Chapter 1455: 1454 No matter how you ask, it doesn’t matter

Kangning Hospital

When Bai Yiyi’s call came, Gu Kai had just gotten out of the car.

Not far away, Lu Zhiyan and Fang Zhiwei were walking together towards the hospital entrance. A hint of surprise flashed in Gu Kai’s eyes as his phone’s ringtone caught Fang Zhiwei’s attention.

Gu Kai looked at the incoming call, squinted his eyes slightly, smiled, turned off the sound, and put the phone back in his pocket.

Lu Zhiyan and Fang Zhiwei stopped at the hospital entrance, and Gu Kai walked over with large strides. His gaze swept over the flowers in Fang Zhiwei’s hand as he greeted them with a smile, “Zhiyan, Zhiwei, are you here to visit a patient?”

“Yes, Zhiwei heard that my cousin is hospitalized and wanted to visit her.”

Lu Zhiyan’s way of addressing Fang Zhiwei had, at some point, dropped the surname, calling her by her first name.

Fang Zhiwei also smiled slightly at Gu Kai, warmly saying, “Lu Zhiyan’s cousin is ill, and she has still helped me a lot these past few days. I couldn’t let myself not visit.”

“How’s Grandma Li’s health?”

The three of them walked into the hospital together, and Gu Kai casually asked.

Fang Zhiwei nodded lightly. As they took the elevator upstairs, Lu Zhiyan and Fang Zhiwei headed to the ward, while Gu Kai returned to his office.

Ten minutes later, Gu Kai finished his ward rounds, and Lu Zhiyan came out of the ward with him, leaving Fang Zhiwei inside to talk with her cousin.

“Ah Kai, when can my cousin have her surgery?”

“Next week.”

Gu Kai turned his head to glance at him, with his hands in the pockets of his white coat. He didn’t think Lu Zhiyan came out to discuss his cousin’s condition with him.

Sure enough, Lu Zhiyan’s next sentence shifted the topic, “I’ll be accompanying Fang Zhiwei for treatment later; I’ve already contacted the psychologist.”

“Is she willing to undergo treatment now?”

A flicker of mild surprise flashed in Gu Kai’s eyes, but he quickly returned to calm.

“Yes, it was Grandma Li who persuaded Fang Zhiwei. Her parents are not around, and her grandmother is the closest person to her. Fang Zhiwei listens to her words to some extent.”

“Zhiyan, Zhiwei is actually a very good girl. You’ve worked hard. I still have rounds to complete; let’s talk later.”

Gu Kai patted Lu Zhiyan on the shoulder and left with large strides.

Lu Zhiyan raised his hand to touch his nose, frowning in confusion, wondering what Gu Kai’s meaningful smile meant.

***

When Wen Ran arrived at the Bai Family, it was already nine o’clock.

She had called Mother Bai in advance, so Mother Bai was waiting for her at home.

“Aunt Qiao, Happy New Year. Sorry I wasn’t home for the Spring Festival; I’m here to give you New Year’s greetings now…”

Mother Bai warmly pulled Wen Ran to sit on the sofa and asked after a glance, “Ranran, where are Ziyi, Momo, and Xinxin? Didn’t any of them come?”

Wen Ran shook her head with a smile, “No, they are too noisy to bring along, so I didn’t bring them.”

“How could that be? I love those three kids. Ranran, next time you must bring them so I can see them; it’s been so long since I’ve seen them.”

Since Bai Xiaoxiao went abroad, only Mother Bai and Mr. Bai were left at home, with Mr. Bai busy with the company and social engagements. Therefore, most of the time, Mother Bai was alone at home.

“Okay.”

Wen Ran agreed with a smile.

“Ranran, did Xiaoxiao contact you during the Spring Festival?”

Mother Bai had the maid bring the freshest fruits and invited Wen Ran to eat.

Wen Ran shook her head, “Aunt Qiao, I’m not hungry. Xiaoxiao contacted me a few days ago and asked me to check on you and Uncle Bai.”

“That ungrateful girl; ever since she went abroad, she hasn’t thought of home.”

Mother Bai jokingly scolded, but her tone was full of gentle maternal love. After a pause, she continued, “Before the Spring Festival, Meng Ke visited our home and said he was going abroad to see Xiaoxiao. Ranran, did Xiaoxiao mention this to you?”

Wen Ran’s eyes flickered, and under Mother Bai’s curious gaze, she smiled and replied, “Xiaoxiao mentioned it to me, saying she managed to sign the contract thanks to Meng Ke’s help.”

“Haha, yes, Meng Ke knows several languages. Not only did he act as a free translator for Xiaoxiao, but he also helped her secure the greatest benefits.”

When Mother Bai talked about Meng Ke, she had the typical attitude of a mother-in-law speaking about her son-in-law.

“Aunt Qiao, it seems you know a lot more than I do.”

Wen Ran teased Mother Bai.

Mother Bai’s eyes were bright with laughter, “I don’t know much; I only know that Meng Ke helped Xiaoxiao and spent the Spring Festival abroad with her.”

“Ranran, did Xiaoxiao tell you how things are progressing between her and Meng Ke?”

Wen Ran couldn’t help but laugh, “Aunt Qiao, you’re gossiping about Xiaoxiao and Meng Ke. Why don’t you ask Xiaoxiao or Meng Ke directly?”

Mother Bai smiled and said, “I’m Xiaoxiao’s mother; how could I ask Meng Ke about their progress, as if I’m eager for him to take Xiaoxiao away.”

“Pfft, Aunt Qiao, you can always ask Xiaoxiao; there’s nothing wrong with that.”

“Ranran, you know that Xiaoxiao won’t tell me anything, right? Are you deliberately bullying me?” Mother Bai feigned anger, pursing her lips and frowning.

Wen Ran chuckled softly, “How could that be? Xiaoxiao might keep things from everyone else, but she’d never hide anything from you. She said during the last call that she heard you weren’t feeling well or something and insisted that I come to see you. Look how filial Xiaoxiao is to you.”

“She is filial,” Mother Bai said, eyes growing even more tender, her smile warm with affection.

“I had a bit of stomach pain a few days ago, but I didn’t tell Xiaoxiao for fear she’d worry. I didn’t expect that girl to be so sensitive and call you. What else did she say?”

Wen Ran thought for a moment, “Nothing really. Xiaoxiao just asked me to check on you. She also mentioned that Meng Ke spent the Spring Festival with her.”

“Ranran, Xiaoxiao hasn’t been in contact with Luo Haofeng, has she?”

Mother Bai hesitated for two seconds before asking.

Wen Ran lowered her eyes and smiled, “Aunt Qiao, Luo Haofeng is in the country, and Xiaoxiao is abroad. They definitely haven’t been in contact.”

“That’s good. Xiaoxiao is a stubborn girl. But since she could let go of her attachment to Xiao Yuting after more than ten years, she can surely move on from Luo Haofeng, who was just a brief relationship.”

Mother Bai let out a sigh of relief, as if trying to reassure herself.

Wen Ran pursed her lips, recalling Xiaoxiao’s sorrowful words on the phone, and felt an inexplicable pang in her heart.

She leaned in, using the pretext of picking up fruit to conceal her emotions, “Aunt Qiao, Xiaoxiao knows what she’s doing, so don’t worry about her. The fact that she spent the Spring Festival with Meng Ke shows that they get along well.”

“Hmm, hopefully.” Mother Bai sighed softly, “Xiaoxiao staying abroad and not returning makes me feel she hasn’t let go of Luo Haofeng. But with a girl being abroad, Uncle Bai and I are always worried. If she can accept Meng Ke, maybe she’ll come back sooner.”

No one knows their daughter better than a mother. Mother Bai, as Xiaoxiao’s mother, understands her thoughts to some extent.

Wen Ran offered a comforting smile, “Aunt Qiao, Xiaoxiao is staying abroad for business, not because of Luo Haofeng.”
