Chapter 1393: 1392 Rejected

Chapter 1393: 1392 Rejected

“How could it be? You’re not that kind of person.”

Zhang Siming’s gaze flickered, and an unnatural hint crept into his smile.

When he heard Bai Yiyi mention her address just now, the first thought that came to his mind was that Bai Yiyi must be with Gu Kai.

Because a few days ago, photos of her and Gu Kai in an intimate moment were exposed online, and he knew Mo Xiuchen’s house was in that upscale villa district.

It was perfectly normal for Gu Kai to own a villa near Mo Xiuchen’s house.

“That villa belongs to Gu Kai.” Bai Yiyi glanced at Zhang Siming’s unnatural smile, her tone calm and candid.

The smile on Zhang Siming’s face froze again upon hearing her words. “Yiyi.”

He instinctively called out.

There was disbelief in his voice.

And a trace of sorrow.

Bai Yiyi said lightly, “If I were renting someone else’s villa, I wouldn’t be able to afford it. Gu Kai is Tongtong’s father, and he has a duty to support Tongtong, so he rented the villa to me at a low price.”

“Yiyi, that post from the other day circulating online, do you know who spread that rumor?”

“You saw it too?” Bai Yiyi asked back, not surprised that Zhang Siming had seen the post, nor was she embarrassed because he had seen it.

Zhang Siming nodded and said somewhat angrily, “Whoever spread that rumor is utterly despicable. You and Gu Kai merely share a child, Tongtong, yet they went as far as to photoshop those pictures and paint you as the third party who ruined Fang Zhiwei and Gu Kai’s relationship.”

He turned his head to glance at Bai Yiyi, paused for a moment, and then added, “Yiyi, I think the person spreading those rumors might be an admirer of Gu Kai. With Gu Kai’s family background, there must be plenty of people who like him…”

“It’s already been found out.”

Bai Yiyi hadn’t meant to mention anything related to Gu Kai.

But one topic after another kept revolving around Gu Kai. Looking at Zhang Siming’s indignant expression, Bai Yiyi felt compelled to clear things up for him to ease her guilt.

“You found out who it was?”

Zhang Siming looked at Bai Yiyi with curiosity.

“It’s a Kangning Hospital intern.”

“An intern? Could it be that Wei Jingshan, the one who confessed to Gu Kai in front of reporters that time?”

Bai Yiyi’s eyes flickered. She suddenly realized Zhang Siming’s way of addressing Gu Kai had changed from before.

She remembered during their first blind date, Zhang Siming had referred to Gu Kai as ‘Young Master Gu.’ But now, he was calling him Gu Kai.

“You seem quite invested in Kangning Hospital matters.” Bai Yiyi chuckled.

Zhang Siming awkwardly tugged at the corners of his mouth. “The Drug Administration’s workload is relatively light, and I usually overhear office gossip, which is how I know.”

“Oh.”

Bai Yiyi responded indifferently with a simple “oh” and fell silent.

Zhang Siming, seeing her quiet, assumed his earlier gossip had upset her. He pursed his lips, his expression turning awkward, unsure of what to say.

For a moment, silence filled the car.

Bai Yiyi gazed out the car window, her thoughts drifting far away, entirely indifferent to Zhang Siming, who was driving beside her.

As the car approached the villa district and stopped in front of the villa Bai Yiyi had mentioned, they coincidentally encountered Gu Kai returning with Tongtong.

Qing Feng was driving for him; Gu Kai held Tongtong in his arms as he sat in the back. As the car door opened and he stepped out, Gu Kai’s gaze fell upon the approaching SUV. His long, narrow eyes squinted slightly.

“Yiyi.”

Zhang Siming was visibly startled to see Gu Kai as well.

He couldn’t control his sudden whirl of thoughts. When he called out to Bai Yiyi, his voice carried an undertone of unease.

Bai Yiyi, lost in her own thoughts, heard Zhang Siming’s peculiar tone. She turned her head and glanced ahead through the windshield, catching sight of Gu Kai standing at the villa entrance, holding Tongtong in his arms.

Her gaze changed subtly as she met Zhang Siming’s puzzled eyes. Bai Yiyi thanked him matter-of-factly:

“Thank you for giving me a ride.”

A few meters away, Gu Kai stood tall and upright in the snowy ground.

With one arm holding Tongtong, his deep gaze fixed on Zhang Siming’s car. Through the glass, his eyes locked onto Bai Yiyi sitting in the passenger seat.

Despite the late hour, the car’s headlights were exceptionally bright.

Illuminating everyone inside and outside the vehicle with startling clarity. Bai Yiyi could even sense the simmering anger in Gu Kai’s gaze. Instinctively, she clenched her fists.

This damned coincidence—it was truly infuriating.

Especially when Zhang Siming and Gu Kai were in the same place. The atmosphere always felt strange to her.

“Yiyi, wait a moment.”

Bai Yiyi had just reached out for the car door when Zhang Siming suddenly—almost nervously—grabbed her wrist.

Instantly, Bai Yiyi felt a sharp, icy gaze pierce through the window. From the periphery, she could see Gu Kai’s face darken, his eyes cold, with a trace of mockery amidst the icy sharpness.

Strangely, she could see this so clearly—though on second thought, perhaps she wasn’t seeing it at all, but rather sensing it.

Frowning, she pulled her hand free from Zhang Siming’s grasp. “What is it?”

Seeing her seemingly annoyed, Zhang Siming nervously swallowed, his gaze fixed on her as he summoned his courage to speak: “Yiyi, I know you and Gu Kai have nothing between you. Even if everyone else refuses to believe you, I do.”

“Thank you.”

“Yiyi, what I said before, about liking you… It’s still true. And the more time passes, the deeper my feelings for you grow. You might not believe it, but I’ve never felt this way about anyone before. Lately, I’ve even been dreaming about you.”

“Zhang Siming…”

“Please, let me finish.”

Zhang Siming was clearly risking everything. He couldn’t ignore Gu Kai’s piercing gaze outside. He was gambling, wagering that Bai Yiyi and Gu Kai were truly uninvolved.

He didn’t fully understand what Li En had said to Gu Kai before her death, but he had heard vague rumors. And a few days ago, Bai Yiyi’s mother had returned to G City to surrender herself…

Don’t ask Zhang Siming how he knew all these details; he paid attention to everything concerning Bai Yiyi.

Including Gu Kai.

Gu Kai, standing outside, held Tongtong without approaching. It was as if there truly was nothing between them.

“Yiyi, I know I don’t have Gu Kai’s family background or his talents, but I genuinely like you. If you were to be with me, I swear I’d spend my entire life treating you well.”

In front of the villa, Gu Kai’s deep, shadowed gaze narrowed slightly. Suddenly, he stepped forward, carrying Tongtong to the front door. He entered the passcode and vanished inside the villa.

Just as Bai Yiyi was worrying whether Gu Kai would come forward to confront them, he disappeared from her view with Tongtong in his arms.

She should have felt relieved, yet her heart inexplicably sank.

It was as if a taut string in her chest had suddenly pulled tight. A pain she couldn’t fully explain spread throughout her.

Frowning, she interrupted Zhang Siming, speaking firmly and clearly: “Thank you for liking me, but I cannot accept your feelings. And thank you for bringing me home. I’ll get out of the car now.”

“…”

Zhang Siming’s eyes were filled with disappointment and sadness, left behind by Bai Yiyi’s rejection.
