Chapter 766: Vicious
Chapter 766: Chapter 766: Vicious
She cried even harder. “We’ve lived together for more than ten years. You should have developed some feelings for us by now, shouldn’t you?”
She looked around at the crowd pitifully. “Even a person becomes attached to a dog after raising it for so many years.”
Hearing those words, Danielle suddenly laughed. Her laughter echoed through the quiet street. “So…”
She tilted her head slightly. “Are you calling yourself a dog?”
The moment those words fell, Jonah’s face twisted with rage.
His fists clenched so tightly that the veins on the back of his hands bulged.
For a split second, he almost raised his hand.
He wanted nothing more than to slap Danielle across the face.
However, he forcefully suppressed those violent thoughts.
‘Not now, one day, when nobody is watching… I will make sure she pays for humiliating us.’
The next second, however, he abruptly knelt on the ground. His expression instantly transformed into one of grief.
“Please… Please have mercy on two helpless old people.”
As he cried, he knew exactly what he was doing. He was morally blackmailing Danielle. But so what?
As long as she agreed to take them back, everything would return to how it used to be.
Danielle quietly clenched her fists.
At that exact moment, Asher, who had been silently observing everything from within the crowd, frowned.
‘This has gone far enough.’
He slowly took a step forward.
‘If I don’t interfere now, she’ll definitely suffer.’
Just as he was about to step in… Danielle suddenly spoke.
“Alright.”
The single word stunned everyone. Asher’s heart immediately sank.
The surrounding crowd exchanged worried glances. Many people assumed she had finally broken under the pressure.
Some were already preparing to stop her.
Then, Danielle smiled. “Go ahead.”
She looked directly at Margaret and Jonah. “Kill yourselves.”
The entire street fell into complete silence. Nobody could believe what they had just heard.
Danielle crossed her arms calmly. “I know people like you.”
Her smile remained cold. “If you’re truly sincere, then I won’t stop you.”
She slowly continued.
“Even if I reject you today, one day you’ll still die. If I accept you and later fail to take proper care of you, you’ll blame me and say I caused your death.”
“If I take you in and I die first…” She looked at both of them expressionlessly. “…then you’ll die as well.”
She spread her hands. “Since every human being dies eventually, why not just do it today?”
Margaret and Jonah’s eyes widened in disbelief. They never imagined Danielle would answer them like this.
For a brief moment, both of them were completely speechless.
Looking back, Danielle had always been this straightforward.
The only difference was, before, she had endured everything because she still cared about them.
She had remained silent whenever they framed her.
She had tolerated every insult because she genuinely treated them as family.
But now, everything had changed.
Whether they lived or died, it made absolutely no difference to her.
The two old people quietly exchanged nervous glances. Meanwhile, Danielle looked at the clock hanging on the nearby wall.
“I’m giving both of you exactly three minutes.”
Her voice remained frighteningly calm.
“If neither of you dies within that time…”
She smiled. “…I’ll personally bring out a knife and chop off both of your heads.”
At first, Margaret and Jonah assumed Danielle was merely bluffing.
However, the moment they watched her turn around and walk straight into the house, they became uneasy.
Several moments later, she actually walked back out.
In her hand was a large kitchen knife. Margaret immediately began trembling. Her lips quivered uncontrollably.
“D-Don’t forget…”
Her voice shook violently. “You can’t kill people inside the base.”
Danielle smiled sweetly. “Oh?”
She slowly tilted the knife. “Really? But I won’t be killing anyone. You two committed suicide yourselves.”
She shrugged casually. “It has nothing to do with me.”
Hearing those words, Jonah hurriedly blurted out,
“Even committing suicide isn’t allowed inside the base!”
The moment those words escaped his mouth, the surrounding crowd fell silent. Everyone finally understood.
So, from the very beginning, these two old people had never intended to kill themselves.
They had merely been threatening Danielle because they already knew the base prohibited both murder and suicide.
How shameless. The crowd finally exploded. One middle-aged man shouted angrily,
“Throw these shameless old people out!”
Another person immediately agreed. “If this kind of behaviour succeeds today…”
He pointed at Margaret and Jonah. “…then tomorrow others will start morally blackmailing young women the exact same way!”
Someone else added,
“We absolutely can’t allow this kind of disgusting behaviour inside the base.”
The voices became louder and louder.
Soon, dozens of people were criticising the elderly couple simultaneously.
Margaret’s and Jonah’s faces turned pale. They nervously looked around. “N-No…”
Margaret desperately waved both hands. “You’re misunderstanding us! We…”
Unfortunately, nobody wanted to hear another word from them.
Eventually, security personnel arrived.
Both Margaret and Jonah were forcefully dragged away before being thrown out of the base.
After everyone finally dispersed, Danielle quietly stood where she was.
A thoughtful expression appeared on her face. ‘Something isn’t right.’
She narrowed her eyes. ‘Why would Mason’s parents suddenly appear here?’
The timing was simply too perfect. Someone had definitely been manipulating everything behind the scenes.
But who? More importantly, how had they even managed to sneak Margaret and Jonah inside the base?
Just as she was lost in thought, a familiar voice interrupted her. “Are you alright?”
Danielle turned around in surprise. “Sir? You’re here?”
Asher slowly nodded. His deep gaze remained fixed on her. After a brief pause, he asked,
“Do you want me to investigate this matter for you?”
Danielle gently shook her head. “I’ll handle it myself. Still, thank you, sir. You’re truly a gentleman.”
Those simple words struck Asher harder than he expected. His heartbeat instantly sped up.
Earlier, while watching Danielle confront Mason’s parents without backing down, he had already felt something strange happening inside his chest.
Now, after hearing her sincere praise, his heart felt as though it might burst.
He silently watched Danielle walk into her house.
Even after the door closed, his heartbeat refused to calm down. Slowly, he placed a hand over his chest.
His pulse pounded against his palm. He stared blankly ahead before quietly murmuring, “…Do I like her?”
Meanwhile, inside the house, Danielle leaned against the closed door.
The smile on her face gradually disappeared. She slowly placed a hand over her own chest. “What are you doing, Danielle?”
She let out a bitter laugh. “If you keep this up…”
Her expression became complicated. “…you’re going to fall in love all over again. And when that happens, you’ll only end up crying again.”
She closed her eyes.
“Don’t forget what Mason did to you. Don’t forget how he betrayed you.”
For a moment, the room remained completely silent. Then another voice seemed to echo deep inside her heart.
‘So what?’
She slowly opened her eyes.
‘He betrayed you because that was the kind of man he had always been. You already caught him cheating once before. You were the one who ignored every warning sign.’
Mason had been a habitual cheater all along. He had a long history of betraying every woman he had ever dated.
Danielle had known that from the very beginning. Even so, she had foolishly hoped that she would become the exception.
Unfortunately, there had never been an exception. Taking a slow breath, Danielle gently leaned against the door.
Now, another man had unknowingly entered her heart. Asher. She knew very well that Asher had hardly ever been in a relationship.
He was the complete opposite of Mason. He rarely attended parties. He wasn’t interested in chasing women. He devoted almost all of his time to his duties.
A man like him, someone handsome, capable, disciplined, and respected, was incredibly difficult to find.
For a brief moment, a faint smile appeared on Danielle’s lips. However, she suddenly raised both hands and lightly slapped her cheeks. “No.”
She shook her head firmly. “Don’t fall for him.”
She looked at herself in the mirror. Her reflection stared back at her with conflicted eyes. “He’s practically a prince.”
A bitter smile surfaced. “And I’m just an ordinary woman. We belong to completely different worlds.”
She took another deep breath before forcing herself to calm down.
Meanwhile, far away from the base, someone else was being rescued
Ironically, it was another zombie.
Talia had been leading a special government rescue team across the country.
Although the government had officially announced that nearly every zombie had been eliminated, isolated cases still appeared from time to time.
Her team’s primary mission was simple. Travel across every city, village, and abandoned area. Search for any surviving zombies.
The moment one was found, administer the antidote immediately.
Every antidote they carried had been carefully supplied by the government.
Naturally, Talia worked tirelessly. She wanted to save as many lives as possible.
Even after the official declaration that humanity had regained control, she had still managed to rescue fifty-six infected people during just the third month of her nationwide mission.
