Feng Bai believed his request for time off was completely reasonable and legal, but his uncle still rejected it!

He tried to reason with Feng Yuan. “Uncle, I think working overtime long-term is unhealthy. It’s not good for sustainable development at all. Just think, if something happened to my health, wouldn’t that be a huge loss? Grandpa would definitely come after you for it. Don’t you think so?”

Feng Yuan didn’t take the threat seriously at all. He smiled and replied, “You’re perfectly healthy. How could something go wrong with your body? Your third uncle is much older and still works overtime every day, and he’s doing just fine. So stop making excuses. Young people should work hard.”

Feng Bai’s eyes widened. “This is overwork!”

Feng Yuan maintained a warm smile. “I already did the math for you. You’re still well within a healthy workload. You’re far from being overworked.”

Feng Bai sighed helplessly. “I haven’t gone shopping with Yueyue in three days. This can’t go on. I refuse to do more overtime.”

“Just hang in there a little longer. Things will calm down soon,” Feng Yuan tried to persuade him.

Feng Bai: “…”

Fine. He’d hang in there a few more days.

“There’s a three-day break for Qingming Festival—I have to take at least one day off. I’ll definitely go home the day Xiao Jiang Li goes back too!” Feng Bai made his request.

Xiao Jiang Li was going home this time to confess to her family about dating Tong Yi. Third Uncle would likely be furious and definitely give Tong Yi a hard time. He wanted to be there to watch that guy’s bad luck and unwind a bit from all the overtime stress!

“I’m afraid that won’t work,” Feng Yuan replied gently, though his words were ruthlessly firm.

“Why not?” Feng Bai looked incredulous.

Feng Yuan sighed. “This was A’Qi’s arrangement. He told me to give you more work lately, and he specifically said to make sure you’re working overtime the day Xiao Jiang Li goes home.”

The moment he heard it was Feng Qi’s idea, all of Feng Bai’s confidence vanished. He looked puzzled. “Why is Third Uncle targeting me like this?”

Feng Yuan answered honestly. “I asked him about it, but he didn’t say exactly why. He just said that even if you had free time, you wouldn’t be doing anything worthwhile with it.”

Feng Bai: “…”

How does having free time automatically mean he’s not doing anything worthwhile?

Dating and playing video games are totally legitimate activities, alright!

Feng Yuan was also curious what exactly this kid had done to piss off Feng Qi so badly. “What did you do lately to make your third uncle this mad?”

Feng Bai was full of question marks. “I don’t know! I swear I didn’t do anything, I—”

Mid-sentence, Feng Bai suddenly looked stunned. After a long pause, he muttered, “Don’t tell me… It’s because he found out I didn’t do anything that he’s targeting me?”

Feng Yuan raised an eyebrow. “What are you talking about?”

Feng Bai slumped back in his chair like all the bones in his body had melted, mumbling, “It has to be because Third Uncle found out I didn’t do anything. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be acting like this.”

Feng Yuan: “…”

This kid’s acting weird. Could he be losing it from all the overtime?

He reached out and patted Feng Bai’s shoulder. “Maybe you should take a couple of days off after all. I’ll talk to your third uncle for you.”

Feng Bai shot out of his chair. “No need! I’ll just stay here and work overtime for the next few days. I’ll even sleep at the office! We can talk about rest later.”

Seeing the speechless expression on his uncle’s face, Feng Bai explained, “Third Uncle’s definitely still angry. It’s safer for me to stay at the company.”

He absolutely couldn’t go home right now. If Third Uncle saw him, he might get even angrier and perhaps would send him straight to a military base.

That wouldn’t have been a big deal in the past, but now that he had a girlfriend? If he went AWOL for military training, Yueyue would definitely get upset.

Feng Yuan frowned. “What on earth did you do that scared you so badly you don’t even dare go home?”

Feng Bai looked guilty. “Xiao Jiang Li and Tong Yi are dating, and I didn’t tell Third Uncle. Now he knows, and also knows we kept it from him. He’s definitely furious.”

Feng Yuan was silent for a full thirty seconds before finally patting his silly nephew’s shoulder. “As much as I’d like to help… you’re on your own with this one.”

After Feng Yuan left the office, Feng Bai sat there in a daze for a while before finally pulling out his phone and calling Jiang Li.

The moment the call connected, he started ranting. “Third Uncle found out I knew about you and Tong Yi but didn’t tell him. He’s drowning me in work—I’ve been doing overtime every single day. Xiao Jiang Li, you’ve seriously gotten me into trouble!”

When the call came in, Jiang Li was in her dorm packing her bag. Hearing the complaints, she looked surprised. “Did you tell someone about me and Tong Yi?”

Feng Bai immediately denied it. “Why would I do something that dumb? I’ve barely even been home lately. The only person I mentioned it to was Yueyue, and she’d never say anything.”

Jiang Li thought for a few seconds, then looked surprised. “Could it be that Uncle saw the post on our school’s forum?”

“What forum?” Feng Bai was confused.

Jiang Li lowered her voice to explain, “Someone took a picture of me and Tong Yi holding hands and posted it on the school forum. You happened to visit me that same day, and someone also snapped a photo of you. If Uncle saw the post, then… he’d know everything.”

Feng Bai let out a long, helpless sigh. “Why didn’t you tell me about that forum post sooner?”

If he had known earlier that the post would blow their cover, he would’ve found a way to get it deleted. Even if he couldn’t delete the whole thread, he’d at least scrub out anything related to him.

All this stress over one forum post… Just thinking about it was depressing.

Jiang Li explained in a low voice, “I really didn’t expect that Uncle would read our school’s forum. If I had known, I definitely would’ve warned you, Third Brother.”

But then she remembered how Feng Qi had secretly come to Beijing to confront Tong Yi, even using Tong Yi’s phone to send her childish questions… and suddenly it didn’t seem all that strange for him to be browsing the school forum when he was bored.

Jiang Li knew Feng Bai must be feeling frustrated now, so she tried to comfort him. “Don’t be mad, okay? I’m going home tomorrow. I’ll make some snacks for you myself as an apology. You can pick whatever flavor you want.”

Feng Bai sighed helplessly. “I’m afraid I won’t be able to eat the snacks you make.”

“Why not?” Jiang Li asked, puzzled.

Feng Bai replied expressionlessly, “Thanks to Third Uncle, I have to work overtime all three days of Qingming Festival. Isn’t that exciting?”

Jiang Li: “…”

That really was… a bit too exciting.

“Then… how about I go talk to Uncle and ask him to stop giving you such a hard time?” Jiang Li offered.

If she acted cute and pleaded with him, her uncle would probably soften up.

But Feng Bai responded immediately, “Better not. He’s already been tormenting me for days. He might calm down soon. But if you go and remind him all of a sudden, I might be in for even worse.”

Jiang Li thought that made sense, so she said softly, “Then I’ll come visit you at the office after I get home. I’ll bring you something tasty.”

Feng Bai couldn’t help laughing. “Well, at least you still have a little conscience. Third Brother didn’t spoil you for nothing.”

After hanging up, Jiang Li stared at the bag on her chair in a daze. She suddenly realized her uncle might be even angrier than she’d thought, since he was already “dragging innocent people down with him.”

But Tong Yi said her uncle seemed very calm, and even said he wasn’t opposed to their relationship.

Was he just… blindly confident?

A few days back, Feng Qi had secretly come to Beijing to confront Tong Yi and had even told him not to let Jiang Li know. But Tong Yi was hopeless at keeping things from Jiang Li. She’d sensed something was off, pressed him a little, and he spilled everything.

At the time, Jiang Li had only thought her uncle was being adorably awkward—his behavior had that sort of unexpected charm.

After some hesitation, she decided to pretend she didn’t know her uncle had come to Beijing, and just wait to talk everything out once she got home for the break.

But now… she wasn’t so sure anymore.

After finishing packing, Jiang Li slung her bag over her shoulder and headed to her villa. She had just stepped inside and bent down to take off her shoes when Tong Yi arrived right behind her.

Since they’d started dating, Tong Yi had asked for the door code, then casually added his fingerprint to the lock system and started treating the place like his second home. Thankfully, he still had the decency not to sleep over and always left before nightfall.

When he walked in, he saw her bending over and immediately slipped an arm around her waist. “Now I finally get what they mean by ‘a waist that fits perfectly in your hand.'”

Jiang Li glared up at him. “You’d better not mess with me today.”

Tong Yi put on a lazy, totally nonchalant expression. “Who’s got the nerve to mess with our Jiang Xiao Li? Just say the word—I’ll deal with them for you.”
