Chapter 799: Scarifice An Organ
Chapter 799: Chapter 799: Scarifice An Organ
Meanwhile, Asher walked deeper into the house.
Danielle, who was sulking in the living room, immediately heard his footsteps approaching. She knew exactly who it was, but she deliberately refused to look in his direction.
Just last night, after they had cleared up all their misunderstandings, they had finally confirmed their relationship. Danielle had even been kind enough to give Asher a spare key to her house.
Who would have thought that this bastard would turn around and say something so heartbreaking to her?
The memory still irritated her. Therefore, when Asher entered the living room, Danielle deliberately turned her face away.
Asher did not say much. He simply walked over and dropped himself onto the sofa beside her.
Although Danielle was still furious, she had already noticed that something about his expression was strange. The irritation in his eyes was mixed with confusion, and there was a faint tension in his shoulders.
She finally glanced at him. “What happened?”
Her expression remained irritated, but there was a trace of concern hidden beneath her annoyance. Asher chuckled. “You will not believe what just happened.”
Danielle frowned. “What?”
“I just saw your boyfriend outside.”
Danielle’s brows furrowed even deeper. “What do you mean?”
Asher leaned back against the sofa and looked at her with an amused expression.
“I saw your ex-boyfriend, Jackson. He was standing outside and acting all lovey-dovey.”
He paused deliberately before adding, “Tell me, is he really that handsome that you did not even bother informing your new boyfriend that you already had another boyfriend?”
Danielle stared at him in disbelief.
“What nonsense are you talking about? I have already told you that I have no relationship with Jackson.”
Her voice became sharper as she remembered the man standing outside.
“I would definitely have confronted him properly if you had not come inside.”
With that, she stood up. Asher immediately reached out and caught her hand. “There is no need.”
Danielle turned toward him. “I wanted to go and deal with him.”
Asher gently pulled her back toward him and wrapped his arms around her.
“You do not need to. I already dealt with him.”
Danielle struggled for a moment before eventually giving up and allowing herself to rest against his chest.
Asher held her tightly, the warmth of his body slowly easing some of the tension in her shoulders.
“How come you are always angry?”
He lowered his head slightly, his voice carrying a teasing warmth. “But I love it.”
Danielle’s heart immediately softened.
She hated how easily he could melt her anger with a few words.
Still, she refused to let him see how affected she was and maintained her stubborn expression.
“Well, maybe it is because I am not beautiful.”
Asher chuckled.
“But what can I do? I think my girlfriend is so beautiful that I want to give all of my attention to her.”
Danielle rolled her eyes.
Despite herself, the corners of her lips twitched upward. She looked at him and lightly pushed against his chest.
“Don’t you dare try to butter me up. I am not going to forgive you that easily.”
Asher sighed and leaned back against the sofa.
“I see. Then there is nothing I can do about that. However, I actually had a gift for you. I was thinking about giving it to you today, but now it seems that it will have to wait.”
Danielle looked at him with a confused expression. “What gift?”
Instead of answering immediately, Asher reached into his pocket and pulled out a small set of keys. The moment Danielle saw them, her eyes flickered with surprise.
“Wait a minute. Is that…?”
She leaned closer, staring at the keys as realisation slowly dawned on her. “Oh my God. Oh my God! Is that the key to a car?”
Asher chuckled before shaking his head. “No. This is the key to your current home.”
Danielle froze. “My current home is this two-bedroom apartment.”
Asher nodded. Danielle remained silent for a long while, staring at the keys in his hand. “Why are you going to give it to me?”
Asher’s lips curved into a playful smile. “I am not going to give it to you.”
Danielle frowned. “What?”
“I am the new landlord. Since I am your new landlord, I have decided to establish some different rules for this property.”
Danielle narrowed her eyes. “What kind of rules?”
Asher rested his chin against his hand and looked at her with an amused expression.
“Well, rather than collecting monetary rent, I would be more interested in collecting physical affection. Consider it a special kind of rent for every day you live here.”
Danielle stared at him in disbelief. “Isn’t that harassment?”
Asher laughed. “You would have to give me one kiss as your boyfriend and three kisses as your landlord every single day.”
Danielle’s eyebrows shot upward. “Did you not just say that you only wanted one kiss?”
Asher shrugged innocently. “Well, you are questioning my intentions, so I have no choice but to become more ruthless. I have to make money somehow.”
He gave her another mischievous smile. “Now you know what kind of landlord you are dealing with.”
Danielle rolled her eyes. “You know what? Just leave. I will move out tomorrow.”
Asher immediately shook his head. “No, you will not.”
Danielle stared at him. “Why not? What benefit will you even have by staying here?”
He lifted the keys and gently jingled them between his fingers. “Because this is our room.”
Danielle looked at him helplessly before sighing. Asher smiled, clearly pleased with himself.
“I bought it so that when I return, we can have our private moments and won’t have to worry about the landlord knocking on the door.”
“Return? Are you going somewhere?” Danielle became alert and asked with anxiety.
“You must have noticed that the building here is getting transformed, right?” Asher didn’t answer right away but asked another question.
Danielle thought about it and nodded.
The architecture around the area had changed dramatically over time. Buildings that had once been constructed primarily from bricks, iron, and cement had gradually transformed into towering structures of glass and steel.
They even have some kind of cooling technology. Even when she was bypassing it, the cold air around it made her tempted to go in.
Everything seemed more advanced and refined.
“I will have to foresee the construction and make sure nothing goes wrong,” Asher explained.
“These quick constructions… how does it happen? Is there any alien helping the base? Or some superhuman?” Danielle asked curiously.
Asher gave a wry smile; understanding that he couldn’t answer her, she changed the subject and asked.
“How much longer will it take before you return?”
Asher’s expression softened.
“I will give you an exact answer when I know. The process constantly requires time. Sometimes it can be completed within a day, but other times it may take two or three days. So do not worry too much.”
He paused before continuing. “If you want, you can just become my assistant, and then we won’t have to separate. We can be together all day…”
Danielle thought about it for a moment, then she smiled and shook her head. “No.”
“Why not?” Asher raised an eyebrow.
“Because I don’t want others to point at me and say, ‘Look, that’s Asher’s wife. I want them to call me Danielle.” She explained with sparkling eyes.
Asher’s expression softened a little before he teased, “But I won’t mind if someone calls me Danielle’s husband. I might even enjoy it!”
Danielle blushed before glaring at him.
Meanwhile, far away from them, Patrick was being held inside a police investigation room beneath an underground facility.
The room was cold, damp, and almost completely devoid of natural light. The walls smelt faintly of mildew and old concrete, while a single weak light above him flickered intermittently.
Patrick blinked against the harsh light. He had almost forgotten what daylight looked like.
Just as he closed his eyes, cold water was suddenly splashed across his face.
Patrick jerked violently and began shouting and cursing, but his words came out as little more than muffled, broken sounds.
Most of his teeth had already been broken, and his injured tongue made it almost impossible for him to speak properly.
Every movement caused another wave of pain to spread through his body. He could barely endure it anymore.
‘How long have I been awake?’
Patrick could no longer remember.
He thought he had not slept properly for nearly three days.
His eyelids felt impossibly heavy, yet every time he began drifting toward unconsciousness, something would happen to force him awake again.
He had even begun considering whether he should negotiate with Silas.
Silas had made his terms painfully clear.
He would allow Patrick to sleep if Patrick was willing to sacrifice one of his organs or body parts.
