Chapter 659 The Grand Farce, The Middle Act

Chapter 659 The Grand Farce, The Middle Act

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Resistance¹ members charged into the royal capital, fanning out as they ran. Everywhere they looked in the town, they were met with the gruesome scars of the monsters’ rampage.

The once-prosperous town or streets were shattered in places, and the presence of bloodstains suggested that the townspeople had attempted a desperate resistance. Glass was pulverized, buildings were webbed with cracks, and some structures were missing their doors entirely.

This devastation was not limited to public buildings; the homes where the citizens lived had suffered the same fate. The streaks of blood, likely from victims dragged out from their rooms, felt viscerally raw to anyone who saw them.

Given the state of affairs, the townspeople residing in the capital could not possibly have emerged unscathed. It mattered little whether they were the devout believers of the ruling class or the captured citizens of other nations treated like common slaves.

”This is just hellish, isn’t it?” one man said.

A group that had just finished off a swarm of monsters stepped into a house to find women who had been subjected to violent violation. To the monsters, social standing meant nothing; if they were female, they were merely breeding bags. However, perhaps because only a few days had passed since the occupation began, no one was yet visibly pregnant.

”…Ugh.”

”Even if they’re the enemy we hate, as a fellow man, I can’t help but feel for ’em…” another replied.

Elsewhere, a group that had defeated a pack of female-type monsters discovered men who had been toyed with. The female monsters they had just slain were, to put it bluntly, not anything one could feel desire for.

It appeared the men had been injected with drugs for breeding purposes; they lay there naked and imprisoned, with their organs locked in a state of full arousal. Some had faces beaten to a pulp while others suffered from physical dismemberment; just imagining the torture they endured was enough to send a chill down one’s spine.

”Regardless, wiping out the monsters comes first. Rescue and protection will have to be sidelined for now,” the leader said.

”I’ll at least give them a shout,” another member said. “Listen up! We’re setting up a protection zone at the nearby chapel! We won’t be back until every last monster is dead! If you can walk on your own, head there now! There are warriors there to protect you, so it’s safer than staying here! That’s all!”

With that, they departed, taking with them kidnap victims who were dressed in visibly wretched clothing. Those left behind were almost exclusively the townspeople native to the capital.

The abandoned survivors began to move sluggishly, in total silence. Driven by a singular, desperate instinct to survive, no one found the strength to speak.

Having endured such horrific experiences or witnessed such macabre scenes, the spirits of the townspeople were utterly shattered. There was no pride left to be wounded by the thought of being saved by ‘heretics.’ Even a bishop, who once looked down upon heretics and preached of their forced submission, now moved wordlessly to evacuate.

(God will not save us. Even though the capital was drowned in screams, nothing changed. What use is a God? What was the point of all those offerings we dedicated…)

* * *

As emptiness swallowed their hearts, magic² and magic clashed violently above their heads, illuminating the town with brilliant, multi-colored flashes of light.

On one side was the female demon who had ravaged the royal capital. On the other was a man with demon-like traits who stood against her. The people realized that it was only because this terrifying demon and the man flying through the sky were evenly matched that they had been spared from the monsters’ clutches.

Even those who weren’t bishops—anyone living in the capital—could grasp that much. It was because the female demon had decimated the capital’s remaining forces that the monsters had been able to run rampant.

To the people of the capital, the female demon who had instantly slaughtered the Apostle of God³ was the very embodiment of despair. Consequently, the man fighting her on equal terms was the literal definition of hope.

In a nation where the act of faith was more deeply ingrained than anywhere else, the people naturally began to offer up prayers. They prayed that power would be granted to the man doing battle with the demoness.

Unaware that such scenes were unfolding across the city, Shinji was consumed by the struggle to counter the magic unleashed by his fostermother, Lechary.

”Ho-ho-ho! Is that the best you can do?!” Lechary asked with a laugh.

Lechary simultaneously deployed a staggering number of spells that were easy to execute and control: Dark Sphere, darkness compressed into a globe; Dark Blade, formed into a razor edge; and Dark Arrow, shaped for maximum penetration.

Using a deluge of magic that would normally require a small army of casters—with every single shot carrying enough mana to be lethal—all on her own proved just how far beyond standard limits she truly was. Her precision was equally flawless; not every shot was aimed directly at Shinji, as some were intentionally fired to cut off his escape routes.

”Not yet… I’m just getting started…!” Shinji muttered, after a pause.

’As expected of Mama. Her mana reserves are through the roof,’ Freri added in his mind.

In response, Shinji retaliated against Lechary’s magic while performing evasive maneuvers through the air.

Thanks to their fusion, Freri was able to take direct control of Shinji’s mana, allowing Shinji to focus entirely on boosting his power via the Furnace of Lust. With the combined capacity of two souls, further bolstered by the self-buffs from the Divine Staff Aria, his body could finally withstand the strain of running the Furnace of Lust at full throttle while using Spirit Armament.

Because of this, Shinji burned through mana aggressively, ignoring his remaining reserves as he cast his spells. Utilizing the water and earth elements governed by the flower spirit, alongside the darkness governed by the succubus, he unleashed the exact same types of magic as Lechary.

He neutralized her Dark Spheres with Water Spheres¹⁰, intercepted Dark Blades with Earth Walls¹¹, and picked off Dark Arrows with his own. It was only because Freri held the reins of mana control that he could manage such a frantic, continuous barrage and finally hold his own against his fostermother.

The sight of countless spells clashing in the sky above the capital had transformed the heavens into a magical war zone where no one else could hope to intervene. However, behind the scenes of this fierce struggle…

’Kyah~! That’s my boy! So, so? What happened next?! Tell me all about how you claimed that young lady after your big reunion!’

Through thought transmission, the chat between the fostermother and adopted son moved right along. While the fostermother, Lechary, was privately gushing over her son’s exploits, her magical barrage never faltered for an instant. The same could be said for Shinji as he recounted his tale, though he wasn’t quite as composed as she was.

She had the leeway to talk because she was sticking to simple spells. If Lechary were to start mixing in more sophisticated magic, Shinji would immediately lose the luxury of focusing on anything else.

(She’s a monster through and through. To think we’re barely managing this with two of us… Just because her elemental affinity is bad doesn’t mean she’s an easy catch. What kind of monster is the Demon King if this is his subordinate?)

He couldn’t shake the feeling that a true victory would require a massive risk—staking his very life. On the flip side, it meant his power had finally matured to a point where the summit was within sight, and Shinji felt the weight of his own growth. That being said, he had no intention of taking pointless risks, so he stuck to the scripted farce they had agreed upon, silently neutralizing magic while he pondered and occasionally glanced at the ground below.

The skirmishes breaking out all over showed no sign of ending just yet. However, the combat near the royal castle had reached its conclusion; the gates stood open, and he could see Luluane and her team storming the interior.

(I hope they smash that altar by the time we finish our talk. If we run out of things to chat about, this magic battle is going to get way more intense… And I’d really rather not exhaust myself completely here…)

It was easy to predict that once the conversation ended, her full attention would shift back to the combat. If she began employing high-tier magic, the difficulty of neutralizing her attacks would skyrocket.

’I’ve finally secured a permanent spot in the vault. It’s made things so much smoother. Thanks to that, the preparations for the jump to the other world are coming along nicely—’

Praying for a resolution even a second sooner, Shinji sent his thoughts back to his fostermother, Lechary, and kept up the grand farce.

Summary:

Resistance forces liberate citizens from horrific conditions in the occupied capital while the broken townspeople find hope in Shinji’s battle. Above the city, Shinji and Lechary engage in a massive magical exchange that is secretly a cover for a private conversation. Shinji uses his fusion with Freri and his new equipment to match his fostermother’s overwhelming power. As the ground forces breach the castle, Shinji hopes the mission ends before their ‘scripted’ fight escalates.

Character Insight:

Shinji shows significant growth, realizing he can now stand on equal footing with the ‘out-of-spec’ Lechary, though he remains pragmatic enough to prefer a ‘farce’ over a life-threatening duel. Lechary, despite her role as a terrifying demon, displays an affectionate, almost gossipy motherly side through thought transmission, showing a jarring contrast between her public persona and her private feelings for Shinji.

Behind the Scene:

The contrast between the grim reality on the ground and the lighthearted conversation in the air highlights the ‘grand farce’ (茶番劇) nature of the conflict, where the high-level actors are playing a different game than the common folk.
