Chapter 778: Apology
Chapter 778: Chapter 778: Apology
He fucked her with his fingers until she was writhing, until the sheets twisted in her grip, until she was so close she could feel the orgasm coiling at the base of her spine like something monstrous… and then he stopped.
She screamed in frustration.
Only then did he undo his belt. Only then did he position himself above her, the head of his cock pressing against where she was wettest, hottest, most desperate.
He pushed inside in one long stroke. Her back arched off the bed.
There was no more teasing. He fucked her hard, the kind of fucking that was more punishment than reward, each thrust driving her deeper into the mattress.
Her apologies became a litany, broken syllables spilling from her lips in time with his rhythm and through all of it, Silas remained silent.
Just the sound of their bodies meeting, the creak of the bed frame, and Ivy’s voice cracking on his name.
She came with a sob, her nails raking down his back, and he followed moments later, his jaw clenched tight against whatever sounds he wouldn’t let himself make.
In the aftermath, she reached for him. Silas pulled away.
She watched through half-lidded eyes as he rose from the bed, as he walked to the bathroom, as the shower started. The water ran for a long time.
When he returned, he didn’t meet her gaze. He pulled on a pair of sleep pants, crossed to the bedroom door, and paused with his hand on the frame.
“Get some rest,” he said quietly. “Tomorrow is another full day.”
The door clicked shut behind him.
……………………………
5 days later.
That night, after another lonely sleep, Ivy slowly opened her eyes.
Instinctively, she reached toward the empty space beside her.
The bedsheets there remained cold. Just like every night over the past week, Silas hadn’t slept beside her.
Closing her eyes, Ivy slowly curled into herself.
For the very first time, she truly realized how much pain Silas must have endured because of her decision.
She quietly bit her lower lip. ‘Why did I even think of sacrificing myself… I messed up badly.’
After all, Silas loved her more than anyone else. If he had become this cold, then she must have crossed a line she wasn’t supposed to cross.
‘It must have been triggering.’
Thinking that, Ivy immediately climbed out of bed. She hurried toward the living room. Sure enough, Silas was already there.
Since she was throwing up the day before, he put all the punishment thing on hold.
A tray rested on the table. Freshly cooked porridge still emitted thin wisps of steam, filling the room with the comforting aroma of warm rice.
Several military reports remained scattered before him. The moment Ivy saw him… she quickly walked over.
“Silas…”
She stopped directly in front of him. “Let’s talk.”
Silas continued reading the document in his hands. He didn’t answer, not even a glance.
Seeing that, Ivy’s eyes gradually became red. She clenched the hem of her shirt before quietly asking,
“…Will you only agree to talk to me after I cry?”
Hearing those words, Silas finally stopped reading.
He carefully placed the document onto the table before looking directly into her eyes. His expression remained serious.
However, the very first thing he asked wasn’t related to their argument.
“How many times have I told you to wear your slippers?”
After saying that, he turned toward the cabinet, intending to fetch them again.
This time, Ivy immediately grabbed his wrist. “I don’t want to wear those stupid slippers!”
Her voice rose uncontrollably. Silas looked back at her calmly. “…Why?”
That single question completely broke the restraint Ivy had been desperately maintaining.
She shouted, “Because you’re ignoring me!”
Her eyes instantly filled with tears. “You act like I don’t even exist! You don’t even treat me like your wife anymore!”
Her voice trembled violently. “If you don’t like me anymore, then just divorce me!”
The instant those words left her mouth, something inside Silas finally snapped.
Before Ivy could react, he suddenly pulled her tightly into his embrace. His arms wrapped firmly around her trembling body.
His heartbeat pounded loudly against her ear. For several moments, neither of them spoke. Then, in an unusually low voice, Silas asked,
“Is it really my fault that I’m ignoring you? Or is it yours? Weren’t you the one who forgot to discuss with me as a husband about an important matter, and now it had suddenly become my problem?”
Even while he was angry, his voice never became harsh. He deliberately lowered it. He was making every effort to ensure he didn’t vent his frustration on her.
That realization alone made Ivy’s heart ache even more. Silas tightened his embrace slightly.
“Ivy. Do you have any idea how I felt when I saw you floating in the air that day? My soul almost died. I truly believed I was about to lose you forever.”
His breathing became uneven.
“Do you understand how terrified I was?”
Hearing those words, Ivy bit her lower lip.
“But that was the best choice. I wanted to protect all of you.”
She gently gripped his shirt. “Didn’t you do exactly the same thing in our previous life? You sacrificed yourself to protect me. So…”
She lowered her head. “Why wasn’t I allowed to do the same for you?”
Those words caused Silas to freeze completely. He slowly looked down at her with disbelief filling his eyes.
Seeing his expression, Ivy continued, “Back then, I also believed that you shouldn’t have sacrificed yourself.”
She forced herself to meet his gaze.
“But you never thought about how I’d feel. So, why should I think differently now?”
The moment those words escaped her lips, Ivy’s entire body stiffened.
Her eyes widened in horror. ‘No, what did I just say?’
She knew that, at that time, Silas must have been desperate to save her.
Otherwise, he would never have sacrificed his own life for her.
Thinking back on what she had just said, guilt twisted painfully inside her chest. Her words had sounded unbelievably selfish.
However, Silas froze in place.
A realization struck him like a bolt of lightning.
He had believed that the two seconds he spent watching Ivy hover on the brink of death had been the most unbearable agony imaginable.
He had thought his suffering was unmatched because, in those two seconds, he had already wanted to follow her into death.
But compared to Ivy, his pain was nothing. She had endured an entire decade believing he was gone forever.
Ten years of surviving in a cruel world without the one person she loved the most.
Seeing the stunned look on his face, Ivy immediately panicked.
“I’m sorry… I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that.”
She hurriedly wrapped her arms around him, burying her face against his chest as if afraid he would disappear.
“I know… I was wrong.”
Silas remained silent. His silence terrified her even more.
“I promise,” Ivy continued hurriedly, her voice trembling with desperation.
“I will never sacrifice myself again. I swear it. From now on, I’ll always take care of myself first. My priority will always be saving my own life before anything else.”
A long sigh escaped Silas’s lips.
It carried every ounce of fear, exhaustion, and helplessness that had been suffocating him for days.
He slowly tightened his embrace around her, almost as though he wanted to merge her into his own body so she could never leave again.
“Ivy…” His voice was unusually hoarse. “I was genuinely scared.”
He closed his eyes, inhaling the familiar scent of her hair, reassuring himself that she was truly alive and warm in his arms.
“I don’t know how you survived… but without you…”
His voice cracked. “I think… I would’ve preferred to die.”
He let out a bitter laugh that sounded more painful than amusing.
“This world isn’t that wonderful, Ivy. It’s boring… empty… cruel… and far too evil to live in. Without you, I truly don’t think I would’ve survived. So don’t ever do something like that again.”
He swallowed hard before continuing.
“When I saw you hanging in the air, on the verge of dying, I almost killed myself. It was only two seconds, Ivy. You floated there for just two seconds… yet half of your lifespan was nearly taken away.”
His embrace unconsciously tightened.
“If Jade hadn’t taught me how to create a puppet that looked exactly like you… if he hadn’t taught me how to replenish your lifespan…”
His eyes turned slightly red.
“I would’ve lost you for a very… very long time. And maybe… maybe I would’ve never been able to meet you again. Ivy… you’re fortunate enough to have been given another chance at life.”
A self-deprecating smile appeared on his face.
“But I wasn’t a good person. So I won’t ever be given that chance. So please… don’t take away the only happiness I’ve ever had.”
He shook his head slowly.
