Zombie Apocalypse: I Have Safe Zone Superpower

Chapter 760: Mason

Chapter 760: Chapter 760: Mason

Mason immediately put on an innocent expression. “What kind of report is it, General?”

A faint smile slowly appeared on Asher’s face.

Unfortunately for Mason, it was not a friendly smile. “Everything this lady told me…”

He tapped the report lightly. “…turned out to be true.”

His sharp gaze landed directly on Mason. “Do you have anything you’d like to say?”

For a brief moment, Mason’s pupils contracted. However, he quickly regained his composure.

He shook his head before looking toward Danielle. “I won’t say anything.”

He smiled bitterly.

“But, I’d like to say one thing to Danielle. If you still have even a little conscience left, then tell General the truth.”

Danielle slowly raised her head. Her voice was barely above a whisper. “I…”

She hesitated. “I do have a confession to make.”

Asher raised an eyebrow. “But before that…”

She looked toward Mason. “…I’d like to have a private conversation with him.”

Asher frowned slightly. “Be quick.”

He glanced at the pile of military documents waiting on his desk. “I don’t have much time. I still have an army to manage.”

Danielle immediately nodded. “Yes.”

For several minutes, Asher allowed the two of them to speak from a short distance away.

Although he couldn’t hear every word, one thing became increasingly obvious.

Mason’s expression was becoming uglier with every passing second.

His fists repeatedly clenched and unclenched. He looked as though he wanted to explode in rage.

Asher was just about to step forward when the conversation finally ended. Both of them returned.

Asher looked toward Danielle. “Well?”

Danielle took a deep breath before softly saying,

“Can you… give me two days? I need two days to decide whether I want to punish Mason.”

The moment those words fell, both Asher and Mason stared at her in astonishment. “What?”

Asher frowned deeply. Mason was equally stunned. Danielle lifted her head.

For the first time since they had met, there was determination in her eyes. “I won’t make any statement.”

She looked directly at Mason. “Not until I receive what I’m asking for.”

Mason immediately became flustered. He pointed angrily at Danielle before turning toward Asher.

“General! This woman only wants my money! You’re overestimating her. She’s an extremely cunning fox!”

Danielle immediately shook her head. “Sir…”

She looked at Asher earnestly. “I’m only trying to reach an understanding.”

Asher remained silent for several moments before finally speaking.

“Whatever your decision is, you only have two days.”

His voice became stern.

“If you take any longer than that, I’ll have no choice but to punish Mason according to military law.”

Hearing those words, Mason gritted his teeth so hard that his jaw visibly tightened.

He glared at Danielle with burning resentment, his eyes filled with the same fury as though he wanted to strike her all over again.

Meanwhile, Danielle simply smiled calmly. There wasn’t even the slightest hint of fear on her beautiful face.

Without sparing him another glance, she turned around and gracefully walked out of the office.

Asher thought the entire matter was finally over. However, just a few days later, Mason suddenly arrived at his office.

The moment Asher saw him, he couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow.

Mason looked utterly exhausted.

Dark circles surrounded his eyes, his uniform was slightly wrinkled, and his expression resembled that of a man who hadn’t slept properly in days.

Just as Asher was about to ask what had happened, Mason spoke first. “Sir… I’d like to request an advance on my army salary.”

Hearing those words, Asher leaned back in his chair.

“If it’s just one month’s advance salary, you don’t need to report directly to me. The finance department can handle something that simple.”

A look of embarrassment crossed Mason’s face. “It’s… not one month.”

He hesitated before finally forcing the words out. “I want ten years’ worth of salary in advance.”

For a moment, complete silence filled the office. Then Asher burst into laughter. “Ten years?”

He looked at Mason as if he had just heard the biggest joke imaginable. “Do you honestly believe you’ll still be serving in this army ten years from now?”

He folded his arms. “What if you die before then? What if you resign? What if you’re transferred somewhere else?”

Mason quickly straightened his posture. “I can sign a contract.”

Asher narrowed his eyes. After thinking about it for a while, he finally nodded. “Fine.”

He instructed someone to prepare a legally binding contract.

Naturally, Asher wasn’t foolish enough to let Mason take advantage of him.

The contract clearly stated that from that day onward, Mason was forbidden from making misogynistic remarks or insulting female soldiers and civilians.

Furthermore, he would be required to work twice as hard whenever necessary and would no longer be allowed to complain if assigned night duties.

After all, Mason was an incredibly slippery man. Previously, he had always found countless excuses to avoid difficult assignments.

Now, with this contract in place, Asher finally felt relieved. Still, something about the situation didn’t make sense.

‘Why would someone desperately want ten years’ worth of salary?’

Curiosity got the better of him. He ordered one of his trusted subordinates to investigate quietly. A day later, the investigation report landed on his desk.

Asher casually opened the file. The more he read, the harder it became to suppress his laughter. “So that’s what happened.”

He leaned back in his chair with an amused smile. It turned out Danielle wasn’t an easy person to deal with.

Instead of crying or begging for mercy, she had cornered Mason completely. She demanded three gold bars along with one million dollars.

Then she calmly delivered her ultimatum. “If you don’t pay me…”

Her smile had remained perfectly composed. “…I’ll report everything you’ve done to Commander Asher.”

She leaned slightly closer. “And when that happens, your military career will be over.”

Faced with that threat, Mason had no choice but to surrender. He promised to pay her.

However, he also requested two days to gather the money. Unfortunately for him, Danielle was far smarter than he expected.

She immediately saw through his empty promise.

Instead of believing his words, she refused to give any statement until every single coin had been delivered into her hands.

That decision nearly drove Mason mad with anger. Even so, he had no other choice.

Eventually, he requested the ten-year salary advance just to gather enough money.

After paying Danielle everything she demanded, he secretly hired a group of thugs.

His intention was simple. Recover the money, and eliminate Danielle. Unfortunately for him, Danielle had already anticipated that possibility.

The moment she received the payment, she immediately hired several highly trained bodyguards to remain by her side day and night.

Every one of Mason’s assassination attempts failed before they could even begin. After reading the entire report, Asher rested his chin on one hand.

Only a single thought crossed his mind. ‘That young lady is surprisingly resourceful.’

Afterward, he gradually forgot about Danielle altogether. Military affairs occupied nearly all of his time.

His schedule became so packed that he no longer had the leisure to think about unrelated matters.

That was, until another report unexpectedly reached his ears.

One of the women working in the logistics department had submitted a proposal.

Not only was it practical, but it also presented an effective solution for significantly increasing the soldiers’ overall efficiency during training and long-term operations.

The moment those words reached Asher’s ears, his interest was immediately piqued.

As fate would have it, the person behind the proposal was none other than Danielle.

For a brief moment, Asher couldn’t help but wonder if this woman had joined the army solely to chase after him. ‘It’s not that I’m being narcissistic…’

He folded his arms thoughtfully.

‘But she went from being a country bumpkin to suddenly joining the army and becoming an assistant in the logistics department. That couldn’t have happened overnight.’

She must have spent an incredible amount of time preparing. But why? There had to be a reason.

‘Maybe… she has taken a liking to me.’

The more Asher thought about it, the smugger he became. A faint smile even appeared on his lips.

Finally, unable to suppress his curiosity any longer, he decided to visit her workplace personally.

When he arrived, he noticed Danielle sitting beneath the shade of a large tree. Several soldiers surrounded her.

Rather than flirting or chatting idly, everyone was engaged in a serious discussion. Curious, Asher quietly sat on a bench not far away.

He remained silent, listening to their conversation. Before long, Danielle’s pleasant voice reached his ears.

“Sometimes, rather than focusing entirely on teamwork, it’s equally important to improve individual attacks.”

She calmly drew a few rough sketches in the dirt with a small stick.

“Certain individual techniques, when combined creatively, can become unbelievably powerful.”

The soldiers listened attentively.

“For example…” She looked around before smiling. “If you’re capable of creating a Water Ball, why not try infusing it with a Fire Ball?”
