone whispered, their voice trembling.
The moment they saw what lay beyond the gates, every single one of them froze.
A chilling wave ran through their bodies.
It was as if their hearts had been gripped by an icy hand.
The plants... and the animals that had been thrown out moments ago... had changed.
No... they had transformed.
The plants were growing at an unnatural speed, their stems thickening, twisting, and stretching upward as if something inside them was forcing them to expand.
Their leaves darkened into a sickly shade, and faint, vein-like patterns pulsed across their surfaces.
Meanwhile, the animals...
Creatures that were once harmless and small, ones that could be held in a single hand, had now become monstrous.
Their bodies expanded grotesquely, muscles bulging unnaturally, bones cracking and reshaping with disturbing sounds.
Within seconds, they towered nearly three times the height of a normal human.
Their eyes glowed faintly.
People stumbled backward, pressing themselves tightly against the walls as if trying to disappear into them.
Some covered their mouths to stop themselves from screaming.
Others simply trembled.
Moona’s expression darkened, her jaw tightening as she watched the horrifying scene unfold.
’If those things had remained inside...’ the thought lingered, unfinished, yet terrifying enough to make her chest tighten.
She did not even want to imagine what would have happened if the guardian system had not expelled them in time.
At that same moment, far away... Ivy received the message.
She was still at Drake and Ronak’s base when the alert came through, detailing everything that had occurred.
As she read through it, her brows slowly furrowed.
Her eyes sharpened.
"So it has already begun..." she murmured under her breath.
Without wasting another second, she prepared to return.
However, before leaving, she did not forget her responsibilities.
Drake and Ronak’s base was still struggling with population overflow, survivors pouring in from every direction.
Ivy moved swiftly.
She constructed building after building, her abilities working at full capacity.
By the time she finished, nearly half of the remaining population in the country had found shelter.
Only then did she leave. Before she returned she ran into Logan.
The moment he saw her, his face lit up with genuine relief and happiness. He raised his hand and waved enthusiastically. "Miss Ivy! You’re back!"
Ivy paused for a brief moment and gave him a faint smile.
’He survived again...’ she thought quietly, a trace of warmth passing through her expression. ’He must truly be blessed.’
Logan seemed eager to talk, his lips parting as if he had a dozen things to say.
But duty called.
"I’ll catch up with you later!" he said quickly before rushing off.
Ivy watched him leave, her thoughts briefly drifting.
’How did he even manage to travel here during all this chaos?’ she wondered.
Traveling during the apocalypse was anything but easy... it was dangerous, unpredictable, and often deadly.
But she did not dwell on it for long. She teleported back to her own base.
The moment she arrived, she did not stop. She moved quickly toward the barracks.
But when she entered...it was empty.
A faint frown appeared on her face.
’Silas must have taken everyone to deal with the threat,’ she concluded immediately.
Without delay, she turned and rushed toward the outer battlefield.
The scene there was intense.
Silas stood at the forefront, surrounded by military forces, all engaged in a fierce battle against the mutated creatures.
The ground trembled with every heavy movement of the mutated beasts.
Ivy did not hesitate.
With her enhanced speed, she dashed forward. Within seconds, she joined the fight.
Drawing her dagger, she raised her voice, her tone firm and commanding.
"Listen carefully! Target the joints of the mutated animals... those are their weak points!"
Her voice carried across the battlefield.
"As for the plants," she continued, her eyes sharp, "burn their roots! That’s where their core lies!"
The soldiers responded immediately.
Fire-type superhumans surged forward, flames igniting in their hands as they attacked the roots.
Others with reinforced or metallic bodies rushed toward the beasts, striking at their joints with precision.
The tide of battle began to shift. The fight lasted nearly half an hour after Ivy’s arrival.
Finally... Silence. The last mutated creature fell.
Ivy stood still, looking at the fallen creatures.
A trace of pity appeared in her eyes.
’This... wasn’t supposed to happen yet,’ she thought. These mutations were meant to occur years later...at least seven years into the future.
But now... they had appeared far too early.
She let out a slow breath.
’I should have prepared more...’ she thought, a hint of regret surfacing. ’If I had stored these pets ... maybe we could have kept a trace of the old world.’
"Ivy!"
Silas approached quickly, his voice filled with concern.
He stopped in front of her, scanning her from head to toe. "Are you alright?" he asked, his tone softer now.
Ivy nodded lightly. "I’m fine," she replied before asking, "What about everyone else?"
Silas smiled reassuringly. "With all these soldiers around, what could possibly go wrong?"
Around them, people began to gather.
Those who had been hiding earlier slowly stepped forward, their fear replaced by relief and admiration. Some even started clapping.
The sound grew louder.
A few voices called out teasingly, "What a perfect pair!"
Ivy blinked, slightly startled. A faint blush crept onto her cheeks.
Silas chuckled, clearly amused.
He stepped closer and wrapped his arms around her lightly, burying his face near her neck.
"What can I do?" he murmured playfully. "My wife is getting more and more beautiful... I’m starting to feel insecure."
Ivy laughed softly. ’This guy... he really knows how to tease me,’ she thought, her mood lightening.
Soon, they returned inside.
Once they did, Ivy immediately shifted back into a serious state, preparing to investigate the incident in detail.
’This wasn’t random... this was planned,’ she thought, her expression tightening.
But before she could begin... Silas stopped her.
"You’re exhausted," he said gently. "You need rest first."
