Chapter 1277: The Incident
Chapter 1277: The Incident
More than three days passed after that.
In the end, Bok had not been able to resist the temptation brought by his strange new power.
At first, he remained cautious and continued working at Garr’s butcher shop during the day, killing livestock whenever the opportunity came and quietly accumulating Experience Points.
That lasted less than a day.
Once Bok realized how slowly ordinary animals advanced his progress compared to what he needed, his attention shifted toward the forest.
He had grown up hearing warnings about the creatures deeper inside.
Goblins.
Wild beasts.
Occasionally something worse.
Before, even approaching those areas alone would have been foolish.
Now things were different.
Bok entered carefully the first time. Then again. And again.
The first goblin he killed gave him far more experience than a pig ever had.
After that, restraint became increasingly difficult.
His life, which had once consisted almost entirely of work, sleep, hunger, and worrying about money, suddenly became exciting.
Every trip into the forest carried danger, but every victory made him stronger. His level increased, his attributes rose, and his body grew faster and stronger with each passing day.
The Basic Dagger Arts skill that had appeared on his panel also became increasingly useful as he fought real enemies instead of helpless livestock.
At first, Bok had barely noticed the difference. He already knew how to handle a knife from years of working as a butcher, so many of the movements felt familiar. However, after several fights against goblins, he began realizing that the skill was subtly correcting him.
His grip became firmer. His thrusts grew cleaner. He wasted less movement when dodging or changing direction. Even the way he judged distance improved.
What had once been nothing more than experience from cutting meat was slowly being turned into something meant for combat. Bok could still tell that he was far from skilled, but compared to only a few days ago, the difference was obvious.
There was only one major problem.
His original body.
Bok eventually discovered that the body he was currently using could not remain active at the same time as his old one. Whenever he returned to his original body, this strange new body would fall unconscious.
Whenever he inhabited this body, his original one would become completely unresponsive.
He had no idea why.
He only understood that he now possessed two bodies and could somehow move his consciousness between them.
The discovery terrified him, but after the initial panic, Bok simply adapted.
He hid his original body inside his house.
Since he lived alone, it was not particularly difficult.
At night, he would sometimes switch back to confirm that the body was still alive before returning to the stronger one.
As the days passed, Bok’s ambitions began growing.
Being a butcher suddenly felt too small.
He had spent years imagining that this was simply what the rest of his life would look like.
Now he possessed something miraculous.
If he could continue killing monsters and growing stronger, then becoming an adventurer no longer sounded impossible.
He had already begun planning to resign from Garr’s shop once he became strong enough.
Unfortunately, everything collapsed yesterday evening.
Bok had returned unusually late after spending far longer than intended hunting goblins.
By the time he approached the village, the sky was already dark.
That was when he noticed the crowd.
A large group of villagers had gathered near his home, forming a tight circle around something on the ground.
Curiosity pulled him closer at once.
Bok forced his way through the crowd.
Then his entire body went cold.
Lying in the middle of everyone was his original body.
The situation had started because of Garr.
Bok had failed to appear at work.
At first, his master had assumed he was merely late.
When several hours passed without any sign of him, Garr became concerned.
Bok was an orphan. He had no parents and no one living with him who could check whether something had happened.
Eventually, Garr went to his house.
After knocking repeatedly and receiving no response, he forced the door open.
Inside, he found Bok lying motionless on the bed, alive and breathing, but completely unresponsive.
Naturally, the discovery attracted attention.
By the time Bok returned in his new body, nearly half the village seemed to know something had happened.
He realized all of this too late.
The moment he pushed his way through the crowd and saw himself lying there, several people noticed him.
Panic spread at once.
To them, the situation was simple.
Bok’s body was lying unconscious on the ground.
Yet another person wearing Bok’s face had suddenly appeared from the darkness.
His new appearance did not help.
Some believed he was a monster. Others thought some forest spirit had copied Bok’s appearance.
A few were convinced the real Bok had been cursed and replaced.
Bok tried to explain, but nobody believed him.
Worse, they refused to let him approach his original body.
Several villagers armed themselves with farming tools while others surrounded him.
Bok could have forced his way through.
After several days of leveling, ordinary villagers were no longer much of a threat to him.
But that would only prove their fears correct.
So he stopped resisting.
The village chief eventually made a decision.
If Bok truly claimed to be human and insisted that both bodies belonged to him, then the matter was beyond anything their village could judge.
They would report it to the nearest town.
Bok agreed.
That decision started a chain of events he could never have predicted.
Town officials arrived.
Then someone with knowledge of supernatural matters became involved.
Both Bok and his unconscious body were examined.
The matter was escalated again.
People far above anyone Bok had ever met became interested.
One authority passed him to another.
Then another.
And somehow, less than a day after believing his greatest problem was hiding his second body from Garr, Bok found himself being escorted through the largest city he had ever seen.
Then through the gates of an imperial palace.
And eventually, into the presence of the Emperor himself.
