Chapter 1276: Awakeners In The Land Of Origin [5]
A comfortable warmth suddenly spread through Bok’s body. Feeling nothing like this before in his life, he almost let out a moan. Fortunately, he didn’t.
Bok almost dropped the knife.
The exhaustion that had slowly accumulated from hours of work disappeared within seconds.
Bok stood there in disbelief before he remembered the strange panel.
"Status?"
The instant the thought formed, the familiar blue screen appeared before him.
[Name: Bok]
[Race: Human]
[Level: 2]
[Experience: 0/250]
[Class: Hunter]
[Strength: 2.9{0.5^}]
[Agility: 4.2{1.0^}]
[Constitution: 2.2{0.5^}]
[Intelligence: 3.3{0.5^}]
[Attribute Points: 4]
[Skills]
[Basic Dagger Arts{Basic Mastery}, Basic Shot {Basic Mastery}]
Bok stared at the changes on his panel but had absolutely no idea what they truly meant.
Was a Strength of three strong? Was an Agility of four fast? How much difference was there between one point and two? And what exactly did Intelligence measure? Would this finally make him better at math?
He couldn’t answer any of those questions.
However, Bok did not need numbers to understand. He had become stronger.
His body told him that much.
Bok’s heartbeat accelerated.
Could this really be happening to him?
Growing up, he had heard countless ridiculous stories from travelling bards.
Stories about some poor farmer finding a Holy Sword buried beneath his field and becoming a legendary knight.
Stories about useless youths discovering ancient rings containing the spirits of legendary grandpas who taught them secret techniques.
Stories about people mocked their entire lives, only to awaken some miraculous power long after everyone had given up on them.
Bok had always enjoyed those stories.
He had simply never imagined he might become part of one.
Perhaps this was his opportunity.
His own strange miracle.
Bok wanted desperately to leave the workshop and test everything. He wanted to run, jump, lift something heavy.
Unfortunately, one glance toward Garr killed that idea at once. So Bok lowered his head and returned his attention to the next pig.
There was still too much he did not understand. But there was one mechanic he understood clearly enough.
Killing gave him Experience Points. Experience Points made the number beside his Level increase. And increasing his Level had just made him stronger.
For now, that was enough.
The rest of the day passed quickly.
Bok continued slaughtering pigs whenever Garr called him forward, carefully watching the experience notifications appear one after another.
Unfortunately, he did not manage to level up again.
Still, by the time Garr finally dismissed everyone, Bok had made good progress toward the next level.
That alone left him satisfied.
Instead of returning home right away, Bok headed toward a secluded patch of land outside the village. It was a place he occasionally visited when he wanted to be alone, surrounded by scattered trees, tall grass, and several large stones.
The moment he was certain no one was nearby, Bok stopped holding himself back and ran madly.
His eyes widened at once.
"So fast!"
Bok had known something was different from the moment he woke up that morning. Controlling his body had never felt difficult, but there had been a constant feeling that his limbs were lighter and stronger than before.
Now that he was actually testing himself, the difference became obvious.
His feet struck the ground rapidly.
The distance between two trees disappeared much faster than he expected, forcing Bok to stumble when he tried to stop.
He nearly crashed into a trunk.
Bok stared back at the distance he had covered.
He ran again. Then jumped.
His body rose much higher than he expected.
When he landed, Bok tried lifting one of the stones nearby right away.
It was something he would normally have struggled to move.
Now, although it was still heavy, he managed to raise one side from the ground.
Bok’s breathing became faster. The numbers on that panel were real. Each increase was actually changing his body.
Curiosity eventually overcame caution.
"Status."
The blue panel appeared.
Bok’s attention drifted toward the four Attribute Points.
He had no idea what they were supposed to do.
For a few seconds, he simply stared at the numbers on the panel, then absentmindedly focused on Agility while wondering what would happen if that number became higher.
A soft chime sounded.
[Agility increased by 1.]
[Attribute Points: 3]
"Huh?"
Bok blinked in confusion when suddenly warmth spread through his legs.
Compared to leveling up, it was more obvious.
He moved, and his figure shot forward.
Bok almost screamed in excitement.
He was faster. Noticeably faster.
One Attribute Point had done that. Just one.
Bok stopped beneath a tree, panting more from excitement than exhaustion. His eyes remained fixed on the panel.
Three points remained. Suddenly, they looked incredibly precious.
He dismissed the panel at once.
"No."
He wasn’t touching them again. Not until he understood more.
If one point could create such an obvious improvement, wasting the remaining three because of impatience would be stupid.
Bok’s mind began racing.
Why had this happened to him?
Many possibilities came to him, but none could answer him. Though he had no answers, his fear from earlier had almost completely disappeared.
Bok grinned foolishly.
Even the pretty widow he had been thinking about suddenly felt less important.
If this continued, why should he worry about one woman?
Perhaps the bards had been right. Heroes always became rich. And when that happened, heroes always seemed to have beautiful women appearing around them from every direction.
Bok nodded seriously to himself.
His future was clearly bright.
After spending a little longer testing his body, he finally realized how late it was becoming.
He hurried toward home.
The sky had already begun darkening by the time his small house came into view.
Bok pushed open the door and froze suddenly, only after walking a few steps in.
His smile disappeared.
On his bed, something was lying. Someone.
Bok’s eyes slowly widened.
The person had his face. Even the worn clothes were familiar.
Bok stopped breathing for several seconds.
"What in heaven’s name is this?"
Lying unconscious on the straw bed was his body.
