Lydia gave Ivy a strange look, as though the question itself was rather odd.
“There is no such thing as a mayor. There is only a city lord. This town comes under Peng City.”
The moment Lydia mentioned the name, Bella paused in the middle of what she was doing.
She leaned toward Alana and whispered, “Who the heck names a city Peng? What happened? Did they have some kind of grudge against this city?”
Alana immediately elbowed her lightly in the side. “Stay focused, Bella.”
Bella pouted and rubbed her side. “You are always so serious.”
She then turned her attention back toward Lydia.
Lydia continued without noticing their exchange.
“The city lord has four henchmen. Those henchmen are the ones who patrol the town and the neighbouring villages. As long as we have the approval from them or get them to run an errand for us, we can attract the attention of Lord Peng.”
Lydia lowered her voice slightly, glancing around as though she was worried someone might overhear her.
“Lord Peng is famous for his love of beautiful women. You need to be very careful around him. He is extremely lustful, and because he has the backing of his brother-in-law, who happens to be another regional representative, he is incredibly arrogant. He might even come to your door and deliberately offend you just to see how far he can push you.”
Hearing those words, Ivy frowned.
“So, he tests the bottom limit of people, and if they do not meet his standards, he pushes them away or removes them from the town?”
Lydia nodded.
Ivy’s brows furrowed as she considered the situation.
“This is going to be different from our original plan. We initially planned to identify the important guests among the customers.”
As Ivy fell into thought, Lydia suddenly continued.
“If only you had opened this restaurant in the neighboring town called Sunrise Town. The representative there is very fair and unbiased. He would definitely give you a fair verdict. Not only that, he might even give you a chance to connect with important people because he is coming here for a visit within the next two days.”
Her eyes brightened as she continued speaking.
“I can also ask all of my siblings to spread the news about how good the food here is. You might get a huge influx of customers, and he would definitely be attracted by the restaurant and come here himself.”
Hearing that, Ivy smiled warmly.
“Thank you so much, Lydia. That is very kind of you.”
She then glanced toward Bella, who immediately understood what she wanted.
Bella nodded and soon returned with a large plastic bag containing four lunch boxes. She handed the bag to Lydia.
Lydia’s eyes widened when she saw what was inside, and she quickly waved her hands.
“How can I take this?”
Her hands were almost trembling as she looked at the food.
Four lunch boxes would cost nearly forty thousand credits at the restaurant. Forty thousand credits was equivalent to a single person’s monthly salary, yet Lydia was being given that much food for almost nothing.
Ivy gently pushed the bag toward her.
“Just consider it an employee benefit from now on. Take two lunch boxes. In the future, you can eat both of them or sell one if you need the money, but I would recommend that you eat the food yourself.”
Lydia stared at her, visibly touched.
Her eyes immediately turned red, and tears began gathering along her lower lashes. She quickly knelt in front of Ivy and started to bow her head repeatedly.
Before she could bow again, Ivy quickly stepped backward.
“There is no need to do something like that.”
Lydia shook her head, and tears finally streamed down her cheeks.
“You do not even know how much of a favor you have done for me by giving me this job and this food. This food is truly lifesaving for me. Thank you so much. Thank you so much.”
Her voice trembled with emotion as she finally took the lunch boxes and held them tightly against her chest.
Once Lydia had completely left the restaurant, Ivy turned toward Jade.
“Now tell me. What was it about Lydia that made you allow her to stay here?”
Jade smiled faintly.
“Well, hiring her was a good decision, wasn’t it? From my perspective, she is extremely fast and capable.”
Ivy gave him a faint, skeptical smile.
Before she could say anything else, Bella frowned and quickly stepped between them.
“Are you going to tell her or not?”
Jade sighed before finally giving in. “That girl has a very, very specific role in the future.”
Everyone’s attention immediately shifted toward him.
“In the future, she will become the city lord of Peng City.”
The words fell into the room like a stone dropped into still water.
Everyone stared at Jade in shock.
Jade calmly continued, “She is actually the switched daughter of the Peng family. She was switched at birth.”
The rigidity of the superior being’s world was such that only the royal family could inherit the position.
Even small roles like henchman or city lord required royal blood.
So if Lydia happens to have royal blood, she can indeed become the candidate for city lord.
Bella’s eyes widened.
“Wow, so switched-at-birth daughters really exist here as well. That is something new to hear.”
Everyone immediately glared at her.
Bella shrugged innocently. “What? I am just telling the truth. Is there a problem with saying it?”
She sighed dramatically. “You guys are truly too much.”
With that, she finally shut her mouth.
Everyone turned their attention back toward Jade.
He continued,
“Not only that, but if my prediction is correct, she is destined to have an extremely high blood compatibility of ninety-four per cent. Once that happens, she may even become a candidate for the royal throne.”
“That doesn’t make sense.” Alana suddenly said, “The fake daughter must be with all the connections; won’t she sabotage the pitiful Lydia?”
“Her and getting sabotaged? You are taking that girl too lightly.” Jade laughed.
Ivy nodded slowly, understanding finally dawning in her eyes.
“So, rather than making her an enemy, you wanted to make her an ally.”
Jade shrugged. “You can take it that way.”
Ivy paused for a moment before nodding.
“All right, I understand. Thank you for thinking ahead.”
She then turned toward the others.
“Since the decision has already been made, let’s go with Jade’s decision. I trust him. Does anyone else think his decision is wrong?”
No one said anything.
After a moment of silence, everyone simply returned to their respective positions.
The following day, when Lydia arrived at the restaurant, she looked unusually secretive. She quickly walked toward Ivy and lowered her voice.
“I have finally obtained information about the henchmen. They are staying nearby, and I have already spread the word about this restaurant. They will definitely arrive today, so keep an eye out for them.”
She glanced toward the entrance before continuing.
“They will definitely be wearing red clothes. These henchmen usually wear clothes in a very subtle shade of red, and they have an extremely overbearing presence. You will notice them as soon as they arrive.”
Then her shoulders sagged a little, and she said in a soft voice,
“As for that Sunrise Town’s representative, I tried to find him, but I couldn’t. I will continue to look for him.”
“No need to worry about him. You have done your best. Thank you for your efforts.” Ivy gave a gentle smile to her.
“Still… I wish I could be more useful.” Lydia said softly.
Hearing that, Ivy slowly knelt in front of the little girl.
This little girl was truly extraordinary.
Just from one glance, Ivy could already sense that Lydia was destined for greater things.
Even though she was not the real daughter of the Peng family yet, she had somehow managed to establish such a wide network of connections.
‘Once she discovers her true identity and becomes the real daughter of the Peng family, she will probably create even more miracles.’
With that thought, Ivy looked at Lydia seriously.
“Lydia, if you ever discover in the future that you were switched at birth, what would you feel?”
Lydia looked at Ivy calmly. There was no childish hesitation in her expression.
“Then I would pretend that I do not have a father or mother. I do not want to go and meet the fake daughter.”
