Chapter 404: Facing the Main Force: The Lin Sister’s Betrayal [Final]
The Lin sisters declaration was like a thunderclap as those from the eastern camp froze, feeling as if a cold bucket of water had been poured over their bodies.
The hero ranks whom they had believed to be their divine reinforcement had openly turned against them.
On the other hand, the Broken Dawn side burst into fits of laughter at the sudden development. Just moments ago, they had felt as if it would be their last day on earth. After all, even with all of them combined, including Samantha who was one of the core members of the group, there was virtually no way they could have survived the wrath of not one but two hero ranks.
The high ranking official’s face twisted as he watched the bullets fail again and again. His jaw clenched so hard it looked like it might crack, veins standing out clearly on his temples as fury and panic mixed together in his eyes.
This was bad. No, this was catastrophic.
If word reached Lord Henry or Dominic that the Lin sisters had defected, the responsibility would fall entirely on him. Failure. Incompetence. Betrayal. Any one of those charges would lead to a fate worse than death.
He took a shaky breath, forcing himself to speak again, his voice raised and sharp.
"Miss Lin Xueyi, Miss Lin Xiyumi," he shouted, trying one last time. "Are you sure of what you are saying? If Lord Henry or Dominic hears about this, you will be hunted down and executed without mercy. There will be no place for you in this world."
"Yes," Lin Xueyi replied in a firm voice. "We made our decision long ago to cut all ties with a camp that treats women as nothing more than toys."
"Very well then." The high ranking official nodded slowly. He knew there was no way his small squad could defeat the Lin sisters. If it were only up to him, he would submit. But what would happen after the war, after the eastern camp wiped out the enemies? He would suffer a fate far worse than death.
With a resolute look in his eyes, he adjusted his glasses and spoke in a grim voice. "Very well. That is your choice. Then you leave us no option."
He raised his arm and swung it downward.
"Fire at will. Kill the Lin sisters."
The eastern camp soldiers hesitated, slowly raising their weapons and pointing them at the two beautiful women, their skin like jade and expressions as cold as carved ice.
For a brief moment, no one moved. Fingers trembled on the triggers as their minds struggled to accept the order they had just been given. These were hero ranks. Their morals shattered even before the fight began.
"Fire!" the high ranking official roared again, his voice filled with desperation.
"Do it now!"
The hesitation vanished and gunfire erupted.
A deafening roar filled the battlefield as dozens of rifles spat out bullets. Compressed mana rounds tore through the air like a raging storm, streaking toward the Lin sisters in an overwhelming barrage.
The soldiers did not hold back. They fired as if facing a monster, unloading everything they had in a desperate attempt to erase the two figures from existence.
Broken Dawn fighters instinctively raised their arms or ducked, some shouting in alarm as they realized the firing line also covered their position.
However, unfortunately for the eastern camp, the Lin sisters had already foreseen this.
Lin Xueyi took a single step forward. At the same time, Lin Xiyumi raised her hand.
Their movements were calm and perfectly synchronized, as if rehearsed countless times before.
"Spirit barrier," Lin Xueyi said softly.
The air trembled. A deep, low, heavy hum spread outward from the sisters, like the sound of a giant bell being struck. In the next instant, translucent energy burst forth from their bodies, expanding rapidly in all directions.
In a matter of seconds, a slightly golden barrier had formed. It enveloped not only the Lin sisters but also the Broken Dawn fighters behind them.
Bang. Bang. Bang.
When the rain of bullets struck, hundreds of impacts rang out at once, sharp and metallic. Bullets flattened, shattered, or were violently deflected upon contact with the barrier, dropping uselessly to the ground. Some ricocheted away, while others fell straight down as if their strength had been drained in an instant.
The high ranking official’s face twisted as he watched the bullets fail again and again. His jaw clenched so hard it looked like it might crack.
"Do not stop firing. Even hero ranks can be killed!"
Those piercing words were not meant only to motivate his troops. They were also his way of convincing himself. Although it was very wishful, perhaps there could be a miracle and they would somehow manage to kill the hero ranks.
Bang. Bang. Bang. Bang. Bang. Bang.
The gunfire storm did not end. The soldiers fired nonstop for nearly two minutes until all their ammunition was exhausted. Smoke drifted through the air, the stench of burnt gunpowder hanging thick over the battlefield.
Shell casings littered the ground, steaming slightly as they settled. Every soldier from the eastern camp stared ahead with wide eyes and pale faces, their weapons now lowered uselessly. The golden barrier still stood, flawless and unbroken, its surface rippling faintly like calm water disturbed by a gentle breeze.
The Lin sisters stood calmly within it. Behind them, the Broken Dawn fighters slowly straightened from their defensive stances, looking at the two women as if they were divine beings.
"So this is a hero rank. Insane," Samantha muttered, her eyes locked onto their backs as she let out a long breath she did not realize she had been holding.
Meanwhile, on the opposite side, panic spread through the eastern camp like a disease. Some soldiers took a step back without realizing it. Others stared at their empty magazines in disbelief, their hands trembling. A few even dropped their rifles entirely.
Lin Xiyumi lowered her hand slowly. The golden barrier shimmered once, then faded away as if it had never existed. The air returned to normal, leaving behind only broken bullets scattered across the ground as proof of what had happened.
"This ends now," Lin Xueyi said calmly. "Lay down your weapons and retreat. We have no interest in slaughtering those who were merely following orders."
The high ranking official staggered back half a step, his face drained of all color. Sweat poured down his temples, his glasses slipping slightly as his breathing became uneven. He opened his mouth as if to shout another order, but no sound came out.
Retreat?
If he retreated now, his fate was sealed.
If he continued, there was no chance of victory.
While all of this was happening, on another part of the battlefield atop a rooftop, a man hurriedly approached Henry and IceQueen with an urgent expression on his face.
