After returning to Minjiang City, Feng Bai made a conscious effort to avoid seeing his family—mainly because he was terrible at keeping secrets. If anyone in the family noticed something off, he’d definitely end up betraying Xiao Jiang Li’s trust.
His preoccupied and guilty demeanor didn’t escape Zhong Yue’s notice. After only a bit of probing, she quickly figured out what was on her boyfriend’s mind.
Zhong Yue burst out laughing. “Your little sister’s dating Tong Yi? What’s so strange about that? I actually thought it was weird you hadn’t noticed anything between them earlier!”
Feng Bai looked at her in surprise. “Why do you think so?”
Sure, he occasionally talked to his girlfriend about his family, but not that often. And since they hadn’t formally met each other’s families yet, Yueyue and Xiao Jiang Li had never even met. So why?
Zhong Yue playfully raised her eyebrows. “You guess?”
Feng Bai thought hard for a while, then finally shook his head. “No idea. I always thought Jiang Li saw Tong Yi as just a friend. And there was a time he really tried to act like her big brother. I even thought he just saw her as a little sister.”
Though he always jokingly called Tong Yi his “big nephew,” he never actually took that seriously.
What he never expected was that Tong Yi—that pig trotter of a bastard—had been secretly courting their family’s little cabbage all along… and had actually gotten it.
Zhong Yue chuckled. “Remember that time you took your sister to the mall to help pick out a gift for me? The moment you posted it to your Moments, Tong Yi just happened to show up there too. You didn’t think that was a little too coincidental?”
Feng Bai thought back to that day and suddenly looked shocked. “You realized it then?”
Zhong Yue thought for a second and replied, “Not exactly. I was only guessing at the time. But now it looks like my instincts were spot on.”
Feng Bai muttered, “And you didn’t say anything to warn me.”
Zhong Yue looked innocent. “I did hint at it. You’re the one who misunderstood. You even said Tong Yi was there to get your sister’s help picking out a gift for his sister.”
Feng Bai: “…”
He hadn’t realized at all what kind of wolf was lurking! A vague hint clearly wasn’t enough; he needed someone to spell it out.
Seeing how annoyed he looked, Zhong Yue couldn’t help saying, “Even if you’d figured it out earlier, what could you have done? If your sister really likes him, are you going to stop her?”
Feng Bai sighed. “That’s not the issue. The real problem is, if Third Uncle finds out and thinks I knew but kept it from him, he’ll definitely come after me first.”
Zhong Yue tilted her head. “Is your third uncle really that scary?”
Feng Bai nodded without hesitation. “Absolutely. I’ve been scared of him since I was a kid. He didn’t even discipline me that much, but I still always felt nervous around him.”
Zhong Yue offered advice. “Then just play dumb. As long as your sister doesn’t sell you out, he’ll never know you knew anything.”
Feng Bai agreed with a nod. “That’s what I was thinking. I’m just gonna avoid going home for a while. The less I show up, the less likely it is I’ll slip.”
As long as he got through this phase and Xiao Jiang Li confessed everything to Third Uncle herself, he’d be safe!
…
Old Master Feng had noticed that his third grandson hadn’t been home for quite a while, and he was feeling a little down.
When Feng Qi finally came home for a rare visit and Feng Bai still didn’t show up, Old Master Feng couldn’t help getting snide. “You’re setting such a great example as an elder, huh? Now all the kids follow your lead and never want to come home!”
Feng Qi didn’t know what this was about, so he raised an eyebrow and asked, “Hasn’t Xiao Lizi been keeping in touch with you?”
Old Master Feng rolled his eyes. “She calls me all the time. Unlike some people, who probably forgot they even have a home.”
Feng Qi looked puzzled. “Then who are you mad at?”
Old Master Feng glared at him again. “Haven’t you noticed someone hasn’t been home lately? Oh right, I forgot—you never come home yourself, so of course you wouldn’t notice.”
Feng Qi: “…”
They say people become more like children as they age. He used to dismiss that idea, but now he was starting to believe it.
Seeing Feng Qi stay silent, Old Master Feng sighed. “I guess Xiao Bai’s got himself a girlfriend, and now he doesn’t like coming home anymore. But even when he dated before, he wasn’t like this.”
Feng Qi paused for a few seconds, then said, “I’ll give him a call and ask him to come back.”
Old Master Feng immediately waved his hand. “Whether he comes home or not is his business. Don’t call him—it’ll seem like this house can’t function without him.”
Feng Qi didn’t argue, but after dinner, once he was back in his room, he still called Feng Bai and told him to come home when he had time to visit his grandpa.
When Feng Bai picked up the call, his tone sounded a little off, but Feng Qi didn’t think much of it. He figured his nephew was just feeling guilty for not coming home for so long.
What Feng Qi didn’t know was that when Feng Bai first saw the call from him, he thought his secret had already been exposed! It wasn’t until Feng Qi stated the actual reason for the call that he finally relaxed.
As soon as he hung up, Feng Bai immediately called Tong Yi. “You’d better come out to Third Uncle and Grandpa ASAP, or I’m not covering for you anymore.”
Tong Yi replied without hesitation, “Jiang Li and I already discussed it. We’ll be going back to Minjiang for the Qingming Festival to visit the family graves. That’s when we plan to talk to the family.”
Feng Bai did a quick mental calculation and realized the Qingming holiday was just around the corner. “Fine, do what you want. Just don’t drag me into it. As far as I’m concerned, I know nothing.”
After hanging up, Feng Bai immediately went out and bought a huge pile of gifts, then headed home to appease his lonely grandpa. He explained that he hadn’t been coming home because work had been so hectic.
Seeing how sincere his expression was—and that he didn’t seem to be forced home by Feng Qi—the old man’s mood quickly improved.
Hmm, looks like Xiao Bai really has been busy with work. The kid’s only been out of school for a couple of years—it makes sense that he’d be ambitious. I shouldn’t overthink it.
“All right, all right, go handle your work. I don’t have time to babysit you,” Old Master Feng said, waving him off.
Feng Bai: “…”
Perfect. Less chance he’d accidentally let something slip and bring disaster on himself.
…
Feng Qi had been particularly busy lately. Assistant Kong hadn’t been able to report in for several days, but since the company had plenty of competent people, there wasn’t much that needed the big boss’s personal attention anyway.
Once he’d wrapped up work matters, Assistant Kong found himself a bit bored and decided to open the school forum of Capital Medical University.
When Miss Jiang Li had first enrolled, Third Master Feng was concerned she might have a hard time adjusting to life alone in a new city. So he’d instructed him to keep an eye on her. Following the boss’s orders, he checked the school forum nearly every day, tracking her updates in real time.
As time passed and it became clear that his beloved niece had adapted well to her new environment, Third Master Feng stopped requesting updates, but Assistant Kong, out of habit, would still occasionally browse the forum.
Just like always, when he saw the trending post titled [Goddess Jiang Confirmed Dating], he just rolled his eyes, thinking it was yet another false shipping drama.
Miss Jiang Li isn’t the type to fall in love easily, no way!
Still, Assistant Kong clicked on the post, ready to indulge in a little gossip.
But the moment he saw the photo of Jiang Li and Tong Yi holding hands, he almost dropped his phone.
For several seconds, he just stared in stunned silence before murmuring to himself, “Photoshopped. It has to be photoshopped. There’ll be an explanation later.”
It had happened before: someone had once posted a fake photo of Miss Jiang Li hugging a giant panda with the caption “National Treasure hugs National Treasure.” He’d almost believed it until he scrolled further and saw it had been edited.
With that in mind, he calmed himself and slowly started scrolling through the thread.
But when he saw another photo—this time of Jiang Li, Feng Bai, and Tong Yi all together—his hand slipped, and the phone clattered to the floor.
Assistant Kong: “…”
Miss Jiang Li is really dating Tong Yi?
And Young Master Feng Bai knew about it?
The post had been published several days ago. If Young Master Feng Bai was in the photo, then surely he’d already told the family about it, right?
Which would mean Third Master Feng should already know…
But Assistant Kong was certain that his boss still had no clue.
To the Third Master, the lab was his wife, and Miss Jiang Li was like his daughter.
Right now, the “daughter” was about to “elope” while the “wife” stayed put. When it came to priorities, Third Master Feng would definitely handle the daughter first.
So… Young Master Feng Bai knows, and chose not to say anything?
If that was true, this was about to get… very interesting, to say the least.
Once Third Master Feng came out of the lab and learned about it, he definitely wouldn’t have the heart to scold Miss Jiang Li too harshly.
As for Tong Yi… well, since he was the apple of Miss Jiang Li’s eye, any punishment would probably come with limits.
But Young Master Feng Bai?
Oof, he’d better pray for himself!
